Hi Ladies, just thought I'd start a wee thread about undies etc.
I work in a lingerie department and most of my time is spent fitting women for bras, I had one lady the other day (monday) who was getting married on friday needing underwear. She was cutting it quite fine but fair enough. Then on friday before she went to get her hair done for her wedding she came in to get a different bra as she had changed her dress!! Crazy woman. Hope she isn't on here! :p
Anyway, if anyone needs help with underwear solutions I will do my best to help.

Does it need to be strapless? What size? If it does need to be solution underwear rather than pretty stuff most of it only comes in white, black, neutral or cream (bridal).

I don't think it's too early, x0x-Zoeee - you need your underwear for when you have your dress fittings!
Peaseblossom - wish you were about when I was looking for mine a couple of months back! In the end I had a lovely lady in a dept store help me, but I was in a realy tizwaz!

Another thing I forgot to mention is:
Ladies, if in doubt go and get measured. I have never in three years of working with bras measured anyone as an A cup, they just don't exist. The only people who are A's in my opinion are young girls (eg. I measured a little girl the other day who was a bit tubs and was a 36A). If you have small bosoms it doesn't necessarily mean you are a small cup. Back size is a huge factor. xx

Can you help me? I need a strapless bra but one thats more like a wonderbra/balconette my bra size is 32a (thats why I need a decent bra lol) My dress is a 2 piece corset top with straps that fall off the shoulders. I've tried a lot of strapless bras including the wonderbra ultimate but they all just squash me in!

I'm not sure what to do on underwear and was going to start a thread to ask, but no need to now!

I'm thinking of not bothering with a bra at all, as if my dress is boned I don't see why I need one and would be less hassle without, but I'm not sure whether this is wise or not. I also would like some sexy underwear for the wedding night, but of course it then wouldn't be revealed as I take my dress off if I'm only planning to wear knickers under my dress.... so I'm not sure! What are other people planning to do?

Re. Basques- There aren't too many fuller bust basques out there. Debenhams (where I work) are meant to be getting in a new bridal range up to a G cup but I am yet to see it. Try Bravissimo too.
Another thing is if your dress is a proper tight laced corset you will not need a bra (for my graduation ball I wore a corset with no bra and I am a 36H-HH and my boobs weren't going anywhere). Often there is no room for a bra!

Lollilou, if they are squishing you you could be in the wrong size. See my comments re A cups above.
Claire, if you don't feel you need it don't wear it. I would change into something sexier once out your dress. Personally I wouldn't want to seduce my new husband in undies I had been wearing all day!

Leah, I've found that Bravissimo tend to be good at fitting rather than measuring. They have great guides on how a bra should fit, rather than how to measure. Where had you been before and do you know approximately what size you are?

Claire, I'm probably a bad person to answer that as I'm wearing a custom-made corset as a part of my wedding outfit (I'm having a corset under a boned bodice for maximum shape) and then hoping to have some really fab silk knickers like those from Ell and Cee, plus a suspender belt and nude/red contrast seam stockings. To be honest, I wouldn't try to get changed into a bra when you get back to your room as you're likely to be knackered. Why not get some seriously sexy lingerie for the honeymoon instead or just have amazing knickers?

ah I hadn't thought of that, my dress is a lace up back with an inner corset so am i not likely to need a bra? dress lady said I'd need a really good strapless bra...I'm confused! Also if i do need a bra, where do I find a good strapless bra that pushes them up rather than feeling like its going to fall down? I cant find one anywhere!!!

Specialsundae... I quite like your idea actually! And you're probably right, I'm not going to want to put a bra on after a long tiring day wearing a heavy dress! But seriously sexy knickers with the promise of sexy underwear for the honeymoon could work very well!

Personally I hate strapless bras, and the dress I want is strapless, so I will avoid having to wear a bra at all costs! I just find them really uncomfortable so the thought of wearing one all day and night isn't very appealing.

sarahuttley- Wonderbra Ultimate Strapless goes up to an F cup and has a thick band. As for the pants, you can get some pretty sexy shaping undies now, try M&S and Debenhams. If your dress is quite tight you won't need much holding in!

Just a quick point on dress corsetry. While a lot of them have built in corsets which are supportive (albeit to varying levels), none of them, not even the very best ones, are tight-lacing corsets. They're not steel boned and won't reduce your waist more than 2", whereas a proper tight-lacing corset will reduce your waist by at least 4" for most people.

sarahuttley2b-[keera - I bought a gossard bra, much as you're describing, for my wedding underwear. Not sure what size they go up to, but it makes my bust look amazing! I've never had a bra like it and can't wait to wear it time and time again after the wedding! I've had to leave it at my sister's house to stop me wearing it beforehand! It's called an Oh la la! longline bra.

well after reading what SS said its obviously not a proper corset and guess it wont stop my breasticles from jiggling! :o) I'm currently a 38D but I think I need measuring because I'm almost certain that I'm not wearing the correct size. Also am losing weight so my breasticles are shrinking and I've lost 3 inches off my waist already so i'm assuming I'll have also lost it off my bra size. I saw a wonderbra one in debenhams that is supposed to be good, but I'm rubbish at buying underwear!! x

Remember if you go up a back size you are going to spend your day hoiking it up. Obviously it's not meant to be uncomfy but it should be tight, you should be able to get 2 fingers under the back of it.
It might just take getting used to. Also remember everyone gets a bit of overhang if their bra fits correctly.

