Has anybody ever thought of just going to a registry office, getting married and that's it? No reception, no party, nothing? I am really thinking about it! Me and H2B haven't officially booked anything but are have set a provisional date and are considering lots of options,we just don't have much of a budget. In fact we have nothing! We did have savings but we have just got a house together so everything has gone on that and car repairs etc and there are so many unexpected bills that it seems like we will never be able to save up. I am really thinking of just paying the fees for the ceremony and at least then we will be able to be married, but the problem I have with this is that although I think it's a good idea now, in the future I may regret not having more of a wedding, especially as I only plan on doing it once haha! I think I'm just having a bit of a wobble now that I've actually worked out how much everything will cost, but any advise would be appreciated! :) x

I think if you're unsure about it already, then maybe it's not what you should do? At the end of the day, the most important thing is actually getting married and we can all get lost in the planning of our big days that maybe sometimes we lose sight of that. If it's what you want, not just because of money, then just go for it.. but like you said, you don't want to regret it in the future.
If I was in your situation at the moment I would sit down and work out what we could realistically save from now until whenever - from there, this should give you a rough date. Maybe you should push your provisional date back to give you enough time to save up for the day that you want?
Are there any other compromises you could make that would reduce the costs? I know you're already thinking about skipping the big sit down meal and going for a buffet etc.
Have you spoken to your h2b about it? How does he feel? xx

I have found some cheap bridesmaid dresses online so I know I can get those quite cheap. I am going to make favors and anything else I can myself. Yes, I have cut out sit down meal, which also cuts out the need for chair covers, a lot of flowers etc, just not sure what else I can cut out! It's just the venue that is putting a huge strain on the budget! He basically said the same as me, he wants to get married as soon as possible and he would be fine with just having the ceremony but he knows I would regret it years later xx

You don't need to have an expensive venue, our local social club charges £40 for hall hire (£100 inc there dj) & the drinks are very cheap there too. Unfortunately ours wasn't big enough for our numbers :(

How many guests did you want to invite? Most of the chain hotels offer very good package deals for smaller weddings. I saw many under 2k some even 1k, which included everything ceremony, hall, food, drinks, decor, dj, etc
A friend of mine I use to work with didn't want the whole wedding at all she just wanted to get the legal side done and that was it. In the end, because her family convinced her to have a proper ceremony, so she bought a simple white gown off the peg and they had a VERY small and intimate ceremony in a pavilion at a park right across the road from her flat followed by a meal with their immediate families at a nearby hotel... when she looks back she says she was glad she did the wedding part which was nice and low key but would have been happy just to go back to the flat and relax with the family.

Hadn't thought of a social club! Just had a look at a function room near our church and it is £220 for the room with a DJ included so not too bad! We would have around 40 in the daytime but if we are skipping the sit down meal it would be around 70 for the buffet/evening.

if you get the latest slot possible at the registry office, maybe about 4.30, then you can go onto the evening reception x

Does the church have a hall? Do they allow alcohol (not all churches do)? A church hall for a reception would be a cheaper option, and probably very convenient, assuming it's big enough. School halls can also be very reasonable to hire, or a local university might have a large room. You could reduce it further by asking guests to bring a dish and doing a bring and share buffet, maybe even in lieu of gifts. For the wedding dress there are charity wedding outlets, and most shops will have sample sales as well. If you have friends that are good at baking you could get them to do wedding cakes.
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.
