Oh no, I have not heard of this, so sad. Such a perfect size to get stuck though, always worth cutting them up. Same with sausages, if they are not cut in half they are perfect size to get stuck.

I'd seen on FB a load of stuff about always making sure you cut grapes up for little ones to eat as they are a choking hazard but never knew what it was linked to or where it stemmed from, but saw this morning the news about the little boy. Such a massive shame... RIP Jacob xx

Rip little man, such sad news. My kids love grapes but I don't always cut them up as they don't have a problem with them. Will definitely be cutting them up from now on x

He only lived 30 mins away from me, far too young

It's sooo sad- a grape is the perfect size to get stuck in wind pipe- I think all parents should learn basic aid for a kid choking- basic back blows can easily save lives
CommentAuthorBecci93
Not sure the exact details of it but the air ambulance was called so medical care should have been pretty quick on site so i don't know if the back blow didn't dislodge the grape because I'm fairly certain they airlifted him to the trauma unit too

It's so sad- I wasn't meaning in this particular case- I was just meaning in general that all parents should know basics - it's scary how quickly choking escalates and in this poor case it seemed way too quick with heartbreaking tragic consequences :(

Ahh I see; Yeah it's sad how easily it can happen especially in everyday situations.
Our area has seen more than its fair share of infant deaths recently in bad circumstances .. Last year a 3 year old was ran over and killed instantly .. Even to this day they haven't found the person who ran him over or the vehicle that did it

I saw the article online today, saying how he died following choking on food at PH, seriously hope the media do not portray it as PH being the reason why it happened. That's the feeling I got. It was nice the parents decided to switch the machine off as everyone was setting balloons off for him so that he was in peoples thoughts at the time.

I thought the same as well GF - hardly fair to bring PH's name into it, it certainly was not their fault!

I don't think anyone is blaming them :) I think it's just because the local incidents page in our area posted that the great north air ambulance had responded to an emergency at ph so think it's probably only in the article because of the detail in the local incident

It's such a sad story. No one would think twice about feeding their child a grape. At least I know for the future to always cut them up. If future lives are saved then the poor boy at least has a good legacy.
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

Apparently the PH staff responded really quickly and administered first aid. The grape must have been stuck too solidly to remove with first aid techniques.

Yeah I know it's heartbreaking :( hopefully his little life wasn't in vain and it makes everyone think more about little things like that .. I'd certainly never have thought eating a grape could kill :(