It's the mistake most women make (85% of you apparently), too big in the back and too small in the cup. As I said tho, everyone has the hangy out bits and you don't notice them on other women do you? Well I don't! :p

Sara - Sorry if I was confusing things. Dresses that aren't tight-lacing corsets can be supportive enough for the bust; it depends on the dress.

not at all SS, i was just noting your comment and realised that I was mistaken :o) I think I'll have to wait til nearer the time and get something just before my fitting next year as I have no idea what size I'll be then. Dress already needed taking in 1 size as it was too big and it will definitely need taking in at least 2 now as I've already lost a dress size since I bought it so I wont know how supportive it will be til then and I've been told to take my undies with me! I'll wait and I'll make sure I get measured before my fitting and buy something appropriate! You still havent answered my question though :o) What kind of strapless bra do i need? All the ones i've tried feel like they're going to fall down and they dont support my breasticles. Do i need what I call a 'shove 'em up and push 'em out' bra?! ;o)

If they feel like they're falling down then you're probably wearing the wrong size. It's probable that you need a smaller band size and a larger cup size (for all your bras, not just your strapless ones).

i'm after a strapless bra that zips at the front or fastens at the front but i want it to be a bit longer to just above my belly button so that it covers my problem area and gives me a great silhoette(can't spell) don't want to wear a corset or anything like that as my dress does all that for me but haven't got a clue where to start looking! especially for an E cup!

Vikkims - There's nothing wrong with not wearing a bra with your dress if your dress is supportive enough. I'm a 34F (which in cup volume terms is only a size smaller) and quite a lot of the dresses I tried on were supportive enough to go without a bra.

That said, I'd definitely say to get yourself sized properly as the right size bra can make you look at least a dress size smaller!

Hails - The sizers in M&S are pretty useless. They've told me that I should be wearing a 38 band when I'm a 34. Sometimes they get lucky but it's luck rather than judgement. Bravissimo are great but otherwise find a specialist lingerie boutique.

Soon to be Mrs Mann - You may struggle to find a front-fastening bra, to be very honest. You can sometimes find a body (all in one) that doesn't have fasteners at all, but front fastening bras just aren't very popular in this country.

when i was looking for my wedding underwear i got so annoyed as i got told by 3 different places 3 different sizes.

went to house of fraser and she measured me and said i was a 32C but tried it on and it didnt sit right so she said i was a 30D, which i cant find anywhere.
went to la senza and she said 32C and m&s said 32B! how can they not all say the same?

MrsBarker - 30D and 32C are basically the same cup size but at different band sizes. I'd totally ignore M&S as they've never got my size right, even when they've put me in the size they're saying I should be and it's sitting totally wrong. What sort of thing are you looking for, as there are quite a lot of shops online and on the high street who do a 30D?

The differences in sizing is all down to a level of training. Some places still (stupidly) go by the old rule of adding 4-5" to the underbust measurement which went out with the ice age. There's only one place that I'm aware of where that old method works, and even then that's only for their bullet bras.

Really a measuring tape is all but pointless in fitting a bra, as it's really how it fits that is important. Two girls could have exactly the same measurements could be very different sizes depending on how their bits are placed and how big their ribcages are etc. etc.

Bravissimo have a good range in 30D, as do Debenhams, Figleaves and most of the other big department store chains. Sometimes in brands which are particularly tight you'll have to wear a 32C but it's basically the same size.

I haven't read through all of the comments but I know a few women with big melon's are in need of strapless bra's but can't seem to find any in there size.. Well, I may have a solution.

Where I live there's a store called "Perfect Fit" it's an underwear store and they specialise in Bigger Sizes, especially for brides. I popped in just to have a look at what they have and I tried on a strapless bra, now I am a 36J and I've never wore a strapless bra in my life but the one I tried on was perfect, a little big in the back but the cup was great and it was holding me up and giving the big boy's some shape.

The woman who was helping me said that if I wanted that bra she will send it off to the "bra maker" and have it altered to fit me perfectly and it will only cost £5 extra or I can have a whole bra made especially for me and it will cost around £40-£50. I know that's alot but the bra is made to fit you!

So, if you are really struggling let me know and I can post the details on your wall. I'm sure if your no where near Bristol you could just ring them with your measurements!
