Hi everyone, I'm new to this, so please be gentle with me! ;-) Myself and H2B have only been engaged for a couple of weeks and have just started TRYING to find a wedding venue for next July - Sept. We want something small (less than 50 people) and really relaxed, chilled out and family friendly. We saw a couple of 'farms' where you can hire a barn to decorate and a few cottages so that both families can stay for the whole weekend. Something like this would be perfect, but I don't really want to spend more than £5000 and the ones we've seen so far are more than this. Arranging our own food is not a problem, and probably preferable as that way we can get a BBQ going for everyone. It's really important to us that this is a real family & close friend event (there will be 15 children), so I don't want parents worrying about kids eating properly, behaving impeccably etc. Being able to run around outside would be perfect. I just wondered if anyone had seen anything like this on their travels, or been to something similar. I don't mind spending money on the accommodation, but then £4k on an empty barn seems a lot!? We aren't bothered about dancing etc as there won't be enough people to make it worthwhile, and since everywhere seems to include facilities for this, along with staff for catering etc, I think this is where the additional charges are coming from that I'm not really bothered about. Any help, advice, ideas, suggestions, or just telling me i'm being unrealistic if that's the case, will be greatly appreciated! :-)

I get married in less than 2 weeks now and we are only having 35-40 people. We had huge problems finding somewhere. We didn't want a hotel, and as you say the barns which look lovely are really expensive. We found somewhere with a chapel and a gazebo to accommodate both of our ceremonies but they charge us for a minimum number of people even though we're not having that many. I hate the fact that so many wedding venues boast about being one of the top venues, yet wont cater to what the customer wants. What area are you in?
Thanks guys :-) Sorry, missed one of the most important things out!... We're in Derbyshire, but really don't mind travelling further afield. Especially if we can stay somewhere for the weekend. We don't want a church ceremony either, and hotels just seem too formal and a not as relaxed as we'd like. I thought it would be easier trying to do something low key, but it seems the complete opposite atm!

We had 20 of us at our wedding, and got married at Gretna Green. Our venue was the Old Blacksmiths, followed by a meal/reception at one to the local hotels - then we spent the evening in the hotel bar (late bar, own CD's etc).
If you don't mind travelling as far as there, there's lots of venues in Gretna that cater for smaller weddings and are very family friendly. We couldn't believe how friendly the locals up there actually were - nothing too much trouble (we travelled up there from Leeds).

Have you looked at the smaller hotels hun? Ive just googled family friendly wedding venues in Derbyshire and quite a lot came up but obviously I don't know what they are like. Xx

I know of a good hotel package though I know you said you weren't keen on hotels. I'll post the link on your wall anyway if I can find it :)

There's a possibility in the New Forest, but I appreciate it is quite a distance from Derbyshire. I would post the link on your wall but I can't at the moment. They often call it Wedding in the Wood.

I looked at Gretna Green when I was planning, although I'm right down in the south. They do some great packages and it looked really nice.
