I am only having 50 people to my ceremony at 3pm and then we are having a BBQ at about 5.30pm

The evening reception will start at about 7.30pm and we want to do just drinks and dancing. Its after tea time and I don't see why people should be fed at a massive extra cost. Hardly anyone will arrive until after 8pm anyway and then no one will eat it as it is too late.

Am I being mean? I thought it was a good idea to keep costs down but someone has said people will expect food. I am going to make it quite clear on the evening invites its drinks and dancing only.

    Advice please?

I'm providing food to soak up alcohol. Also I'm usually hungry at about ten pm...

i think people generally expect food at a wedding ,but if you can think of a good way to let them know food wont be served then they wont be dissapointed. maybe write a poem and put it wth the invites, asking them to join you for just drinks and a boogey? x

That might be a good idea! Make a poem so its all light hearted. I am just at pains to pay for food that hardly anyone eats. I have been to weddings before where it is all wasted.
    Thanks Jelly tot!

As you are having a bbq why not just put out what is left ....cold meat, salad, bread rolls etc

Oh Lalabunni! That could work also! Think I might speak to the venue and see what they think. Although when I first spoke to them they were really keen on the no food later as they say it always gets ignored.

i went to a wedding where they did just this and it worked really well people loved the cold "platters" and that way you not paying for any extra ...maybe a little more salad.....and the food all gets used up

some people automatically expect food to be there so they wont eat in advance, maybe a basic buffet could be in order ,in case anyone gets peckish, and as dove says,to soak up the alcohol,,everyone gets the munchies when they drink lol

Just had a thought. Will less people actually come to the reception if they are not getting food? I am in a right old panic now! Seemed like a good idea at the time but now I am doubting it. Eeeeek!

nicolaspeak: that's exactly what we're doing, although the venue want to charge us 100% of guests, i'm sure some will eat beforehand though.

no not at all! but then if people don't want to come just because they aren't getting a free meal then balls to them, they don't deserve to be part of your special day x

Alsbetty - That would be my usual thought but I am feeling a bit emotional and panicy today. Must be PMT! Not a good time to be thinking about all this I think :-)

Lisa77 we have a wedding on the 9th april, it's one of our friends and we r staying the nite, it's the place we are thinking about for the reception so were gona see how it's all laid out and how the staff and things are, then talk to them the next day if all goes well... they said it was only £350 for the hall hire and £4 per person for the buffet so it's alot of money as they don't allow outside catering... i'll put pics up now.. :)

we are having a buffet also at about 5ish and evening guests are coming from 7.30 onwards and we have decided to put out crisps nutsand maybe some crudites and a few dips probably no more than £20 worth just so there is a little something to ease the munchies after all the dancing i intend to do :) also we are thinking about putting out old school sweeties and things like cornflake cakes. i wouln't worry about people not turning up because a buffet isn't there as most people i know eat before an evening reception and we have also worded our invites to the evening guests to come to our "Party" that celebrates our wedding and to most people that means booze and dancing but that could also vary depending on the people we are as we all have varying tastes and i'm sure all of our opinions vary as to what makes a great night out.xx

Alibum - Maybe the crisps and snacks thing is a good idea just to ward off the munchies and would be cheap too! I like the wording "Party" that might really help to ge tthe message across.
Alsbetty - Wish I could have a bath and chill but I am at work :-( But H2B is taking me to see cirque du soleil tonight so that is something to look forward to!
