Hi, sorry if there is already a discussion about this. I looked but couldn't see one.

My query is about rehearsal dinners. It has cropped up on a number of planning lists, but do you actually need one? And if so, who attends it?

    Thank you

The only thing I know about the hem is from American TV shows. As far as I can gather the wedding party, parents and a lot of guests go for a meal. There are some speeches from FOB etc wishing the couple well for the day etc. Unless I've missed something I don't think they are really necessary, unless you have lots of guests who don't know each other.

It's an american thing, not British. Traditionally the grooms parents pay for the rehearsal dinner in the states. It's not needed IMPO expensive and yet another thing to arrange.

Rehearsal dinners are very much an American thing, and not really done over here. If you're having a church wedding you will have a rehearsal a day or two before, and we did arrange a meal for those who were involved in the wedding rehearsal straight afterwards, but it was just a local restaurant and everyone paid for themselves. All we did was book a table, and there were no speeches or anything special, it was purely a social evening.

30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

We might go to the local pub after the church rehearsal as Elinor Claire says but only because its at 6pm so everyone may be hungry after. And even then it will only be the bridal party and everyone would pay for themselves. I wouldn't really call it a rehearsal dinner. Then again, the amount of stuff I spill down myself maybe I do need to practice eating! X

We went out on the Friday evening for dinner so everyone could meet and relax because the madness of the next day but everyone paid for themselves. It was nice to see our nearest and dearest and to give them their thank you gifts too as on the day we are everyone else's property!

As previously said I think it's an american thing. My sister is having a rehearsal 2 days before the real thing as she is having a church wedding, we're not having a rehearsal but planning to invite my close family and the bridal party for a wine tasting session and supper at our wedding venue the night before the wedding to say thank you to them all for all their help and chill out before the big day.

Our church rehearsal was a week or so before the big day but we didn't go out afterwards. The night before the wedding there was a family meal which was big because we had family over from abroad and in our culture there is always a big family meal the night before the wedding.

My twin brother did similar to us (their wedding was a few years before ours). They had the rehearsal the day before as some people were traveling that day, as we did, and then everyone at the rehearsal went off for dinner. My younger brother also had the rehearsal the night before to allow for people travelling, but we didn't do anything afterwards.

    Thank you for the replies.

That's made it a lot clearer and think I might just suggest to the wedding party about having a couple of drinks after the rehearsal.
