my mum wanted to pay for the majority of my wedding. I said thanks very much, but we'd like to do it ourselves - I said that what would help me out more than anything would be for my mum to buy my wedding dress, which she quite happily did. I thought that the venue is just something you have to have, I wanted a really nice dress but couldnt justify spending hundreds of pounds on one. Mum got to pay for something meaningful and I got the dress of my dreams. Everybody is happy.
If I'd let her pay for the venue it would have been £3000 - she's paid for my dress which cost £600 so its still a large amount of money, but nowhere near as much as it could have been. Maybe you could try that one? xxx

My mum has offerred a sum of money, but not for any particular thing ... also she's paid for the deposit on the flowers, chair covers and bought some ties which she has said isn't going to be part of the money she's giving us! I love my Mum!

When I announced I was getting married, my mum said they can't help me, then when I went to visit them, I showed her photos of my dress, my mum said by the time of the wedding they might be able to give me £1000, but at the time we were supposed to do it in France where they live, now for convenience we are doing it over here, and my mum is delighted but it will cost her a lot to come over here and stay (for at least a week) but she's offered to buy me a cake costing up to £500, I am looking for cake costing at most £200 as I am not fussed about a complicated design and don't want to spend loads on it and I know it will be just as nice, but the fact that she offered to pay for that nearly made me cry, as I know my parents' financial situation is not good and she'll do anything she can to pay for more than that. and for me then that is just the thought that counts.

Or see if they would pay for the photographer - that way you could say it would be nice if they paid for something that you could keep afterwards :) xx

Bless her. Makes me think to my sons wedding (he is only 11)
Defo say why dont you buy my outfit and you would like her to source little personal bit for the wedding that she could get over time and not be such a big financial committment in one hit. x

I told my mum that I don't agree with the brides parents paying for everything! Why should they, its not fair. We're paying for as much as possible ourselves, and even though mum has already bought the dress, she's now insisting that some money will be coming our way nearer the time. I guess parents just will not be told! lol :o) She wants to do it, and your parents are probably the same xx

my mum isnt really in a position to pay for much but she has offered to pay for my dress, my dad is also giving me £5 a week towards the wedding. It feels like im getting pocket money lol

i agree with everyone else, the dress bit is sentimental so im glad of all things my mum is paying for its my dress.
or the other good idea was photographer x
