I am looking online this morning at prices for bridal make up and am slightly shocked at the costs, over £100 for a trial and make up on the day, then of course there's hair and nails.....oh dear.

OH asked about bridesmaids, is it expected that we pay for their hair and make up too? I'm only having two bridesmaids but if we pay for them as well as my it could be over £250!

Can't wait until the day I become Mrs. Johnson :)

I would maybe think we should be paying for hair to be done unless any of them are good at doin it but nails is a personal thing that can be left upto them n makeup they can easily do that themselves so I would just give them th option of doin it themselves or joinin u just let them know how much it costs?

If you want things done a certain way, you should really pay

However if you don't mind how they do it, offer them the choice of paying or doing it themselves.

I'm paying for mine but only cause I have found someone that does all of us @ £30 per person for both hair and make up so for that price I can't grumble at all. Its not expected for you to pay for their hair and make up and some girls may even want to do their own rather than let someone else do it. You could always offer them the services of your make up artist and see if they want it doing and tell them how much it would cost them then let them make up their own minds if they want to go to their own salons etc, DIY or use the same lady.

I think, as we ask them to be our BMS we should pay. Suppose I'm just a traditionalist! I'm paying for everything for my two, I would feel a little cheeky asking them to be BMS then landing them with costs they might not be able to afford. To keep our costs down though I am doing my own make up, and the girls will be doing their own too. All doing our own nails the night before. And hair? One has quite short hair that wont need anything doing to it, the other is just having curls so will only cost £39 to have that done. Mine will be another £39. So only really £80 needs to be spent (though I did spend £120 on Benefit make up which will last me a life time after the wedding as well!)

I agree if you wanted your bridesmaids all to have a certain look with certain shades it would probably bes best you pay for theirs, if you don't mind what their make up is like and trust them to stay within your ideas of make up then I think its perfectly acceptable for them to do their own, or pay for their own. You are the one that should be the pampered, polished one on the day, your bridesmaids are there to support you more than anything not expect you to pay for their make up. xxx

Another way of lookin at it tho is if they weren't bms they would have to buy new outfit shoes bag etc as guests as most ppl do for weddings so as they are bms and we are paying for there outfits I'm sure most wouldn't mind paying into have their makeup done afterall it's gonna be cheaper than buyin a whole outfit! I know I wouldn't mind!

Both my mum and one of the bridesmaids are hairdressers, so i am not going to be paying for theirs to be done.As for make up im sure they will be fine doing it themselves, i never had much of a choice of who i wanted as bridesmaids (thanks to my mum) so she is getting their dresses, etc and if she feels strongly about it the make up personally im not paying a thing for them, except flowers which will only be about £25 each.

I'm not expecting my bridesmaids to have the same look when it comes to make up, after all they are two completely different people though I would think they would have the same or similar outfits.

Thanks for all the comments, nearer the time I will speak to them both and sound them out. They may be happy to do their own on the day!

Can't wait until the day I become Mrs. Johnson :)

My MOH and her sister are great at doing make up so I'm considering asking her sister to do ours (she done the make up for their mums wedding and it was lovely). Almost everybody suits brown/gold too so there shouldnt have any arguments about the colours, I trust they'd go with colour scheme even if they're doing their own.

With hair, I have known my MOH and BM for years so I know they both suit (and love) curls... no trial required so decided I'll pay for them to go to the hairdressers on the morning. Not sure about myself yet though on either... plenty time to decide :) x

I am paying for mine & my maids. Mainly coz i want there hair to look how i want it! hahahaha. So my rationale is... If its me that wants them to look a certain way-as in they wouldnt normally have their hair put up. then i will pay. So its me footing the bill. Granted it isnt expensive. I think its gonna cost me £150 for me (inc trial), 2 adult maids & a child maid. Oh and my mums hair too. So not too bad really. They do a package where they do a bottle of sparkly wine and some nibbles too.hehehe. My hairdresser has been my dresser for the past 6 or so years. She is younger than me and a lovely girl. I have actually invited her tomy daytime. So she is gonna be my personal hair and make-up all day!haha. Yay.

