I've just been researching this today. I'm thinking about "O Tell Me The Truth About Love" by Auden. There's also a song arrangement of it by Benjamin Britten so I may have a friend sing it during the ceremony.
I came across this too which although I won't use, I find very funny :-)

We're having:
The art of marriage - Wilferd A Peterson. Read by h2b's Nana. The blessing of the hands - Anon. Read by h2b's Mum.
Although we're having a traditional church ceremony I wanted to steer away from the traditional bible verses that everyone has and we loved these two! X

We had The Art of Marriage read by my godmother and Dan's stepfather read out a re-write of the Khubla Khan poem that he had done especially for us.

We're planning WELL in advance!!
we're having 3 I think otherwise the ceremony will be really short! We're having The Velveteen Rabbit for definite, and then if I get my own way we'll also be having the one from Now We Are Six (A. A. Milne) and Hope is the thing with feathers (Emily Dickinson). I really wanted A Lovely Love Story by Edward Monkton because its really sweet, but when I read it to adam he said he couldn't follow it, so that was a no :o(
CommentAuthorLittleMissBossy
I prefer the ceremony on the shorter side - too long and the kids will all play up...
Interesting choices everyone!

If you're having a civil ceremony which I assume you'll have in a hotel youvare strictly not allowed to have any religious content anyway.
Try googling alternative readings for weddings or non religious readings - often it takes you to other forum threads with great ideas.

Be my Homer I wanna be your Marge. If I'm your Norfolk Broads Will you be my barge? Let's please be Tom and Barbara, I will show you The Good Life. Even though we're not yet married I would love to be your wife.
I've the passion Lily Munster has for her dear Herman. I would love you if you were ginger, I would love you if you were German. Like Mr and Mrs Huxtable, We'd smooch even when we're wrinkly. I'll even consider ironing your shirts, But I hope you like them crinkly.
Like Mr and Mrs Incredible I'm flexible and you're tough. But if you promise to be my true love That will always be enough. Like Bonny and that Clyde guy without all the dying. Like Gwyneth and that Coldplay man without all the crying. My partner in crime, the love of my life, My muse, my joy, my fun. Please be my one and only, Cos you've always been 'The One'.

I think we're going to ask fil2b to read an extract from "On Marraige" by Kahlil Gibran, missing out the first verse which is a bit too religious for us.
"Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.

Or maybe I should read this?! On second thoughts, maybe not.
Love me when I'm old and shocking Peel off my elastic stockings Swing me from the chandeliers Let's be randy bad old dears. Push around my chromed Bath Chair Let me tease your white chest hair Scaring children, swapping dentures Let us have some great adventures
Take me to the Dogs and Bingo Teach me how to speak the lingo Bone my eels and bring me tea Show me how it's meant to be
Take me to your special places Watching all the puzzled faces You in shorts and socks and sandals Me with warts and huge love-handles
As the need for love enthralls Wrestle with my damp proof smalls Make me laugh without constraint Buy me chocolate body paint
Hold me safe throughout the night When my hair has turned to white Believe me when I say it's true I've waited all my life for you
If only life could be one long tea break

My cousin is doing our first reading and she is writing her own which she has said we are not allowed to hear till the day lol, i have asked my mum to check it though ;-), we havnt decided who is doing the 2nd yet, we have asked h2b's daughter, she is 14 at the moment but will be nearly 16 by the time the wedding comes she is unsure if she could stand up and do it, if she does it will only be a short reading. If not im not sure who we will ask, i would like my uncle to do it but then that might offend my other uncle so think h2b will choose someone x

Is it me and my horribly dirty mind that interprets "bone my eels and bring me tea" as a very peculiar metaphor?!

It doesn't help that is in the first verse it says "Swing me from the chandeliers, Let's be randy bad old dears." - Instantly puts you in the mind set that it's filthy!
Dan won't have Morning is Broken because it has the line "Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden". All things bright and beautiful has "The purple-headed mountain". Once you've got something in your head you can't help but start seeing it all as rude.

I had high hopes for the dinosaur one. H2B and I have a toy dinosaur we bought when we started dating. We called him Mr.Wigglebutt cause when you press the button he sticks his b u t t in the air and wiggles around. It really amused us and still does! lol.
But when I read it, it was really hard to follow, badly written, badly structured and didn't make sense to me. It also plays on gender stereotypes too much for my liking, it doesn't fit us at all. Like, I don't forgive my H2B for his 'faults' I accept them and love them as part of who he his.
It's just not for me!
I am liking Sonnet 116 though.

This is 1 of ours as it feels like vows arnd our Cypriot legal vows are very unromantic. Not sure of a 2nd yet.
'I Promise'
I promise to give you the best of myself and to ask of you no more than you can give.
I promise to respect you as your own person and to realise that your interests, desires and needs are no less important than my own.
I promise to share with you my time and my attention and to bring joy, strength and imagination to our relationship.
I promise to keep myself open to you, to let you see through the window of my world into my innermost fears and feelings, secrets and dreams.
I promise to grow along with you, to be willing to face changes in order to keep our relationship alive and exciting.
I promise to love you in good times and in bad, with all I have to give and all I feel inside in the only way I know how. Completely and forever.

