Short history for you first..... I was working full time (37 hours a week) in a job I hated. Changed jobs to do my dream job but it was only 22.5 hours a week at first, then went up to full time to cover maternity leave for someone. Last November it went back to 22.5 hours and hopefully going up to 30 hours in April. H2B got laid off between Xmas and New Year and started claiming Job Seekers Allowance (contribution based). That pretty much covered our rent so we managed ok with that. Couldnt get anything like housing benefit or council tax benefit as he has a little money in the bank which he put aside from the sale of his house, will be the deposit on our house when we buy it in 2012. Anyway. He went to sign on on Monday and mentioned that he is getting married in April. They told him that because he is getting married his benefit will STOP. Will not get a penny! So I have to support him and three teenagers in the house on my part time wage! Or use the money put aside for our house deposit. Ouch. Seems a bit rough, you would think the government would support the institution of marriage and family, not penalise people for wanting to make that committment. It stinks. Especially as he has contributed through his taxes since the age of 16 and not taken anything back from them until now.

i know the benefits system is all wrong! i would suggest going to cab and ask if there are any benefits that you can claim. can you not transfer the money into a different bank account for example a parents so that they dont know?

i know this is wrong but when i was on job seekers they asked if i had any savings and i had about 5k sat there but only told them about £300. that money was for my wedding from compensation in a car accident and didnt want to live on that!

you may be able to claim other benefits. it is worth a look xx

Oh I know the benefits system in this country absolutely stinks not only penalising you for being married but also for working in my experience- It's one thing I get soooo cross about.

Anyway can you claim any tax credits at all?

its unfair but they do it because they class it as your a family so theres an income coming in,av u contacted the tax credits, you should be entitled to something from them to top your wage up,my partner works 50 hrs a week on a good wage,i had to stop working when i had my blood clot and we didnt know how we d cope but we now get £100 a week from tax credits which is a real help.you want to give them a ring.x

Were having the same problem, I am currently unemployed, but because James works I am not entitled to any benefit, to make it worse I have to pay for the bus every fortnight just so i can keep up my national insurance payments. Its horrible for h2b because he can't afford to give me any extra money- at the moment he is managing just to cover our bills. Something just doesn't seem right when genuine people who really do want to work aren't given basic benefit because their partner works, regardless of the fact that they can't afford to live of one wage. We tried appealing the decision but it came to nothing.

They said because I'm earning he is not entitled. And he wouldnt transfer his savings for our house because he is too honest! Its just an unfair system. Basically my 30 hours will have to support me, him, my 20 year old daughter who is volunteering at the moment as she cant find work (despite zillions of applications!), my 18 year old daughter (doing A levels and off to uni in October) and my 16 year old son. So really, I will be supporting 5 adults on my own!

I dont have much faith in the tax credit system I'm afraid so dont really like to deal with them - a few years ago (pre-H2B) they really stitched me up as ex HB did not send his form back, and then partner after that did the same. Result was I ended up having to pay back £4000 in 'overpaid tax credits' that werent overpaid at all, I was entitled to them but because my ex's refused to give details of their earnings after we split up and their annual renewal packs went out to them, I had to pay it all back. Went to appeal and it went on like that for about 18 months, was so stressful but I still ended up having to pay it back even though it wasnt my fault. So after having that experience I dont like dealing with them any more!

I'm worried now as I'm on incapacity. I'm sure they told me as that is contribution based that I can continue to claim it when I'm with h2b so I'm hoping that when we get married that doesn't stop too cause I'm already loosing my uni funding etc that the h2b will have to pay for. I'm hoping that once I qualify I can either get a job working from home or set up my own business so I don't have to scrounge from the government as I hate it but needs must. It feels like the ones that do things the right way by the books get screwed while the ones that have never worked get everything.

It's a bl00dy nightmare to be honest. Last year H2B was unemployed for 8 months. He lived in Dublin for 9 years, but was born in B'ham and lived here all his life apart from these 9 years. As he lived with me and I had a full time job, he couldn't claim a penny in any benefits. I had to support the both of us - paying London rent, this isn't funny at all. Plus I'm paying off debts etc. It was tought, but we did it, but only cos he used around £8K of savings he had to top it all up.
That's all gone now, which is why we're still renting (was for a deposit on a house) and doing the wedding 'on the cheap'.
I really don't know what this country is coming to with all the changes that are going on. So many people are saying the same thing. I don't know how some people will survive to be honest.

The system is a joke, I'm sorry they are being so difficult for you, I hope something comes up soon... it really is getting to a point now, when you see some families being given tens of thousands of pounds a year in benefits, living in the lap of luxury and often better than those who work full-time...and then there are those who really need it who are entitled to nothing! It needs sorting tbh.

Last year h2b lost his job and tried to claim JSA... I'm a student living on 6k a year, we live together so were assessed as joint and apparently he wasn't entitled to anything as I was 'earning' enough to support both of us. Needless to say, this year has been hard and we struggled for a time... I've managed to get through the year without any textbooks as we just couldn't afford them! Thankfully he's just found a job and we're looking forward to seeing the back of the past few months.

I'm sure if he looks into it further he'll still be able to claim contribution based - as I think this is based on past employment and how much NI you've actually paid. If this is the case, then he can claim it no matter what his circumstances (married or single). You can get tax credits though, as long as you're working over 16 hours per week - and you do get a bit more if you're working 30 hours or more. You should be able to get child tax credits for your 16 yr old, and your 18 yr old if she is in full time education.

my mum is signed off work, my step dad is disabled and cant work, my mums child tax credits got stopped because she phoned them the day after they got married to tell them they got married and they stopped it saying you should have told us straight away, they told her she should have told them on her wedding day cos they dont accept information early. he tax credits were stopped for 6months! they work on nothing but income support for her, disability for him (which mum sees none of) carers allowance goes to some other woman, so they get income support child benefit for my sister and housing and council tax benefits.

Mum has to pay her x husband credit card bill as when they divorced it was she kept the kids and paid the credit card (20,000 on booze) or he took us kids including me & im not even his! so she chose to pay the credit card so that he got a court order to stay away from us kids! this was the courts offer too! she is still paying it off and they got divorced 12 yrs ago!

She was "borrowing" money off us (we know she cant afford to give it back) but now dean has been made redundant with no pay out we cant support us let alone her & my sister too.

They can do it, they will do it....but they shouldnt!

Sara you need to ask the jobcentre for a HC1 form as if you are diabetic you can claim free prescriptions with your medical conditions but you have to fill the forms out in order to get it. While you are waiting for that you are better of doing prepayments as it is then £104 for 12 months to get all your scripts or I think £28 for 3 months. Either option will save you some money.

Jane - I work 28 hrs a week and get just over £110 a week which is a combination of working tax credit, child tax credit (my son is 17 and in full time education), and child benefit. For two kids I presume it will be higher, especially as you're the only earner. Maybe check out if you're on the correct rate - as it's better in your pocket than the governments lol.
