We have chosen Tutbury Castle for the ceremony as its £550 just for that, but im stuck on a venue for the reception as decided to have that somewhere else because Tutbury Castle is to expensive (£1000 for reception). Is this a good idea?? and any ideas on what we could do for the reception?? We are totally stuck on ideas and venues lol.

Remember to factor in transport costs- it may be cheaper to stay in one place.

Is the £1000 just for the room or does this include food as well?
If its everything thats really good.
Our venue is £350 for the ceremony room, £750 for the reception room then just under £2000 for food (3 course meal for 50 and evening buffet for 75.....grand total of £2995).

If your looking elsewhere tho try local village halls and hotels?

These are the emails I got from Debbie who I have been speaking to from tutbury castle, hopefully will explain whats, what to you ---- = new email

----Thank you very much indeed for your enquiry with regard to holding your wedding in the unique setting of our 11th century Castle. I attach our marquee hire prices and sample menus for catering within the marquee for your information.

We can seat 45 people for a civil ceremony which takes place in the Great Hall, including the bride & groom as well as the Registrar. The Great Hall is furnished with authentic Tudor and Stuart furniture and is the room which has seen visits from many monarchs from Henry III to Henry VIII, and the Castle’s most famous prisoner, Mary Queen of Scots.

For intimate wedding receptions in the Great Hall, we can seat 36 people for a meal and can cater for 45 if you choose to have a buffet. The current cost of the ceremony is £550 plus VAT, room hire is £200.00 for the reception. Current food prices range between £21.50 per person for a buffet and £28.00 per person for a four course meal.

If you solely wish to hold your civil ceremony at the Castle you will have the use of the Great Hall for one hour before the ceremony and approximately one hour afterwards so that you can have your photographs taken and meet your guests. We can offer a champagne and canapé reception at a cost of £4.50 per person.

The Registrar is available for civil ceremonies at 11.30 a.m., 1.30 p.m. or

3.30 p.m. and she can be contacted on 01283 233301. The registration fee is payable in addition to the fee we charge for the ceremony.

For guest numbers over 45 we have a stunning marquee which can seat up to 180 guests (hire fees attached). The marquee has recently been refurbished to an exceptionally high standard and is available from 1st April each year until the end of December. I highly recommend that you arrange to view the marquee to fully appreciate how stunning it is! Please do also take a look at our wedding website www.tutburycastleweddings.com .

The Castle grounds offer spectacular views over the Dove valley giving unique photographic opportunities ensuring that your wedding day is a most memorable occasion.

Should you have any questions at all or if you would like to arrange to view Tutbury Castle, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I very much look forward to welcoming you to Tutbury Castle in due course.

----Thank you very much indeed or your reply. We really hope that we can make your childhood dream come true!
The cost of a Civil Ceremony only is £550 plus vat.
If you do decide to hold a reception in the marquee, we provide tables and chairs for up to 150 guests, although we do have the capacity for larger numbers up to about 180 guests. We would need to charge you for the hire of additional tables and chairs required for over 150 guests.

Please do not hesitate to give me a call should you have any other questions or if you would like to arrange to view the Castle and marquee.

I look forward to welcoming you to Tutbury Castle soon.

    ----Thank you for your email.
If you were to use the marquee, The Castle would require a non refundable deposit of £1000 plus VAT on booking. If you would prefer this could be made in two staged payments. The balance would be due 30 days before the actual wedding date.

I hope this helps and I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

    Best wishes

----Sorry to cause confusion. If you only want the Civil Ceremony and then move to a reception elsewhere, the cost is £550 plus vat. Remember, the ceremony room holds 43 people, this includes the two of you and the two registrars. The tea room is also licensed and will hold 50 people.
I would need to check with the Castle office, but I think you would be able to split the £550 plus vat into 3 equal payments.

I hope this helps. If you are still unclear, then please do give me a call.

    Best wishes

Now you all no as much as me lol :-)

Firstly you are aware the actual cermony room cost is £646.25- and doesn't include registrar?

The sit down meal price is quite good.

Dove you beat me to it was going to say the cermony room was more then £550 because of the vat lol so with registra fees about £1100
If you just want a small cermony with a sit down meal it sounds like a good deal then you could find a village hall and hold a big reception afterwards.

Its still a good price just for the ceremony, I still think be too expensive to have reception there too so would be cheaper somewhere else, we will think about it as from what your saying it sounds cheaper to hold the whole wedding there with travel expenses. Thank you everyone xx
