Well went to docs today to sort out my vaccinations as we are going to kenya and i had to have quite few which thankfully weren't chargeable but i had a yellow fever injection which cost £55!! And i will need malaria tablets which will cost upto £55 depending on which ones i decide on. It was definatley something i hadn't planned on paying out for. Obviously i would rather pay than get really ill but just to make aware that some injections aren't free!!

saying that, I have to have B12 injections every three months and I have to go and get the stuff to be injected and pay for it myself :( x
I was very shocked when she said but if its that much i have to pay for my health i will! Didn't have all the money with me so she said i can owe it. Its not something i intially thought about when i first booked our honeymoon and i know some of the girls might not think about it like i did xx

I can see why people should pay for travel vaccinations, the NHS is really struggling financially and these vaccinations are pricey. Travelling on honeymoon is a luxury, not a necessity and if we want to go lovely places with bugs and nasties then we shouldnt really expect the NHS to fork out for our vaccinations. If the NHS is having trouble funding expensive cancer treatments etc then we really shouldnt begrudge paying for our holiday jabs. Just my thoughts. (Supposed I'm a bit biased as I work for the NHS and I see it struggling!) x

Yikes I'm glad we chose Italy. Can't believe the price of them injections. I agree Jane that if you choose to go on holiday then it should be down to you to pay for them not the NHS. I'm just glad we don't need them.
Just out of interest though anyone that is going to the EU can get a free health card which entitles them to the same treatments as a local. It doesn't always make it free but it does mean you won't be charged stupid prices although you are best to get travel insurance as well as they don't cover for getting you home etc.

Here here Becky! Couldnt agree more! I see lots of patients from all over the world who are over here 'visiting' friends and family and they come to us and get their treatment free. It sucks.

hmmm ... had a look online, nothing is required, Hep A is recommended for HK & China, and Typhoid for China ... don't know what to do ... when I went to Dominican Rep I asked the nurse and she said that as the reccomendations were the same as HK I wouldn't need anything.

£55 isn't too bad really; my friend had to get jabs when she travelled to Thailand inc a rabies shot which totalled in excess of £200. Re the malaria meds, please get the most expensive ones; they have far fewer side effects. The cheaper ones are notorious for side effects inc sensitivity to the sun and flaking/peeling skin, as well as nausea and diarrhea, and you have to take them for about 6 weeks in total; the more expensive ones are much less notorious for side effects, and you only take them for about 3 weeks.
We weren't offered the more expensive ones and I ended up having all the skin of my back peel off, as well as the skin on my legs, and I had to wear high-factor sun cream and stick to the shade as I burnt really easily (I can usually wear SPF 6 tanning oil and be fine); it basically made 2 holidays quite miserable. I also started to develop nausea and diarrhea about 2 weeks in which lasted for 4 weeks until I stopped taking them. I really really wish we'd been offered the more expensive ones as everyone I know who's taken them has been fine.

in regards to the malaria tablets there is one of them you cant take if you have ever had any form of depression....
