    Hi Everyone,

I got engaged in May of this year and we are planning to get married in summer/autumn of 2015.

So far we have viewed one venue (in our first week of engagement, we were just so excited!) and now we have one more viewing booked for Monday. On Saturday I am going to a wedding exhibition with my mum but this is the only one we have planned as its so local and my fiancee is actually working there on a hotel stand.

I am going through phases of wanting to look at every wedding blog and magasine out there and colleting pictures for a folder I have started, to then deciding to leave everything until at least next year.

So....how early is too early to start planning? When is too early to book a venue? I dont want the planning to be over and all the decisions made too soon but its so exciting im struggling to stop myself! My mum wants to go dress shopping which ive told her is definitely out of the question until mid next year (still 2 years prior!!!) but other than that I dont really know what is okay to start doing? I think I just need something to keep me ticking over until next year so I can start enjoying the planning without doing too much and letting the wedding take over our lives for the next 2 and a half/3 years!

Any idea's and advice much appreciated, thank you xxx

Personal I think 18 months is plenty of time. As for the dress, and this is only an experience of my bf's wedding. She brought it 2 years before loved it for a year but then wen the day came she didn't like it as she felt it was dated. I get married next October and I haven't even started looking yet. Just do general planning like guest numbers, type of wedding you would like I.e; traditional, casual, etc. venue is a good idea if you want a popular date and to allow you to budget. Hope this helps :D xxx

Hails, I like your thinking but have you not driven yourself insane with it? How much have you done? Have you got much booked? x

It is never too early especially when choosing the date, venue, and starting on your DIY projects. I would strongly recommend on holding off on choosing bridesmaids and the dress. A lot of things change in 3 years especially relationships. You don't want to choose someone now only to grow apart from them in 3 years, but you also don't want to drive them to wedding burnout either.

I've already made that mistake unfortunately, one of my bridesmaids has barely been in contact since our engagement party :( however we have been close friends almost al my life so hoping it will turn out okay. The dress definitely has to wait I think, no matter how tempting it is! I dont even want to go and try any on yet incase I think I find 'the one' and end up making a mistake in buying too early.

Samantha, interesting that you bring up DIY projects as the idea's we have discussed are based on a very DIY wedding in terms of invitations and decor, so I'm thinking why stress nearer the time when I could do it bit by bit over the next couple of years...although I dont want everything to be faded and old!!!

Do you have a good place to store all your creations? I think that that's probably the most important thing as you don't want them becoming faded, old, and in the way for three years.

Not really but I could find somewhere, how much have you done? Sometimes I wish we were getting married sooner so I could just get on with it but we would never have the money to have what we want, I need to learn to be patient!

I have a big collection of things for the day but no major diy projects completed yet as space is an issue. So I have the supplies & will make things up closer to the time.

I'm getting married next September we have been engaged for a year now. Within the first month we had booked both the venue and the photographer and had a meeting with our now florist.
I knew who I wanted as bridesmaids and had asked them within a week of our engagement. Yes I do agree with the others about the bridesmaids as I did have a problem with one of them but that's all sorted now.

It all depends on you two and how much you want to spend. But first thing we did was set a budget ours has gone over at the minute by £3k and we are making our own invites, table plan and table names. These can cost a lot we got a quote and it came in at £1k just for the design we wanted we have brought the bits and has come in at £50 quid and we have made the ladies favour boxes as well so a big saving.

We got the bridesmaids dress, my dress and the shoes in June. Also remember when you view venues also ask how much the room costs as well as the civil ceremony as our cost an extra £400 + vat that wasn't in the budget.

The only reason we got bits early is because we are buying a house so we wanted to get all the big bits done before that.

hey im getting married in 2015 and have started planning... got my dress... yes i know alot of have said i am silly but the dress i have chosen is exactly what i wanted, so to be fair it doesnt matter if it is 3 years before or a year before i would have still chosen this dress... plus im not looking at more dresses now.
i have found our venue and made a provisional booking, and started looking for wedding cakes...

i think you can never start to early :)

Too early your so lucky me and my h2b cant book anything yet we're hoping to get married next September but neither of us know when we'll be able to take any holidays, his holidays are allocated were I work it's a first come first served basis. It's starting to do my head in we have picked the venue but just cant book it coz they want a deposit that's non returnable and my mother is on my case about it she'wants to book her holiday .

Every time I think about it I want to scream

    But I'll get there

I'm getting married in 2014. I have booked venue, registrar , car, photographer. Paid in full for my dress, paid half towards my groom's and his best man suits. Designed the cake. Paid dep on one bridesmaid dress. Bought our rings. Made save the date cards and sent some out and making bunting and invites. I am self employed and don't want the stress of worrying about doing things at the last minute and having to worry about the money too so I am paying as I go and hopefully all will be paid up and done a minimum of 6 weeks before so I can relax on the weeks leading up to the day or if I have overlooked anything I will still have time to get it sorted.

I think it's never to early to start looking at what you want. We booked our venue almost two years before and they had already taken other bookings too.

That said, ask if there are any planned changes of ownership/management between the time you book and the big day, a friend of mine did a similar thing and the place really went downhill afterwards.

Things like venues, good photographers and popular entertainers/bands often get booked up up to two years in advance, so I wouldn't wait if you are getting married at a peak time. One of my photographer friends is booked up every weekend in 2013 almost and most weekends between may and sept in 2015.

That said, enjoy the luxury of having time to plan....I think starting of looking at blogs and keeping a scrapbook is a great way of finding out what you definitely do and don't want.

    Xx
