Ladies, how does the "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" tradition work? some of them speak for themselves obviously, but i mean, who arranges it and is it still "done" as a tradition? x
CommentAuthorMrs*Maria*Louise

lol Jill!! A lot of our plans so far are quite tradiitional so will probably do it but need to get thinking of the "somethings!" H2B can buy me something new :) x

My friend is treating me to a blue garter, which covers blue/new, and old/borrowed was totally stuck on but copying a friend of mine using one of my moms brooches dad got her when first going out and pinning that to my bouquet handle, so its a bit vintage too :-) x
i am struggling for something old and something borrowed. have just put my status on facebook asking for offers of sparkly items people may want to lend me!
CommentAuthorJill
Dee I think that's a great idea. I'm not sure about blue garter, I thought I might get my h2b's football teams badge on my garter - he'd love it and it'd be fun. I might get blue diamantes spelling out 'Mrs Dunnery' on my personalised knickers lol x

LOL love the idea of the personalised knickers :-) x

personalised pants - thats brill! I've got plenty time to decide! x
CommentAuthorA.Bird2b
generally the something borrowed is supposed to come from your mother, though I won't be doing that, my sister is organizing it all for me because she says the bride isn't supposed to do it.....
CommentAuthorKat831
a traditional rhyme which details what a bride should wear at her wedding for good luck:
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a sixpence in her shoe.
The old item provided protection for the baby to come. The item borrowed from another happy bride provided good luck. The colour blue was a sign of fidelity. The sixpence—a silver British coin—was a symbol of prosperity or acted as a ward against evil done by frustrated suitors. The superstition is known since 1883 when it was attributed to the county of Lancashire
I'll be doing it, love all the traditional stuffmx

You just reminded me of a programme I watched Kat, where they said the reason bridesmaids have similar dresses on was to confuse evil/demons so they couldnt take over the bride/lead her astray or something lol x

I think I'm going to do it. MIL2B is letting me borrow her hankerchief. It was given to her on her wedding day 40 years ago by her mother, who received it from her mother on her wedding day! Turns out it was MIL2b's grandmother made it! So this could cover the old and borrowed, or do you have to have something different to cover each part? x
CommentAuthorA.Bird2b
you don't have to have something separate for each part, some people even manage it all with just one or two pieces, ie. an old blue handkerchief borrowed from your mother and a new thing!
CommentAuthorMrs*Maria*Louise
aww thats lovely clare and no i think you can use one thing for more than one part xx

I've hoping to get a sixpence from my dad (he used to collect old coins and still has a few) so that's my something old. My dress, shoes etc is my something new. Still haven't got anything for my something borrowed, and can't think of anything. I've just bought a blue garter for my something blue.

I don't know what to do for my something blue. Because of the way my dress is fitted I can't really wear a garter so might have to get something like a blue button or ribbon sewn into the hem of my dress maybe x

My something new is my dress, Something Blue is a garter, yet to get but I will, Something old is a tiny picture, in a frame, of my Dad (attached to my bouquet) so that's he's with me! And something borrowed, I'm hoping to borrow my mum's or MIL2B gold watch as my strap mark is a bit obvious! xx
WARNING:
I say the first thing I think of!
CommentAuthorkimmy
Iv'e borrowed an old silver sixpence which will cover old and borrowed!!!
CommentAuthorclive
only thing i will suggest, is, for your "something blue", PLEASE don't dig out the latest copy of "amsterdam hotties" lol:-)))
CommentAuthorPapillonEmma
I think I may try and incorporate all of this poem in one item. Im currently thinking I shall buy a new blue garter, and borrow an old sixpence and sew it into the garter. If I wear it on the left leg it will be close to my left shoe!
CommentAuthorNatashaParkes
I'll be wearing my nan's necklace for the something old, it will be nice as it will feel like she is with me. Something blue I'll get a blue garter. Something new is dress.
For any ladies that are stuck if you look on the bay of e there is something that has a blue swarovski heart crystal, a lucky horseshoe both on a blue ribbon that can be attached to garter or bouquet. also the poem of old, new... and a sixpence for your shoe. Apparently the sixpence is old, the charm is new, the poem is borrowed and the crystal heart is new. I think its about £5 my mom is buying it for me but I still want something borrowed and I'm pretty stuck on that, plus I wouldn't want to borrow off my mom as I would not want the luck she had in her marriage lol. So I have no idea what to borrow and who off
CommentAuthorMel D
I did it myself: New - dress, shoes, etc Old - pearl necklace that was my 21st present from my mum, and it was her 21st present from her mum Borrowed - earrings Blue - Chelsea garter (I'm the fan, not him)
Natasha, could you borrow something from one of your bridesmaids? Or your MIL2B?

I've sorted my own too: New- dress old-grandma's charm bracelet borrowed- my mum's pearls blue- a ribbon with my grandma's and grandad's names on pinned to the inside of my dress.

FutureMrsClarke, I had that thought about the TARDIS today- The Big Bang was on BBC3 this evening :D Dippy old me only just got that it was old, new, borrowed and blue. D'uurrr! Just bid on a TARDIS keyring, which I may attach to my garter (provided it doesn't weigh it down... and I actually win it, lol)
My Something Old: The ring my late grandfather gave me when I was a baby, tied into my bouquet My Something New: My dress and everything else I'll be wearing My Something Borrowed: Not sorted out yet, probably will end up being a hair grip from my mum My Something Blue: My garter
and possibly the TARDIS to be all of them, haha *is a geek*
I'm not bothering with the six pence thing... I'm wearing open toed shoes and I'm likely to end up having it fly out the front.
