OK so curious to hear all your thoughts on this as a lot of people seem to be focusing more on the big day rather than what comes after that (no offence to anyone).
Can be anything such as (serious) "Spending the rest of your life with somone you love" or (silly) "Having someone to give you a foot rub every night"
So what does marriage mean to you?

I'm very old fashioned. Marriage means a lifetime of commitment to the person you love. It means devoting your life to them, to stand by their side no matter what life throws at you. If you have problems you sit and work them out, you're both equal partners.
Marriage can be the most joyful thing but it can also be the most turbulent and you have to take the rough with the smooth. People walk away from marriages far too easily and quickly these days, if you can't stick to the vows then don't do it! xxx
It's right what they say

But if it had been easy then we wouldn't love each other as
much as we do right now - 1 week to go :D

Hmm pretty much as it is now ie sharing everything, keeping no secrets, having huge laughs, working through the tough times, being a family unit, being with my best friend/husband.
I feel it may bring a little bit more security to my 10 yr old who loves Steve to bits and has called him Dad since he was 7 but never quite understanding why we all have different names. Getting married for us is to make a commitment to each other that all the things we do and feel for each other will be for the long haul, and to celebrate this with all the people we love and care about. xx
I have a gorgeous husband!
2 brilliant wonderful boys, a wonderful life
in Cornwall. Happiest woman ever!
Now making our house a home. Blessing 2014.
The fact that we will be a complete family unit, Making the ultimate commitment to each other. For better for worse, richer or poorer, in sickness and in health :D knowing Steven is Devoting himself to me by becoming my husband and making the lifelong commitment to myself and our girls :D.
He always said to me he didn't believe in marriage at all, I must have had some effect on him! :D

kerrylou, you took the words right out of my mouth!
To me marriage is the ultimate commitment and something not to be entered into lightly or because 'everyone seems to be doing it' like i have heard a few people say. It is to spend your life with the other half of your heart and soul. Some people say mariage is just a piece of paper and why bother seeing as we have been together for so long, but it isnt about a piece of paper, thats just a formality.
CommentAuthorgreyarea
We aleady have everything but that bit of paper so a lack of escape route justs adds a lil more sercurity

I'm old fashioned in the sense that I believe in a real commitment to my partner, that's why I want to marry him. I don't want to be just his partner or girlfriend for ever.
We have been together long enough to know each other inside out and can reduce the other to tears of laughter with just one look. That to me means it's time to take our relationship to the next level
Can't wait until the day I become Mrs. Johnson :)

I think I have found the best man in the world and I want him all to myself, forever. We get married and he is mine and I am his. I can't remember what it was like before he was there and I don't want to think of a life without him. Also, I said no babies until we are married ;0)
Got married 11/11/11.

To be fair that big day is just a big day in which I make things legal and share the day celebrating with my friends. I'm already committed to Kev for better or worse and I already tell him this daily. I already made my vows to love him till death do us part and the big day isn't going to change the relationship that we have now. I can't imagine a life without him in it. I don't think a wedding changes anything (other than your bank balance and tax rights) If the relationship is strong there isn't any need for a bit of paper to prove you are together. I guess in some ways we are doing it because its what is 'the done thing' to do when you want to start a family etc.
I know on the day I'm going to be emotional yet happy and I'm getting nervous at the thought of showing what is usually something personal to the both of us to all of our friends. Things like the dress, cars, venue etc don't really matter that much to me although we are having the wedding that we have both dreamed of since we were young. I guess we are making all our dreams come true although in reality we already have everything we could ever want.
CommentAuthorMrs Brakes
I'm not looking forward to the wedding as the 'big event' that I know it will be, (I'd rather it wasn't all that) I'm looking forward to it as the day I become married.
Got married 11/11/11.

