Hi eveyone i read a post earlier about a b2b who was having students do her catering to cut cost with her in mind i phoned my local college and asked if any of the 2nd year media students would like to video my wedding as i was not going to have a video just people with their own cameras the college said they would be greatful for the opertunity(sp?) and how many students would i like i said two because they will both capture differnt angles and people during the day and the best bit is they ar free !!!!! I will however pay them for their time i will agree that away from college as they are not supposed to get paid but still it should be fun and if not then i haven't lost anything as i didn't think i was having a wedding video .

Great idea.. they will take time over it too as they will want to create the right impresseion for any future work....
That sounds good! Well done - I have a second photographer who wants to practice (I have also kept my professional one!) I am hoping she will catch things he doesn't and working on the basis that it is not possible to have too many photos!!

Hi all,
Students producing classy, elegant, contemporary wedding videos? :-)
It sounds a good idea I agree, especially from a price point of view. But, I was a student once. I did an OND and an HND in Professional Audio and Video Technology. I can tell you that as a student, I wouldn't have cared how your wedding video came out. I can show you my assignments to prove it if you like? Haha.
As a professional videographer, I might think of taking a student on a part time basis as a second camera person. That would be low risk to you, the client. But I wouldn't expect a student or group of students to produce a professional video for me.
If you're dead set on the idea of using students to create your wedding video, all I can say is you need to set your expectations accordingly. Ask to view their previous work. Expect less. You will of course argue that it's free and so if you get nothing back, you haven't lost anything. I personally don't think you will think that AFTER your wedding is over and you watch a dissapointing video.
At the end of the day, nothing is free in this world. You get what you pay for. If you're paying nothing, chances are....
Kind regards,
Andrew. www.carillonvideo.co.uk

no offence andrew but to me that just comes across as bítchyness from someone who gets paid to do this kind of work. When someone pics a student for something (even hair or make-up) you know to to expect the world of them but to say
"You get what you pay for. If you're paying nothing, chances are...."
Its a bit unfair to state that cause they're students they wouldnt produce anything worthy of looking at
but thats just my opinion

Hi stacey-gracie,
You are correct. I tried really hard not to sound like I was being bitchy as you put it, but even then I guess I must have a bit. it wasn't my intention.
All I am trying to do is manage expectations. Or more accurately, advise brides how to manage their expectations. Producing a poor wedding video reflects on wedding videos as a whole. If you follow the advice I give and you check out their work prior to engaging their services, then you will know what to expect from them. Just don't lose sight of the uniqueness of wedding videos - you only get one shot. Makeup can be redone. Hair can be redone. Even photos can be redone to a certain extent. The video cannot.
Of course, Spielberg was a student once upon a time. The student that produces your wedding may turn out the be the next George Lucas. I am just trying my best to give out quality advice. That doesn't mean I am always right. I just hope I am right the majority of the time. :-)
Kind regards,
Andrew. www.carillonvideo.co.uk

Hi Andrew thanks for your input i do see where you are coming from my reasoning behind asking a student is more down to the fact that i wasn't having a wedding video anyway and don't care to see myself in video, i am not really that bothered if i get nothing i didn't even want pictures !!!!!! Everyone starts somewhere and for a budding student to have a laid back family to video on our happy day and grow in confidence then i say let them try, my photographer is a pro but he was a student once and without someone giving him a break he may have never got to where he is and yes you were being bitchy because you thought i was being cheap now you can hopefully see i just don't mind and like to give a person a chance

Hi Mrswright2b,
I'm glad you can see where I was coming from. I was trying to give impartial advice. That's why I wrote this:
"you need to set your expectations accordingly. Ask to view their previous work"
And later, this:
"check out their work prior to engaging their services, then you will know what to expect"
And I really don't want you to think I was being bitchy. In all honesty, I sat and read my post through about ten times and I kept changing bits of it because I really didn't want to come across in that way. I simply wanted to offer my advice.
Lastly, I certainly don't want you to think that I thought you were cheap. My reference to price came about purely because your first post said this:
"to cut cost with her in mind"
Which lead me to believe you were to some extent prioritising price. Indeed, that was obviously the reason for your post because you called it, "Student Videographer For Free".
Regardless, I do hope that when your wedding is over, not only do you have a great video, but you come back on the forum and tell us all about it and how it worked out. :-)
Kind regards,
Andrew. www.carillonvideo.co.uk

I agree, it's a brilliant idea. Personally I don't care to watch myself on a video so was just having a photographer, so if a student can learn and we can get something back, as amateur as it is, fab! If anything, it will give you a giggle!!!!

I think that is a brill idea. I think Andrew might just be a bit cheesed off someone (i.e. college students) are offering their services for free when he charges for his services, which is to be expected of course.
What he doesn't take into consideration is people's budgets and personal choices.
Also if I was a student being asked to take part in someones wedding, even for free, I would work very hard in order to make sure they weren't disappointed, not only for the couple but for myself aswell. They could easily get recommended to do serveral weddings off the back of good recommendations from the wedding party. I know this applies for most students, so lets not tar every student with the same brush! x x x

Hi Roxy21,
I can assure you, Andrew wasn't cheesed off in the slightest that someone was offering their services for free. :-) I was, as have pointed out, merely trying to highlight to pitfalls of going down that road and hopefully offer some sound advice along the way.
I believe my business is one of the only ones in the country that is willing to give out free advice to anyone regarding video. I also realise that not everyone can afford a professional video and of course some people really want to create their own video because it's personal to them. In recognising this, I have started a new thread in the 'expert' forum to give away what I hope are good tips to those who wish to make their own videos. I hope it's of some use to everyone on the forum that is thinking about wedding videography. Be sure to drop in and say hello!
I also welcome emails and phone calls through my website from anyone who wants a bit of advice. I am passionate about video and the technology used to create video. I am interested in the techniques and fashions, the business side of things and the future of video. If I had my way, I would eat, sleep and drink video. Alas, my wife might have something to say about that. :-)
Kind regards,
Andrew. www.carillonvideo.co.uk
