Would love some opinions and advice on a few seating issues. We have invited 48 day guests - so we figured just 6 (could be 8)for top table which leaves 42 (or 40) to spread out in the room. The venue only offer round tables seating up to 10 people. If we have 10 per table this will only give us 4 tables of guests - I'm worried the room will look empty (They said room takes up to 100 guests) If we go for 6 or 7 per table this gives us more tables but each wont look full What do you think will look/feel better?
Also if we go for 6/7 per table - we have a couple of families with 5 people. Should we sit those 5 together and maybe add a 2 person couple to their table. I am torn between sitting whole family together or mixing it up so people can mix in with different guests. Would you just sit families together so that some tables will be just husband/wife + their own children?
Thanks for any opinions.

What I've done is to split up parents and their children where the children are old enough to not need parental supervision so the "adults" or my parent's generation are on one table together and then the "children" who are actually in their 20's and 30's are at a different table together.
The tables will look empty if you have I think any less than 7 people per table if they sit 10 normally so maybe go for tables of 7 or 8 guests each.
Could you maybe have a smaller "sweetheart table" for you and your new hubby? Then that is an extra table and the rest of your family could be at another.
Do the venue have smaller tables? Ours have given us the option of tables to seat 8 or 10 people so we've gone for a mixture of both as some tables will have 7 people, other tables 8, 9, 10 or 11.

I'd split ppl up, it's gets everyone talking to other ppl at the wedding that way... And 6-7 per table won't look empty once they have plates, glasses etc on there..it's a bit better with more room anyway, I always think 10 looks a bit cramped x

hey hun, wedding venues usually try and fit as many people on to a table as possible. so a table of max 10 would sit 7 or 8 comfortably without looking empty. so if you have 6 people on top table which leaves 42 people which can be divided into 6 tables of 7 people. x

We went to a wedding breakfast where here were only six of us on a table meant for ten (due to a bereavement) and to be honest it was a bit awkward to talk to people etc - we all ended up shifting round to sit closer together...I'd go for at least seven or eight personally.
Or ask to see how six would look laid out maybe, as they might have been tables to seat 10-12 rather than 8-10...
At most venues ten is quite a cramp, so think there are two standard sizes xx
The tables at my venue also sit ten, but it's a little bit cramped. If you can, I would suggest having 8 people on each table instead. As for mixing the tables, that depends on if your family and friends are quite chatty and sociable. I will be having some mixed tables with people we know will get along, and keeping the older family members with other family x

Our venue seat 10 a table and it is scary cramped.. We're going 8 at the most on a table.. I think mixing is ok, depending on the type of people xxx

Our venue gave us two table plans to choose from so we just have to decide where to put everyone.

i would sit 7/8 people at each table and have a gap in front of the top on each table so everyone is facing you then they can see you, that will fill up the room a little more with not having 10 people at each table, you could have 5 tables then :) x

That's a good idea mrs Lowe2b, I think we might look at that with ours xx

Thank you so much for all the replies. Some great ideas. When we go for menu tasting I will have a look at actual size of table - as you say 10 may really mean 8 comfy anyway. Brilliant idea to seat them with no one with their backs to top table - love that.
Thinking of making a children's table then I can mix up the couples better x

I thought about kids tables but my cousins were worried about the kids hyping each-other out and them having to get up all the time to discipline them.. Xxx

Our venue offers 6 foot tables which seats 10 or 5 foot tables which seats 8, but looking at them were having the 6 foot table seating 8, we have 80 quests so 10 tables of 8(including top table). They must cram as many people on a table as possible. Or people have to eat with their elbows on their knees!
