Hi ladies im a new mummy with my nearly 4 month little girl but i was wondering if i could get some advise as im trying to get her into a routine with getting up at 9 and going to bed at 7 but im not sure on her naps in between? Some days i think shes sleeping too much during the day and when it comes to 7 shes not tired.

Also ive noticed that her gums are getting really hard and i can see her teeth under her gums but they arent popping through yet but i was wondering when everyones little one started teething? She drooling heaps and forever biting something mostly her hands or my fingers. Shes also had a few nights and days where we cant seem to settle her and she looks like shes in pain.

My son was teething for months before any teeth actually broke through think he was 7 months when i started seeing them under the gums but 12 months before they came through.

As for naps Bayley wakes up at 7 goes to bed at 6.30 and has a nap after lunch at about 11.30 for two hours if that helps.

My little man was one last friday and he naps from 11-1 , then again at 3-4 and the sleeps right through from 7pm-8am.
Different babies need different amounts of sleep, she will come into her own eventually.
She's still only very young hun, if I were you i'd just let her get on with it, you'll be begging for naps when she stops having them!!!
Maybe make her a bedtime routine so she knows that its coming to bedtime ie, dinner, bath, book, bottle, bed - then she'll get into knowing that once the dinners given the baths coming and the routine will follow xx

with a 4 month old it is hard to expect them to be doing down early and sleeping til late!!!! so i wouldnt expect that unless she's already doing so if so then lucky you!!!! 4 month old is still a young baby so still should be having a couple of naps durin the day! my 3 year old still has a nap a day and his can last 2 hours which im tryin to cut down

defo recoomend the ashton powders though.they can start "teething" from any age tbh so more than likely is..bless her cool a teething ring in fridge or freezer and let her chew on it to try help x

my childrens first teeth came in around 4 months, not the best time for them, we used dentinox teething gel and teething rings. its hard getting them in a routine whilst teething as the pain will disturb them make them tired and grouchy through crying etc. babies will get themselves into a routine without any help but if you're trying to change things round try giving you baby a bath before bed to settle her. :)

i gave spencer ashton and parsons was great,i agree with mrs mollins 4months is still fairly young spencer was having a few naps a day then he is nearlly 2 and only has 1 a day not after 2 though as he wont go to bed,i got him in a routine early though i bath him every night gave him his bottle when was younger and put him down he still woke up then in the early hours, so persevere hun your little one will sleep right through eventually takes time some babies sleep right thru from an early age some dont xx

Sbride - Im breastfeeding her and shes been feeding so well since the day she was born but now i feel like shes hurting me with her gums. Im going to a baby massage class on friday so going to see what my health visitor says.

Ive tried to get the ashton and parsons stuff from the chemist but everywhere is sold out. The say there is a supply problem with it at the mo so we have some teething granules instead and we have teething rings in the fridge for her.

baby has alreayd had 4 months of "goodness" and if a person can't function due to lack of sleep or wants more sleep i personally don't see why they shouldnt try and experiment with bottles and breastfeeding as well..bottles for the night so 2 partners can swop and take turns x

It is true thoughnickers. When being breatfed, babies will wake more often and it's easier digested. Once she's onto solids she'll sleep longer in the night. Maybe speak to your HV about giving her porridge or something in the evening.

Good on you for breastfeeding. I really regret stopping (at 12 weeks) and wish I'd tried to go a bit longer. Little one was 10lbs 8 when born and had a never ending hunger. I started giving her bottles in the evening at 8 weeks and she slept right through. After that though she was never satisfied. Was eating solids at 16 weeks and is still a wee gannet (1in 2 weeks).

yeh but each child is different though....

i no everyeone here has been putting personal opinion but i just feel upset and feel like a guilt trip is put over my head because i couldnt breastfeed and almost like i gave up too quickly when in fact i was nearly on a verge of a breakdown cause i was adament i would get lucas to latch on but he didnt! --- this coming from nurses and midwives in hossie, not here btw lol

lucas ..he's healthy..not the best of eaters..but he's at the right height, weight for his age and nothing coming over him!!! i want to see less pressure in hospitals about the whole breastfeeding thing...dont think people realise how upset it can make mothers that can't for any reason.

Hi Clarabella. I'm a breastfeeding peer supporter and if one of the mums in my area asked the same i would say that 4 months is still young to sleep through and even though we wouldnt think it sleeping for 5 hours solidly is classed as sleeping through according to many health professionals. Babies can start teething from about 4 months but some dont get any teeth until 7 months or even later (though some babies are born with teeth) Like mentioned in previous post ashton and parsons powders are good, ive used them with both my boys alongside teething gel.
Changing to formula isnt a surefire way of helping a baby to sleep through. With many children it actually makes sleeping worse, being used to breastmilk and the way it is made for baby then having to digest something completely different, it can upset tummy and sleeping will get worse.
If she is teething it's likely she's using you to massage her gums, if it's causing you to be sore you could take her off when she does it as she's not actively feeding and put her back on if she fusses for milk. Have you a breastfeeding support group in your area, or you could call la leche league or the nct for advice on positions and techniques for feeding a teething baby.
Breastfeeding supporter head off and mummy head on..... I used the no cry sleep solution to try and get mine into a routine, i didnt follow it strictly but picked the bits i liked and it is breastfeeding friendly. Though at 4 months i just went with the flow, i co-slept with my son in his cot (set up as sidecar to bed) which made night feeds easier. Through the day i let him sleep when he wanted, if i tried to limit it sometimes he was too tired to sleep at bedtime.

Mrs Mollins, please dont feel like that :( You did what was right for you at the time and noone is wanting you to feel like that. Breastfeed or bottlefeed, everyone does whats right for them. No one is better or worse because they did something different. Happy mummy = happy baby at the end of the day.

