    Hello,

I'm planning to go and get my engagement ring cleaned today. It's a Tiffany one, and I'm sure the website used to say that cleaning is free of charge and that they can do it anytime but their site is under construction at the moment so I can't find any information, does anyone know if I need to take anything with me apart from the ring itself?

    xx

    Hi Claire88.

As usual there's no simple answer. Like most purchases its likely that the more you pay for the cleaner the better it will perform. Ultrasonic cleaners are good but the really cheap ones don't work as well. Polishing cloths are useful but they won't clean behind the diamonds on in complicated settings

However you can usually make your rings look a lot better using the following simple process.

Fill a cereal or soup bowl with warm water.
Add a few drops of washing up liquid
Then add a couple of drops of household ammonia (available for hardware stores, Boots etc)
Leave it to soak for a few minutes
Take a soft toothbrush and GENTLY scrub the ring expecially around the stone setting. But be careful not to loosen the stone.
Rinse the ring thoroughly under the cold tap (PUT THE PLUG IN FIRST!)
Wrap the ring in kitchen paper or tissue nd allow it to dry for a few minutes
Polish it with a soft cloth

This only applies to rings with diamonds or similar stones. Never use this method for cleaning Opals or Pearls.

    Wow VIcky - That's a bit harsh!
As long as you don't do it too much it should be okay but I think the method I give above is less likely to damage your ring and will do just as good a job.
What worries me about boiling it is that it could loosen the settings for your diamonds over time.
