Just wondering has anyone had a religious blessing after a civil ceremony?
We are marrying in a country hotel but would love the religious aspect in the ceremony too. I read that you can have a religious blessing after the civil ceremony, looking for anyone who's had this before to tell me what happens?
Thanks x

I sang at one of these once. They had the legal ceremony in a registry office to satisfy the legal requirements, then had a religious blessing the next day in some gardens that was effectively their wedding. It included vows and exchange of rings. I knew someone else that did similarly. The civil ceremony was very small, they focussed on the religious element. The advantage is that anyone can conduct the ceremony, as there is no legal weighting to it, and it can be done anywhere.
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

Hi, we had a legal ceremony at a local venue then we went to our nearby cathedral for a religious blessing - it was so beautiful and meaningful for us even though we couldn't get married there. As Elinor says, you don't necessarily have to have it in a religious building either x

My parents did that, it is what it says on the tin a blessing of the marriage once it's been legalised

we wanted a priest or celebrant to come straight after our legal ceremony to come and do the blessing. Nice to see other people have done it though, wouldnt want to look wierd i would just like to have a religious part in there too :)

I am already legally married and we've never got to say our vows. So, the "wedding" we are planning, is actually a marriage blessing. We are having at the church, with everything included to make it look like a wedding, but we don't have the legal bits :)

Can you not have a religious service at the venue? That's what we are having. Xx

Hi Leanne, I thought you could only have a religious ceremony at a church rather than a venue like a hotel, where's your venue? xx

Hi Mrs c 2 be I am only seeing this, we are getting married in Northern Ireland, where I am from. As far as I am aware the venue needs a specific licence which ours has, we have submitted our forms to the register office and the minister has signed them to say he is marrying us. We then pick up or wedding licence from them 3 days before hand. Good to go lol xx

Yes mores- in England you can only be married and have regligios ceremony at a church- in Scotland the priest holds the licence so you can literally get married anywhere as long as you can find a priestn

My OHs cousin got married last year- they had a civil ceremony a day before and then the wedding blessing in a chapel- no one realised at the time that is was only a blessing!

I'm in Scotland and I asked a priest but he wouldn't. I'm confused now! Maybe I'll try another priest :)

Scottish law allows couples to marry anywhere, even outdoors, as long as the ceremony is conducted by a religious official, registrar or a non-religious Humanist Society Scotland celebrant - so G00gle says- therefore def try another xx
