    Hi there!
So in a nutshell - h2b is in the MacPherson clan, his best man is a Dunsmuir, and my dad is a Walker.
I want everyone wearing the same tartan so that they match - I really don't want 2 or 3 different tartans in my photos of the bridge/groom/parents/bridesmaids/bestman.

Does anyone know the etiquette surrounding who wears what tartan? My family aren't Scottish but I want my Dad in a kilt :)
    Thanks,

    Rosi xx

No idea hun, but I've managed to convince some of mine to wear kilt, and it will probably be Stewart tartan as my colour's will be red! I am Scottish but I'm the only one lol. I'd perhaps go with your H2B's tartan, it is after all his name you'll be taking! That is, unless someone actually knows the answer to your question

just read ths on a kilt website:

Should all the male members of the wedding party wear matching kilts?

This isn't strictly necessary. Generally, people think it's nice to see the bridegroom in a different tartan so that he stands out from the rest.

    Thanks :)
I said that to h2b. He said it'd be OK for my dad to wear their tartan, but the best man would wear his own, which would make it all look a bit messy I think!

I'm not Scottish, but h2b's family are. We are considering wearing a kilt, well not me but the meen lol. H2b is gunn clan, but obvI'm lucky cuz so is the rest of his family...ie his dad, and grandad. I just assumed I would put the best man, and any ushers in the same kilt, cuz I agree with you and wouldn't want a whole mismatch of colours...for me it's bad enough trying to come up with a colour I like that will go with the gunn clan colours. I really would like to acknowledge his scottish roots though. I think I may start looking into just having the gunn clan colours for h2b, and then everyone else in a grey or black kilt, or a plain kilt if that makes sense! x

Thanks :) I just want his dad, brother, best man, and my dad all in the same tartan, but apparently since the bestman isn't in the same clan as h2b he will have a different one and I don't know if its ok to ask him to have h2b's one!

Well we've got the groom, and the 2 best men in tartan and the dad's wearing "normal suits".
My H2B wanted to wear the Irish National tartan (Irish decendant) but its GREEN and not in my colour scheme so I've vetoed it and changed it to GREY SPIRIT which technically is an Scottish tartan but at least we've both compromised as he gets the kilt and I have the colour scheme :)

I'm choosing a tartan that fits the colour scheme for all the men to wear. I don't think its set in stone that they should wear their own nowadays. There are a lot of tartans made now which are not connected to a clan (Flower of Scotland, Blackwatch, Pride of Scotland, MillenniumTartan etc.) so anyone and everyone can wear them xx

h2b just seems to think it would be awful to ask his uncle (best man) to wear a tartan that isn't his. They should all wear the same I think. I don't mind the guests wearing different ones, but it is like bridesmaids - I want them in matching dresses and the men in matching kilts.

tbh its all about you joining his family so why not make everyone wear h2b's tartan? or like kat said just make it one that isnt anyone's eg flower of scotland, pride of scotland etc

I do quite like his family's tartan, and he really wants to wear it, so I'm totally fine with that! I'll have to talk to him about it again. He may have been annoyed because I was in a big mood with his mum hehe.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I wish I knew the etiquette surrounding this! x

can he hire his clan kilt tho Possum? not sure you can hire Dunsmuir or walker either. So unless they got their own kilts already you might not have a problem.

shaun is getting a kilt made for the wedding, and the best man already has his own kilt, and my Dad will be wearing Macdonald so although I would love them all to be wearing Scotland Forever (its a gorgeous purple!) it looks like it will only be Shaun wearing that!

I don't know if the best man has his own kilt, he is the only one that is the problem! I'm hoping to convince h2b to just ask him to wear the MacPherson tartan.
They're all so confusing because although h2b is Carson, the family used to be McMurdo, and that is in the MacPherson clan :s
So I don't know if Dunsmuir would be in an easily accessible tartan's clan, if that makes sense?

we have had this dilemma....scottish wedding Irish groom.... hes wearing Irish National (whole colour scheme has been planned around this!!!) so is best man but all other guests are choosing their own .... its a tough one but a lot of our guests have scottish or Irish connections so have a tartan that relates to them so we didnt feel we could ask them to do otherwise.... we'll see how it looks????

i would still go and check what is available for hire before anyone decides anything. There is only a limited number of tartans you can hire, only about 5 or 6 in my local shops. Could be all this arguing for nothing!

I know we can get the McPherson one. And think that h2b's uncle (best man) has his own kilt in his own clan, so it's a little iffy xx

He won't - it has to be MacPherson apparently!
I asked for a compromise - if Jim would rather wear his own kilt, he can. But we have to hire the MacPherson one which doesn't clash too bad!
