Whats the difference? Do I need both of them? Help!

You don't need to have both, you can just have an invitation. Save the dates are generally if you are planning your wedding a bit in advance and want to make sure as many people can attend as possible. Save the dates have the basic information like the date and possibly the location (especially if you are getting married a distance from your home) and don't require a response. Invitations are your formal request for people to attend with full information and require people to respond.

I'm having both and we are sending save the dates 18 months before as we getting married in a seaside town in August, so places will get booked up quickly with travel makers. Because we have a lot of family who we are inviting who aren't local it means this gives them a chance to book accomodation before it is all fully booked (which by the time we send out the invites it probably would be!) xxx

Hi,
I am having both, we are making our own. Have designed save the date just need to make them up. They will be going out roughly 12 months before the wedding and the invites out with Christmas cards for July wedding. May seem really early but people book holidays for the following yr when they have come back from this year, plus it gives me people a chance to save if travelling afar etc. Also have to remember you will need to give numbers to venue roughly 3 months ahead of date. xxx

I'm not doing Save the Dates, can't be bothered! I've told everyone important by email, text or in person anyway, so I'll just wait and do formal invitations in a couple of months time x

We did both. STD were little magnets from a website, cost us £10 for 100 of them so thought may as well as our wedding is peak holiday time! Obvs sent out formal invites too :)
