At our wedding after the ceremony we're not having a traditional wedding breakfast and plan to have lunch at a country pub instead. Our guest list is a max of 60, which means even if we just pay for food for everyone that could be £1,200! OH thinks that's daft and that we should let the guests pay for themselves, is that cheeky? After all they will be catered for at the evening reception/party

Can't wait until the day I become Mrs. Johnson :)

I've been to a wedding in which we all paid for our own meals. Just let people know what you are doing in advance so they have time to save.

Oh but if you are going to all rock up at a country pub you need to let them know in advance or they may not have enough food or seats for you all.

Thanks, of course we will book somewhere well in advance and let people know. Just wondered if it was considered normal to let people pay for themselves

There are so many people doing it these days because its the only way they can afford to get married. Feeding people takes up such a big chuck of your money.

i wouldnt find it cheeky as long as u let ppl know maybe u could even give them the option to join u later at the reception instead if theyd rather not pay?

I cant see anything wrong with asking people to pay for themselves in lieu of presents. I would be happy to do that so I could be part of someones wedding. You get to have full choice and will get something you actually like and if people do not like the idea then they dont have to come! You might have a problem with a pub catering for 60 people all at once but you could suggest people pre order their food

If they want to share in your day then they would happily pay for their meal. One of our friends was going to do that when she got married and we were happy to pay for our food, as we knew they were on a budget and were just flattered to be invited. In the end her dad paid for them to have their reception at a hotel but we would have been absolutely fine with it. If any of your guests don't like it then they are obviously not wanting to be there for you, but the free food! :)

Thanks all, might have to go back to the drawing board now, the pub we were thinking of apparently only has a capacity for group bookings of 30, and our guest list (after tweaking) is over 40, doh!

As long as you tell people what the deal is, it is up to you what you do.
