    Hello!

I'm getting married next year and my dear mother is making my wedding dress. As such, I need to make a decision about what length it'll be.
Now, I'm not a heels kind of person, and in the evening do I definitely won't be wearing heels (Actually I think I might go for something like these, I have a tendancy to take my heels off and dance barefoot at weddings!)

BUT I don't know whether to wear heels for the ceremony and formal photos because they're more flattering, in which case my dress will need to be longer... I don't know what to do! I guess I need advice on two things:

    1) do heels make enough of a difference to your overall appearance that I should wear them for the ceremony at least?
    2) What length of dress should I go for? Will it look silly if its too long in the evening?

Here's a pic of the dress:

You wear whatever you are comfy in, if you want flats go for it, or if you want a heel just go for a kitten heel

Comfort is way more important especially as you'll be on your feet for so long. Would small wedges work? It might be best to try your dress with lots of different shoe heights and see if it looks odd changing from small heels to flats. X

I would wear what you are comfortable in. If you don't like heels, you don't have to wear them at all. You can wear custom c0nv3r53 or just a pair of lovely flats.

I love the idea of those for the evening. What are they called and I will have a mooch for myself as I am the same.

I might just go for flats all day then.
I can't really try my dress with different shoes, because my Mam is making it from a pattern I need to choose what length it'll be before it's made which is why I'm struggling a bit with a decision.

They're called barefoot sandals, I found them on an 3t5y shop 8yV1v1nn3 :) they do loads of them and they're quite cheap - I think they're made for Beach Weddings really but I think they're really pretty!

I think you could get a lovely pair of flat dolly shoes.

I've been thinking the same! I always feel better posture wise in heels so plan to wear heels until after the first dance. Then I'm planning on changing in to flip flops. I had considered something like your picture as I love the idea but I'm not a huge fan of the idea of dirty feet on my wedding night so I'm going to get some for my honeymoon instead!

But like the others have said, wear whatever is most comfortable. Though I would probably do the dress length just above the toe maybe if you're measuring it with heels (or have 1 - 2 " heels that shouldn't make a major difference when taking them off.

I wore shoes with a heel of bout 2.5-3" for ceremony and pics (well, some of the pics as I took them off part way through the the group photos and stood on my tip toes lol) then I had a pair of kitten heel shoes for the evening and nobody noticed that I'd changed into lower heels

Faye just from a dressmaker pov I would recommend always going for extra length when making the dress. Give yourself an extra few inches at the hem and then if anything happens (such as a little fraying when you're making it depending on the fabric) or if you happen to find a gorgeous pair of heels you fall in love with or whatever. You can do the final hemming along with final alterations a week or two before the wedding, once you have decided on your shoes.

Basically it's always best to allow extra length because a dress can easily be hemmed and shortened but not as easily lengthened :) x

Thanks ladies! Feeling a bit calmer now!

Ahh FutureMrsW I might do that then.
I was worried that it'd make a big difference and I'd look daft half the time if I wasn't the same height - you can't really tell with your pics though MrsBarrett!
I'm sure i'll have more of an idea what i should do closer to the time so I'll just have it longer for now.
I'm hoping we'll be able to make a practice dress in cotton or something relatively cheap first!

One of the other ladies on here (Leasa I think it was) did similar to me and you couldn't tell that she'd taken her shoes off either, so you may not need to worry too much especially if you're not wanting very high heels to start with lol xx

Yes I think most of us will be taking our heels off at some point! I doubt anyone will notice :)

I usually look for cheap bed sheets in charity shops to use for yardage when I want to practice a pattern x

Wouldnt happen to be your company would it Christina? LOL.
I love the barefoot ones, I really wnated them but I bottled it when I realised at some point I would have to go outside with nothing on my feet.
Dress your dress have one of those loops you can tie around your wrist for the evening?

It's not got a huge body /train to it so it probably won't need one Stephanie!
I'm thinking of having a band of elastic out in the bottom near the hem inside so I can pull it together in the evening and turn it into a puffball skirt though! Not sure how it'll look yet, need to do a dry run

Im sure it will look fab!
My SIL had a similar thing like drawstrings to it shortened the train, it was wonderful and I still cant get my head around it to this day. haha.

I think heels give you a better posture when walking, I wish I could wear heels but as H2B is the same height as me he asked me not too so I'm respecting his wishes.
