Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to have a secret wedding and keep the marriage secret indefinitely. I was engaged until recently but my parents weren't happy about my relationship and were pleased when the wedding was called off. I have since started seeing the man in question again but we haven't told anyone. I should add that we are both in our 40's and I have children from a previous marriage. I love this man with all my heart and am unhappy when we aren't together but as soon as I see him and he holds me, I feel like I'm where I belong, safe in his arms.
In terms of legalities, would this work? Could we carry on as we are, living relatively separate lives, but still being married? I know it doesn't seem to make sense but being his wife would make me so happy. I just want to know if it is possible, I haven't had much luck with research on the internet but someone might be able to give me an answer.

    Hi Dawn,

Its legal to keep a marriage a secret as long as you have witnesses for the actual ceremony itsself. But I wouldnt do this, imagine the hurt and upset your family and close friends would feel. Would you keep it a secret from the children too, as its a big ask for them to keep it a secret aswell?

Personally i would sit down and talk to you family and be honest. If you love the man and want to marry him its your choice wether its right or wrong or wether they like it or not, but at least youve been honest and have asked them for their support.

I think you woukd need to tell 2 close people who woukd not say a word to be witnesses but could just go to registry office and do it ( not sure if you can have strangers as witness) ?

Legally you can yes as long as you have witnesses. But I don't think I could keep such a massive important secret from my family and especially my kids..

MrsC2Be, your reply didn't sound judgemental at all. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm just looking for information at the minute, as to how I could make it work legally and practically. x