Marriage means having someone in your corner no matter what, and being able to offer that to someone else too. It means having made a promise to each other, in front of the people that mean the most to us that we will be faithful forever, and take the hard times with the good. It means we have the best situation in which to start our family (hopefully soon after we get married!)x

Better legal standing for the person I had planned to spend the rest of my life with anyway - lol.
No actually I am more romantic than that, and think that it does mark out a proper commitment to someone, but my heart knows I already made that commitment, this is more kinda making it legal and letting everyone else know the same thing :-)

marriage to me means that when i die someone will notice i am dead and i wont get eaten by the dogs cos no one has visited me for months!! (iv seen it on the tv and that worries me!!)
but seriously because i want to grow old with someone that i can walk down the road with when were old and more wrinkly still holding hands knowing that we have grown old together and been there for each other through thick and thin and that no matter how much grey hair we have we still love each other exactly the same as we did at our wedding day

We're having the big wedding just because we'll never do it ever again and want a big celebration and everybody loves a good wedding lol I still want to be just as loved up when we're 70+ as we are now =D

well most people have already put down what i would have said. i cant imagine living my life without chris, he is everything i could have possibly imagined. i know so many people who get married jsut for the attention. and that's in the literal sense lol. i am old fashioned. i wanna spend my life with one man and have my family with him. i want our unit to be whole. we got a few things to learn to do. we both as stubborn as each other and we have our whole lives to learn to stop being that bad. although, i am getting better than him. he'll cut his nose off to spit his face cos he that bad lol. if people are getting this divorce insurance they are now doing, then they shouldnt be getting married. it a lifetime commitment not just for a big party in a fancy dress x

At the moment I feel like the odd one out in my family as the kids have H2B's surname. Marriage means showing my undying love for my man and giving him my everything. I know we live like this anyway and being married to him will not make me love him any more but marrying Neil just makes us complete. As I said in another thread it is the start of our rest of our lives and I can't wait to be Mrs Armstrong and start planning the arrival of baby Armstrong :) I guess I can't really put into words what marriage means to me as it means the world to me to know he loves me enough to have me as his wife. xxx
CommentAuthorMadam Butterfly
I share the traditional views of marriage too. Marriage is to commit yourself to your husband and as it says in the vows, for the bad aswell as the good..sickness and health, joy and sorrow, richer and poorer and to promise to be loyal, caring, respectful and to love and cherish your husband until you are parted by death. You have to work at a marriage as whether you like it or not its not an easy ride, there will be many ups and downs. Marriage also means we will be ready to start having a family :)

its partly so i've always got sombody to tell me if my hairs a mess, or ive got my dress caught in my knickers. Also becuase he's warm at night, and if theres a ring on his finger, i get to slap the girl whos trying to steal him xD [am kidding. i think] In seriousness; im marrying him becuase in our hearts we know we're made for eachother, and the BigDay is more about letting our family, our friends, know that we rally mean it. We've been a little on-and-off before, so it's going to be nice to tell everybody "we know; we're sure" i also believe that getting married young, as we will be, [about 23] means that we've got eachother to grow up with, to share life with. thats what im looking forward to most; to be able to look at him in 80 years and say "you remember when we were 17 ..." <3 x

I'm getting married for many different reasons......
Because I DO want to have a fabulous amazing unique day, one that I will never forget (without the pain of childbirth!!)
Because me and Dan have been through so much over the past 5 years and I've realised we are just meant to be- despite the resistance by me, due to having a very, very, awful unsucessfull first marriage!
And because Dan has said we're not having any more babies till we get married, and as I want two more we'd better get on with the wedding!
Commitment dosn't scare me marriage does!! But I do love him too :-)

to quote the proclaimers whose song we will be playing at our wedding: Lets get married, i love ya, and i wanna stay with ya, lets get married, have kids and grow old and grey with ya, lets get married, hold hands and walk in the park.... we're ready for tieing the knot, set the seal on the feelings that we've got. We can make each other happy or we can make each other blue, yes its just a piece of paper, but it says i love you. For the good times, when we can do no wrong, for the bad times, for the moments when we think we cant go on, for the family, for the lives of the children that we planned, lets get married, come on darlin please take my hand.
Its about a life time commitment and partnership with someone i dont ever want to imagine living without.

Gareth is everything to me. I can't imagine life without him. From day one it felt like we'd known each other for years and I knew I'd spend the rest of my life with him. In the five years we've been together we've been through the great times and the sad ones too and I know that I wouldn't have coped (and still couldn't cope) without him. He is my best friend and just knowing that he is there makes me feel calm and happy. Marrying him would just complete who we are and make us one :) xxxxx

life time commitment, fun and laughs with someone I love - not worrying if I get seen without makeup or with my hair in a mess cos I know he loves me for who I am... hmmm all serious I'm afraid.