As for make-up. I am not paying for anyone, except myself. I cant stretch any further. So i said if they want make-up they will have to pay for themselves.xx

I am not paying for myself (not in my budget) so I am certainly not paying for them. One of my bridesmaid even proposed that they would do my make up and hair, and we'd all help each other. They will come to mine the day before anyway and we'll have a girlie night altogether, so no probs.

I think you should pay. You have asked them to be your maid, so why should they fork out for hair and make-up??
I'm paying for mine, but they are not getting any trials. They are just getting simple stuff done on the day.

nails and tans, well they can sort that for themselves!

I don't think hair and make up is something that HAS to be done let alone paid for though. Just because they are maids doesn't mean they have to have their hair done by a hairdresser. It could be they just style it as they would everyday. If they were coming to the wedding as guests they would do their own hair and make up or pay for someone to do it.

I'm paying for their hair but they're having whatever they want. We're all doing our own make up and nails tho. It's costing £195 for the three of us on the day to have three hairdressers come to the venue. My trial is £25.

It might be a good idea to have a look around at different prices, I found a make up and hair beautician that comes out to you and doesn't cost the earth, i'm not getting married til october next year so figure I can start saving now so i can afford to pay for my bridesmaids. They are doing me the honour of being my BM's so I think its nice to treat them too x

2 of my bridesmaid's are adamant that it's the 'done' thing to pay for their hair and makeup - the other two are quite happy to do it themselves. H2b was horrified - said to them 'if you think we're paying for your hair and makeup after buying your dress and flowers, paying for your meal, drinks and transport... you can get lost!'

Next year I will be a bridesmaid (a few months before I am a bride!)... so far, the bride to be has chosen dresses and shoes for us and hasn't asked us for a penny. I plan to ask her about this, but to be honest, neither the dress or shoes are anything I would wear again so I'm hoping she's not expecting us to pay. If she would like to try to sell them on, I am happy to help her do that.

As for hair, make-up, nails, tan(!)... well I know she hasn't thought about it yet. However, I wouldn't expect her to pay for any of that unless she wanted to specify any of it... she knows my style is much more relaxed than hers so if she doesn't specify then I'm sure she realises that what I choose to do might not be what she or the other bridesmaids will... I'm a bit of a tomboy, I've never had a fake tan in my life, wear very little make-up, I've had a couple of simple manicures but never false nails, and I wear my hair long and natural. Now I've written this I'm going to find a moment to have a word actually to make sure she's happy!

However, my answer would be that if you specify something, I think you should pay. If you're happy to leave them to decide whether or not to book anything professionally, then you don't have to.

Sadly we have no budget, so my 2 girls are paying for their own dresses. I have said though, they can pick their own so long as it fits the colour scheme and they don't look like either a tramp or a nun! One BM is a hairdresser (winner), and my cousin might be doing my make up, so will ask if she minds doing theirs. Its down to the individual, I don't think that there is a wrong or a right way!

Im paying for mine, but I'm only having one and i know that she wouldnt be able to afford it. saying that though she was perfectly happy to do her own, she didnt mind either way.

however on the other hand at sil2b wedding her chief bridesmaid expected sil2b to pay for it (yet she wont be paying for cbm at her own wedding next year)

I think its personal choice, but if you want them to pay, give them as much notice as possible

I'm paying for my 2 BM's hair and makeup and dresses but they will wear their own strappy sandals. It will be entirely up to them whether they want their nails done and if they do they will pay for that themselves. They will not have a trial though.

Everyone is different though and if your budget cannot stretch to it you can ask them if they can do their own hair/makeup or if they want it done by a professional they can pay for it themselves, however, be prepared if you're not paying for them to insist they call the shots on the hair style.

    xx
