    Hiya,

I'm planning on getting married at our local registry office (Croydon) and then having the reception somewhere nearby, or in the area - but I'm running out of ideas on venues!!! I'm waiting to hear back from a few places, but the prices we've been getting are a bit ridiculous for our budget of £5000! We're now thinking of just hiring a hall and organising our own catering etc etc - any suggestions on places/where to look?!

    Thanks! x

Hey. Welcome to the site! Whereabouts have you already looked? Is there a particular style of venue you are looking for?

    Hey, thanks :-)

We've looked Selsdon Park, Coulsdon Palace, Addington Palace, Eltham Tudor Barn (and more that I can't remember!) But we were put off by the price, especially for food! We've only got 50people to feed, but then 50-100 extra people coming for the remainder of the evening. We're now looking at halls (currently waiting to hear back from Royston Hall in Penge and then I've got two more places to phone on Monday - Croydon & District Masonic Hall & our local community centre in Crystal Palace). We just wanted something simple - but I don't know what to do except google 'halls for hire in South London' which isn't throwing up anything useful apart from what I've mentioned! Any suggestions??

Hi Joey86. A friend of mine got married in October at Addington Palace. I think she may have paid a small fortune for it though, even though she got married in the 'Royal Marquee', which was a whole load cheaper than the palace itself.
Depending on numbers, you could try Fairfield Halls - they have a number of rooms with varying sizes available.
If it could be a bit further a field, then you could try Cafe Provencial in Herne Hill (they can deal with numbers up to about 100) - that's where we're having ours - direct bus to/from Croydon too! The manager (Adam) is great and he won't rip you off. He's only asked us to cover the cost of him having to close for the day. Although strictly a restaurant, he's doing it in a more informal style for us, with a buffet table in one section, a space for the disco and small tables for people to sit around to eat/drink and me merry! Let me know if you want details and I'll post to your profile. x

Oh! I know where that is - always think it looks cool when I've been past on the bus, never been inside though! Buffet would be great as well - simple and informal is exactly what we're after :-) Details would be great - thank you so much!

Fairfield Hills is a possibility - haven't quite made our minds up on that one!! x

Lemlau - Surrounding areas is cool - but obviously somewhere close to Croydon would be good due to transport etc, however, if not, we can deal with that lol. We looked at the Aerodrome hotel - still a possibility at this stage I think. But we'll see! Thank you so much for the link!

Wow, so glad I joined this place - none of my friends are married or engaged so had no-one to ask about these things until now!! Cheers :-)

The Aerodrome Hotel has a wedding fair coming up over the next couple of weeks - you could check it out then!

Selsdon made our top two - we loved it and when we went to see it set up it was BEAUTIFUL!

I saw the wedding fair advertised - and definitely thinking of going!

Oh Selsdon is gorgeous! Did you pick it in the end?

We didn't. The ONLY thing that put us off was that we couldn't have the bigger room as we are only having 64-70 gueests and they want a minimum of 100 for it.

We chose Sundridge Park Manor in Bromley last April and then, shockingly, it was on TV (Channel 4, Wedding House). I've LOVED watching the series, even though it wasn't very popular as a show.

Oh that's a shame about Selsdon - but Sundridge looks absolutely stunning! Gorgeous! I didn't realise it was on Wedding House though - but tbh I didn't watch much - just random bits when channel-hopping lol.

I feel a bit too eager going to a wedding fair - we've barely picked what year to get married in! But it's free, so guess there's no harm in going! Think my OH is slightly worried I'm going to go wedding-crazy if we go lol.

I would go just to get ideas - you pick up SO many cards, samples and ideas and as you haven't chosen an actual date yet, you won't book anything, so your H2B needn't worry!

Haha good point! Getting engaged has made me become very eager to get organised - and I've never been organised. Think all my friends and family think I'm going crazy in my over-eagerness!

    Believe me I understand.

The first week I got engaged, I spent about £40 on wedding magazines!

And do I really need 9 books with 'plan a wedding' in the title? Oops...!

I bought a wedding magazine a few days after, but then I got freaked out with the thought of planning so threw it away after a read - me and my OH then decided no wedding-talk until the new year! So now we've settled on a budget, I'm fully entitled to go planning-crazy!

To be honest, I now only buy the two little (and thank goodness cheap) ones as they have realistic ideas in them. i subscribe, so they are cheaper than buying them in the shop (hope that's not classed as advertising by the mods - sorry if it is...).

We've been holding back on the planning, but since January 1st, I've been on it! So great when you finalise your ideas and book things.
