I bought the most beautiful dress today, I love it so much, but the only thing I know I will want to change is the train......it has a really long one. I feel its a little bit too grand for my tiny wedding,
BUT....I keep thinking about how pretty it would look in pictures.....

    This is my dress...

    7597041796_4a0830b6bf_z.jpg

Now I can chop it off, or I can leave it as is.....and I could make a bustle for it for the reception...
I looked into different ways of doing bustles and I have hit on the one I will do IF I decide to keep the train....

on the inside of the dress, sew ribbons......you could use different colours so that you can line them up easier. Yhis is someone elses diagram of the ribbons on the inside of the dress..

    16.jpg
    16.jpg

this is a diagram of the inside of the dress, with the ribbons tied

    22.jpg
    22.jpg

And here are 2 pictures of the effect it gives.....you cant even tell it ever had a train. I like it better than some of the other bustles I have seen...

I suppose, it might even be easier and quicker to bustle it rather than chop it off anyway, then I have at least got the option whether to wear it down or not.....but would it be too bulky and heavy?

That is a bit of a massive train.

Would it be too much hassle/risky to chop it off? Would probably be easier to bustle it and let it down for some piccies! Best of both worlds then. Plus then if you wanted to sell it after the wedding it'd still be in one piece.

*E don't imagine it would be too heavy with it being taffeta

Yeah it s an Hum Dinger isnt it? LOL
As its taffeta I dont think it would be really heavy, but it might be uncomfortable wearing it underneath my skirt......Its not too much hassle to remove it really, but I hope I dont regret it. If the train had not been sooooooo long, I might have kept it as-is, but its far too long for my taste......

I think I might bustle it tonight, with ribbons, and that will not only show me what it looks like without the train, (and ill see if I like that) but also wearing the bustle, I will see what that feels like too.....because if it rained on the day, it would stay bustled....

Well yeah but it will be late, got to wait for H2B to go to bed because I need the room so have to do it down here. I will probably get the look, by just pinning it with safety pins......it'll at least show me what it looks like without a train.....mind you I cant do it up because its lace up at the back

The train is gorgeous so at least if you bustle it, it's still an option if you want it, without the cutting and sewing ect :)

I had quite a long train and my seamstress friend put a wee fabric hook and button underneath to hook it up at night. Worked really well :-) Not sure if thats what you always do to bustle a dress but it was good because I had the train long during the day and just buttoned it up at night :-)

It all depends on how you feel in it Anne, go with what you feel.
I felt my train was too long and didnt like it so getting it shortened so it's not too overpowering - but thats just me, everyones different xxx

I am 5'8 and hopefully should be able to carry off the train without feeling swamped, I just didnt want to feel silly dragging that behind me....

But I have done the bustle tonight and I like it.
I WAS going to try the 9 point french bustle, which would have given a waterful effect down the back, but because the back of the dress has lovely pleats, that kind of bustle would have made the pleats disappear, so I did another kind of bustle...(the one with the diagram above) and I really like it. It allows the pleats to still hang nicely, and if on the day I am not feeling very
Train-ey.......I could just bustle it up before I even left the house and no one would even know there was a train on my dress anyway.

It has given me an idea of what it would look like IF I had the train removed, and although I really like it, I cant stop thinking about those lovely pictures I want with the train.......

Tonight I also pinned the hem, I need to take it up about 2 inches, and I put it onto the dummy with my hooped petticoat.......I said I wouldnt wear one with a hoop, and I actually DONT like them much......BUT it keeps all those layers off my legs and is much better to walk in, and I imagine it will be cooler to wear because of that. Later, at the reception if I want to, I can always remove the metal hoop. I really like the look of the dress with the hoop underneath, it makes it more A line......

I think you should have it bustled up and only take it down for the pictures. Then you've got fab pics but don't have to drag that massive train around

I think I need to keep some if not all of the train, so that it hangs nicely at the back, I dont want to lose the pleats, and I think if I cut it off altogether I will lose the effect at the back
    DSCF4359.JPG
    DSCF4359.JPG

And I played around , tucking the train underneath at different lengths....

The first one is the actual length, then it gets shorter....Still cant make up my mind. Lego had a good point, keep the train bustled for the ceremony, and just untie it for the photos, then bustle it up again. I cant bear the thought of it being as hot as it was today and dragging that around, or worse still, carrying it, and even worse than that would be if it was a wet and rainy day.

Oh please dont chop! That train will look stunning on a set of stairs or by your lovely window. It would be a shame and its not fixable once you cut. I think put the bustle in like you have done above so you see the pleats but then weather depending, pop it down for a few photos, you can always clip it back up xx

Well I decided I just COULD'NT chop off that lovely train, and if its a nice day it will look lovely in the photos, if its raining, I will still be able to get the stairs shots, and other lovely shots inside the hotel......like the picture below......
So I have bustled the back, and if it does rain then maybe after I have trailed down the aisle with it, I can carry it with the loops I have inside the dress, and then bustle it for the reception.
