We originally booked our wedding for 2pm and meal for 4.30pm (being called through for speeches at 4pm) now our registrar is only available at 1pm or 5pm so we've booked for 1pm...as our ceremony is at the same venue as our reception, what do we do for the 3 hours before the meal?!?!
Rough timings as follows:
12pm - 12.40pm : Guests arrive 1.00pm : Ceremony 1.40pm : Drinks reception 2.00pm : group photos 2.30pm : We nip off for couple shots whilst guests mingle and have a glass of fizz or two. 4.00pm : guests called through for wedding breakfast / we're announced / speeches 4.30pm : dinner is served
So, problem is...do we need to have canapes or not? We didn't really want them as think they're a load of faff and thinking more along the lines of a mini cake etc to satisfy any hunger pangs before dinner if they are really necessary as we'd actually prefer not to have anything at all...BUT, if you were a guest, would you expect an appetiser during this time? Or is it ok to not have anything?
HELP!!!

My brother and wife had canapes. They came in handy lol.
You could always try take some more time with the group photos to make it less time between meal and photos.

We're having the same dilemma! Out timings are pretty much the same as yours, and we don't really want to have to pay £5 a head for canapes, but we're seriously considering having them as most people will have to leave home well before lunch so will need something to eat before about 5ish. We went to a wedding a few weeks ago and we were all moaning about how hungry we were when we were stood around drinking before the meal!
Very happy to say I'm now Mrs Keates and loving it!
I would say canape - people will only moan if they don't have something to soak up the alcohol with! My MIL2B went to two wedding recently and the timings were similar to yours; she was starving by the time it came to eat and their speeches were after the meal. If you have the money in the budget, go for it :o)

i personally would - our ceremony is at 1pm and we're being seated at 3.30pm to have dinner served at 4pm and we're having them. I just think with a 1pm ceremony its right over lunchtime so some people probably wont have eaten so at least they get a bit of something to put them on xx

Hmm thanks ladies, we've just agreed on a M&S wedding cake to save ourselves money as that's one thing we're both really not that bothered about, so the money budgeted for the cake that we have now saved can always go on canapes. That's the problem with 1pm ceremonies lol x

I see canapes as a luxury item - I've not missed them at weddings where the couple didnt have them, but thought they were a lovely touch at the ones that did. I dont think people should expect anything at any wedding other than their own but if you've managed to work it into your budget that's ideal - I want to but h2b thinks they're unnecessary (they will be happening) x

We are having the same issues - our venue also does bowls of olives/nuts and similar nibbles, they work out at about half the price of canapes so am tempted by them, as they are there if people want something to munch on without being too expensive.
There are so many people out there who will tell you

Our wedding is slightly later than yours at 1.30pm, but we have the added benefit that a church service takes a fair bit longer, so we're looking at coming out for photos at about 2.30pm, then down to the venue for drinks reception for 3.30 with the meal at 4.30. I would say that it might be nice to have something available to give to your guests, but not to worry too much about it if it's not in your budget - I'm sure there will be some crisps around to tide people over :P

Not sure on this one feel that it would be nice to nibble on something but then you dont want them not to eat the meal. May be something light not sure if you are having children but I know that mini me gets moody if she goes along time without food, saying that I always make sure I carry a bag of crisps and a drink with me xx

im lucky as in mine came free, with the venue. But i thought it nice for the guests to have some and a drink while we have our pics taken. Our times are 2pm wedding, 5.15 meal. (takes 30 min to go between church and venue) so service 2 -2.45? go to reception arrive around 3.15-3.30 3.30 - 5 photos (while guests mingle and eat and drink) 5 - 5.15 line up 5.15 food after meal, speeches then cake cutting, then first dance.