Aw, those would make great vows.
I put H2B on the case and he came up with some great Fraggle Rock extracts!
"There's a story going around, and it started long ago. Everyone keeps telling it, in places high and low. And because my heart is weary, I really want to know: is it true what they say? Is it true there is magic that we have never known? Is it true there are powers that we can call our own? Is it true there is someone whose wonders stand alone? Is it true what they say? Is it true that the doubters say that they believe? Is it true that the sceptics finally receive? For a heart that is weary, it matters through and through. Is it true what they say? I know that when we wander with an aching in our hearts; we've been waiting around and hoping for the magic time to start. And now, there's no more waiting; good news for me and you. Because it's true. Yes it's true. It's not because they told me so. It's not because the story's old. It's not until you really know--not until you feel it grow. Now I see it with my eyes. Now I've felt the glory rise. Now I know the reason why. Is it true? Yes it's true."
"One day I was walking and I met a little worm. All that worm could do was smile and I began to squirm. When I asked him why he smiled though all the world was grey, he smiled at me, real mild at me, and then I heard him say: Just keep on smiling! Life can be worthwhile if you keep on smiling; life smiles back at you. Now I find that every time my spirit starts to fail - when I meet a grizzly bear while going for the mail - or if a mad rhinoceros decides to come and stay - my thoughts return straight to that worm, and what I heard him say. Just keep on smiling! Life can be worthwhile if you keep on smiling; life smiles back at you."

ooh so after I posted the other week about having decided on our readings I went and changed my mind again! We are now having 'The Velveteen Rabbit', 'Marriage fufills the dreams and love that two people share' (not as soppy as it sounds! lol) and we WERE going to have the 'Lovely love story' (dinosaurs!) but then I discovered a gorgeous, sweet reading and I HAD to have it, so the third one is going to be 'Guess how much I love you'.
For those of you not familiar with it, this is it:
Little Nutbrown Hare, who was going to bed, held on tight to Big Nutbrown Hare's very long ears. He wanted to be sure that Big Nutbrown Hare was listening. "Guess how much I love you," he said. "Oh, I don't think I could guess that," said Big Nutbrown Hare. "This much," said Little Nutbrown Hare, stretching out his arms as wide as they could go. Big Nutbrown Hare had even longer arms. "But I love YOU this much," he said. Hmm, that is a lot, thought Little Nutbrown Hare. "I love you as high as I can reach," said Little Nutbrown Hare. "I love you as high as I can reach," said Big Nutbrown Hare. That is quite high, thought Little Nutbrown Hare. I wish I had arms like that. Then Little Nutbrown Hare had a good idea. He tumbled down and reached up the tree trunk with his feet. "I love you all the way up to my toes!" he said. "And I love you all the way up to your toes," said Big Nutbrown Hare, swinging him up over his head. "I love you as high as I can HOP!" laughed Little Nutbrown Hare, bouncing up and down. "But I love you as high as I can hop," smiled Big Nutbrown Hare - and he hopped so high that his ears touched the branches above. That's good hopping, thought Little Nutbrown Hare. I wish I could hop like that. "I love you all the way down the lane as far as the river," cried Little Nutbrown Hare. "I love you across the river and over the hills," said Big Nutbrown Hare. That's very far, thought Little Nutbrown Hare. He was almost too sleepy to think any more. Then he looked beyond the thorn bushes, out into the big dark night. Nothing could be further than the sky. "I love you right up to the MOON," he said, and closed his eyes. "Oh that's far," said Big Nutbrown Hare. "That is very, very far." Big Nutbrown Hare settled Little Nutbrown Hare into his bed of leaves. He leaned over and kissed him good night. Then he lay down close by and whispered with a smile, "I love you right up to the moon - AND BACK."
Its so cute :o)

My sister is reading a quote for us it is:
Love Love is a friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad. It settles for less than perfection, and makes allowances for human weakness. Love is content with the present. It hopes for the future and it doesn’t brood over the past. It’s the day-in and day-out chronicle of irritations, problems, compromises, small disappointments, big victories, and working toward common goals. If you have love in your life, it can make up for a great many things you lack. If you don’t have it, no matter what else there is, it is not enough, so search for it, ask God for it, and share it.

We finally decided on asking my god-daughter and god-son to read The Other Lovely Dinosaur and they are nearly as excited as me and h2b - we both loved it but really wanted it to be read by a duo and preferably not adult. We had also asked sil2b to do a reading and we must have looked at 100's and nothing was right for us. We thought we had decided on having her read "Better Together" by Jack Johnson as its one of our 2 songs (Wires by Athlete isn't quite suitable)
We have ended up making up our own reading: If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you. when mountains crumble to the sea, there would still be you and me.
From the very first moment I saw you, that's when I knew All the dreams I held in my heart, had suddenly come true
I don't get many things right the first time, In fact, I am told that a lot Now I know all the wrong turns, the stumbles and falls, brought me here
I think I've found my best friend, I think I dreamed you into life I'll be your hope, I'll be your love, be everything that you need
I would not leave you in times of trouble, we never could have come this far. I took the good times, I'll take the bad times, I take you just the way you are.
Love is the answer, at least for most of the questions in my heart Like "why are we here?" and "where do we go?" and "how come it's so hard?"
It's not always easy, sometimes life can be deceiving I'll tell you one thing, it's always better when we're together
You are first on my list, when everything around is gone i know You are first on my list, when everything is shown up for what it is
And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles, Thanks to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one.
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you. If the mountains should crumble to the sea, there would still be you and me.
Some of you may have noticed what we have done?????
