    Hi ladies,

I'm only having a relatively small wedding with around 60 guests total & it would probably make more sense if I had a 2 tier cake, instead of 3. To be honest I think 2 tier will look tiny & not how a wedding cake should look & I really want a 3 tier.

However with financial considerations & the amount of waste I may produce I'm trying to be sensible & just go for 2. (I don't want a dummy/polystyrene layer as price wise this is not much different to a 3 tier.

Has anyone had/having a 2 tier cake & could you share your cake pics.

    Thanks ladies xx

Have you considered having a false tier? It would work out much cheaper than a proper 3 tier, but would give you the look you want; might be worth a thought?

i think doing them like this works! using the pillars to give it more height then can even add fresh fruit or flowers to the top to make it taller two tiers but still grand!

One BIG day will lead to lots of little happy days !!

Thanks girls, it's just it's gone from a princess castle cake to possibly a 2 tier, so I'm feeling a little disheartened.

Thanks for posting the pics xx

What about having a 2 tier cake on a 3 tier stand and then put some cupcakes round the bottom? or put cupcakes round the bottom 2 tiers and just have 1 tier to cut? You could make the cupcakes yourself to cut costs? xx

We have a small wedding too. 55-60 for the daytime and we have decided on a 2 tie cake and cupcakes. The top tier will be a small fruit cake, for the tradition of keeping for the christening or naming of the first child. the second will be for the evening guests and the cupcakes will be for the day guests to have with their coffee or wine, which ever thy choose.

The 2 tiers on pillars can still look big and grand - or what about one of those modern stands where each tier is on an individual base arm thing?
I put my own cake together using M&$ plain wedding cakes - added a few flowers and feathers - it worked out under £100 for their ex large, large and med tiers.

If your heart is set on 3, I'd have 3 and try to cut costs somewhere else x

went put out bags so people go could take it home. we cut it and then the venue cut it all up in small bits for everyone so they could take home bits of each flavour. they just didn't cut in to the top tier as that was our special tier

Are most people just giving cake to day guests? I was planning on serving during my evening reception as my wedding breakfast will include a dessert. It means having a bigger cake but I'm hoping it will flow better that way..... I've not been to many weddings so i'm never sure how things are supposed to be. :)

Natalie - The weddings I've been to the cake has just been cut up and put out during the evening reception..
I've heard some people are killing two birds with one stone and reducing their money by not having a dessert (so reducing the meal cost) and giving the cake out for it instead and then putting the leftover cake out for the evening.. xxx

My auntie and uncle had a two tier cake on their wedding. It was square with red ribbon going across the bottom of each tier and a cake topper of the same flowers as the bouquet. It looked lovely. If I can find the picture I can send it to you.

A lot of cake shops can do a polystyrene tier which looks just like the other tiers of the cake - you could discuss this as a possibility? Although I agree with a lot of the other ladies that I've seen so much wedding cake leftover and wasted!! xxx

Im having quite a lot of guests (creeping up to 150 with evening guests :O) so we have gone for a 5 TIER cake and it is blooming huge! but we are serving it as dessert in the evening and im seriously debating getting some doggy bags for people to take it home with them. It was expensive but we absolutely loved it on sight so we got it and have saved on other little bits instead.

Why don't you have a look at M&S wedding cakes....some ofthem are FAB and you can jazz them up further yourself...before we found ours we were going for their dark chocolate and fruit one!

Definitely consider a "dummy" tier if you want it to look grand. You won't be able to tell the difference between the cake tiers and a dummy tier (unless you cut into it lol). It might not make it that much less expensive though as it still requires the same amount of icing, decoration and time to decorate. If you go down this route it'd be worth asking how much it would be for a dummy tier and the same tier made of cake so that you can compare the costing. It's really common to have dummy tiers.

If you want real cake instead of dummy cake...why not just have each tier smaller...same amount of cake just smaller sized tiers.

Alternatively why not get the slightly larger cake in 3 tiers and do a good deed and donate the smaller top tier to a local nursing home for the residents to have a cup of tea that way they get a wee something different and you will get what you want and feel like you have done something nice while planning your wedding (it's a way out of being a little bit selfish for something you really want)

or get the 3 tiers and take a tier home and slice it and freeze it and take out when you have friends round for a cuppa xx

    Get a fake cake tier!

But you could have two tiers of real that are for the wedding and keep one as a first born christening cake?

Or freeze it and just have it for a long time!

One girl at work who just got married had a small cake and still had loads left but wasn't a problem as she just kept bringing it in toher and husbands work! Military folk love lots of cake !!!! to have with tea!

Cake should always be bountiful at work! ;)

If you really want 3 tiers i say go for it, thats what im doing, there is a thread on here about leftover cake with some really good ideas for whats leftover as well so you dont need to worry about what to do with the rest of it- just trying to kill 2 birds with one stone there- i understand what you mean about the false tier, they can be just as much as a real tier so might as well get something out of that tier rather than just a lot of extra icing i suppose. I really hope that you come to a conclusion that makes you happy :) x

We're having mini-cakes and just one small cutting cake- the wedding cake can be anything you want and you can do it in so many ways. If you feel two tiers isn't quite "oomph" enough spice it up with a fancy cake topper or cover that baby in roses.
To be honest I don't think anyone has ever looked at wedding cake and said "that's clearly not grand enough" haha, it's just another one of those details us brides obsess about that others don't really notice xx

We had just one large tier - as personally none of us really like loads of tiers on a cake. We wanted something different and fell in love with a large 'open book' with our names, date of wedding and venue name on the cake, with the bride and groom toppers 'sat' on the cake as opposed to the usual standing position. We travelled about 90 miles to get just what we wanted but it was definitely worth it.