I express milk so h2b can feed her a night and whenever we're out if ive managed to express enough but i dont want to give up but i also agree that health proffesionals should back off mothers. Its our decision if we want to breast feed our childen or not. I get it that they need to promote it more than formula but i had a lady at one of my parenting classes while i wsa pregnant and she wasnt keen to breastfeed but the midwife made her feel guilty for not wanting to which i thougth was completly wrong!!!!

Everyone ive said to that ive thought shes teething has just dismissed me and doesnt believe me. As of tonight shes now pulling on her ear which shes never done before.

Whats the no cry sleep solution?

Hey clarabella, it definitely sounds as though she's teething - and ignore claims that she's too young for that, my youngest cut her first tooth around the same age! Calpol will help - if she's pulling on her ear it may be that she's a bit too hot (sounds odd I know, but that's what mine did as babies when their temps were raised). At the end of the day, your her mummy and you should trust your instincts since no health professional will know your baby as well as you do x

well said pennieb, when mia was born i tried to breastfeed her and was in so much pain as she fed constantly and she would scream all the time, all the midwives pushed me to carry on even though i wanted to give her a bottle. when we came home she would just cry constantly so in the end we gave her a bottle. when she was weighed she had gone from 7lb 11oz down to 6lb 13oz because i'd had a heamorrage there was nothing in my milk and was advised by hv that i should never have been advised to breastfeed her. now on formula she is thriving, follow ur mummy instinct x

I have 3 children and all of mine were in a firm bedtime routine by 4 months bed at 7 and up when they were up,(all 3 were breast fed babies and my youngest went through the night at 2 weeks) i only had to wake the 2 younger ones because of the school run for my eldest. Sleeping through will happen when it happens regardless (in my opinion) of what milk they are on, but as miasmummy has said, you know your baby best and you must do what is right for you at the end of the day. With teething all of mine were around 8 months before their first teeth poked through, but my friends baby was 9 weeks. If your baby has rosy cheeks and rather hot cheeks and is dribbling loads then you can pretty much be sure she is teething. I didn't find anything that really helped but there is some good advice on products that has been released since mine were that age (youngest now 6) get her checked out by your gp as all of mine developed an ear infection and a cold with every tooth and they ear pulled as well so it could be she is in a little pain. If in doubt check it out, health visitors don't know it all ask other mums too. xx

I dont think people should be pressured into breast feeding coz sometimes it just doesnt happen or sometimes the mum just dont like the thought of it, everyone has the choise as thats their right. I just think if breast feeding is going well then why stop coz its not only better for baby but it also has so many benefits for mum, ie lowers the risk of getting womens cancers, helps with weight loss. Def try giving baby some solids like baby rice, that may help her sleep longer.

My little girl is 16 months old now and only just managed to get her into a routine! I would have thought that at 4 months she is still too young to have a set routine of sleeping through the night from 8 til 7, but I know every child is different and needs different amounts of sleep, food etc. All of my 3 children were very different in sleeping patterns but it all balances out in the end. As for the breastfeeding thing, I have breast fed all 3 of mine but for varying and short periods. With my 1st it was 4 months, 2nd for 5 months and the 3rd only about a month, but it wasn't satisfying her and I wasn't filling up quick enough, lol, so I switched to bottles, but she is certainly a clever and energetic toddler, and as someone has said already, you are her mum and know her best and what she needs so keep on! And h2b needs to be a team with you as regards your daughter, the cold carrot stick can't do any harm, hard to break off and the cold will certainly help with the heat in her gums. xx

    hello all
i havent become a mum (recently) but i have become an auntie/mum i gained custody of my nephew last week he is 5 and has a rather bad start to life his mum (no relation to me) and her partner (not my brother) abused him for about 1yr after she disappeared from us with him. he was in my brothers care from sept 2008 til last week but his new girl (evil B***h) locked him in his bedroom my nephew told my mum and she called social services so now he is will me until may at least.

anyways i'm finding it so hard having a little one lol my daughter is almost 11 and we have my h2b's children of a week one is 13 and the other 4 and thats gr8 i think its coz i dont have to work of a week so its not such a rush etc.. but he is very happy he has told my mum and his social worker which pleases me no end :0) he is struggling with his schooling as he has a mind of about a 4yr old and he is 6 next week he is behind on his reading so we are doing reading each night now and he is very picky over food but is slowly getting better

my reason for telling you all this is coz i need some ideas on reading writing and maths and also some creative ideas for food?!?!
thanks for reading and i cant wait to hear your ideas xx

Sorry i cant help my little one isnt anywhere near that stage. You could get him to help you make things to eat and have alot of different coloured foods like bananas oranges and maybe put cards around the house naming things so he knows already what each thing is and it will also be written on a card so he can read it out alound and then maybe later on you can just get him to read the cards and place them next to the thing it is if that makes sence?

hi hun my little one had a tooth thro about 4-5 months old. dentinox teething gel helped her. as for a routine she gets up between 8am-9am has a nap at 11ish has dinner between 12-1pm has another nap about 3ish and has tea between 5-6pm then has her last bottle about 730pm then off to bed at 8ish. it took us awhile to get her ito her routine and it took me awhile to figure one out that worked for her. she only sleeps for about an 30mins to an hour on her naps but she does sleep thro. she is one now and gettin her to sleep on a nite is a challenge as she doesnt like been left o her own but i think we have figured that out now.

every child is different and u will soon find a routine that will work for ur little one. hope this helps xx

how about getting him involved with the cooking? like let him pass u the potatoes as your peeling them, or stiring things. If my 3 year old thinks she has helped cook something she is more likely to eat it. Make pizza's with him, let him put the toppings on.
