why on earth do things have to be so complicated??. we are going to give notification of marrige on friday, because i was born after the year 1983, i have to provide a full copy of my parents birth certifficates!!. i dnt speak to my mam n my dad lives miles away, wich means i have to chase around to get a copy of them wich in turn means yet more money. iam getting so stressed out now as if they dnt charge y enough to bloudy give notification. what a stupid carry on :-@. think i should go back to bed and start again

If you ask me i think it is really stupid!! iam confused with it all too iam getting really wound up about everything, you have to have a passport or a drivers licence also, neither of wich i have got! Iam really panacing now that we are not going to be able to give notification and that this wedding aint going to happen :-(. sorry yea if you were born after 1983 the letter i have says this-- if you were born after 1983 and dnt hold a british passport you will need to provide parents full birth certifficates

They have to give a bit of leeway I think as many people don't speak to their parents etc and could create difficulty in getting that.

I had to show my mums passport and buy a full birth certificate of my own as I only had the small one.. such a pilava lol :) xx

so it might be easier just to get a passport at the end of the day! certainly easier than trying to get parents birth certificates by the sounds of it!

It can be done a lot cheaper but I needed it ASAP so needed to get it fast tracked.. that's why it's a good idea to know for sure in advance what is needed so you have plenty of time to get it all :) xx

I think it's to do with a law change regarding your nationality. If you were born in Britain before 1983 you were automatically British, regardless of your parents' nationality. If you born after 1983, you aren't automatically entitled to British citizenship, if your parents were, for example, Chinese, or Hungarian.

So if you were born after 1983, and your nationality hasn't been tested/proved by (for example) getting a passport then you have to go a little bit further to prove you're British! In other words, your birth certificate alone showing you were born in Britain isn't proof enough to show you're British - they need a bit more info.

Yeah that sounds right DP.. They said to us that passports wern't enough proof for them so they needed to see full birth certificates :)

Passports aren't proof enough??? That's utterly daft, your passport is proof of your nationality!

Someone at your registry office doesn't know what they're talking about!
