My H2B and I decided to get married abroad so that we wouldn't have the hassle of dealing with feuding families and paying for a reception to entertain our friends with.........yet now our friends are saying they want to celebrate with us and that we HAVE to have a reception.

I've priced up hiring the function room in our local pub (£40 for the night), a friend has offered to do the catering for £80.00 but that is just a basic buffet.........if i was to do it myself for around 75 people how much would it cost do you think, baring in mind we can buy party packs from the supermarkets for around £4 for 75 peices......

Also, there is the issue of a DJ, friends have offered but then said they'd need us to rent some of the equipment as they don't have it. I've done a quick price on line and can get a "professional" DJ for £80.00 for 5 hours.

Just not sure if I really want to have a reception or if I'm being bullied into it by what everyone else wants, yet I don't want to regret not doing anything......

So confused, really wish now that we hadn't told everyone what we were planning on doing and just eloped like we said we would :o(

If you want a party, have one.

    If you don't, don't. .

I'm in two minds.......rather go out for a meal, at least that way it wouldn't cost us an arm and a leg to entertain our friends......is that selfish???

If you aren't 100% on having a party, at the very least don't burden yourself with all the organisation. Book a hall, book caterers and book a DJ if you really feel like you have to have a party. If you aren't totally keen, then the last thing you want to do is get stressed organising it all in a DIY fashion.

I'd agree with Dove - go with what *you* want - but I do understand the pressure :-)

I'm already starting to get stressed out at the thought of having a reception.................I know everyone wants to celebrate with us and see my dress etc but deep down I don't think its really what either of us want, think we're contemplating it to keep everyone else happy.

I really would rather have a meal and lots of drinks :o)

Your stressing about a party and your not even married yet that should tell you everything you need to know. Tell the pushy friends that you are really happy that they want to celebrate but that a party is not what you really want ,suggest a meal or a little gathering at your house so you can all watch the video( if your having one) of your marriage ceremony or look at the photos you can do a few nibbles a few drinky poos in your own house sorted! if they are not happy with that tough! most of them will probably be disappointed but real friends don't hold you to ransom stay true to you but hey you might want a party so if so great ones can be done cheaply just don't do everything yourself! good luck hun x

I think you should just go for the meal. I dont think it sounds like u really want to have the party. Dont be bullies into anything you dont wanna go. I made that mistake and its caused a hell of alot of problems. Just enjoy your wedding for what it is, and that should be what you want, not what everyone else wants x
