Hi, I'm Becky. I got engaged on Christmas Eve and although the wedding a few years away, I'm hoping to start planning / get things moving like booking venues etc as early as possible.

Congratulations! This forum is great lots of help. You need to start with your budget and a guest list to get an idea of how many people you are having and how much you can afford to spend on venue/food.

Hi Becky. Congratulations on your engagement!
I got (officially) engaged 2 days before Christmas. Lovely time of year for it :)
Its probably been said on here a thousand times, but I would start by getting an idea of your budget. This will stop you going off and finding venues etc that you fall in love with, but may be out of the ball park! Also, browse the internet and the forum, and get an idea of colours and themes you may like, and you'll find it all starts coming together.
I found it very handy to use a spreadsheet. I put my venues in there (they all jumble into one if you look at too many!). There are some ready made spreadsheets online which include a list of all the 'traditional' elements of a wedding, where you can input estimated costs etc, and keep a track of things a bit easier.
But first thing is first - take it easy, and enjoy being engaged for a bit :)

Congrats on your engagement! Our first thoughts were - we want an intimate ceremony for only close friends and family - we want to get married this year and we wanted to concentrate more on the honeymoon than the wedding itself. We worked out a rough budget and took it from there. Initially we thought we would have the ceremony at the reception venue then when we found out it would cost over £300 more for the registrar to go to the venue we decided to go to the registry office instead. Budget is driving a lot of our decisions. Once you decide that ,pick a venue and a rough timescale - everything else starts springing into action. And this site is amazing for help and idea's. Also remember that many venues take bookings a few years in advance so it's never too early to start. Best of luck and enjoy the planning process :-) xx

Hello Rebecca, congratulations, and what a wonderful day to get engaged. Agree with the others, work out a budget, bearing in mind that you've got a couple of years to save, but also that unexpected expenses can come along. Venue comes next, along with church if you're having one, so that you can set a date. You can't start booking other things until you have your date. Don't commit to more than you have to at this stage though; booking a venue is a good idea as popular ones do book up early, but you may find that your ideas change as time goes on. Eighteen months is far enough in advance to start committing to most things, so use the next few months to dream and work out what you would really love.
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.
I can promise you all the lovely ladies on here will be a massive help!!
And congratulations on getting engaged!!!! X

Welcome Becky! and congratulations on the engagement :)
I agree with the others, set a budget first. I got engaged New Year's Eve - like you I wanted to get a few things booked, so I/we have sorted the budget, venue, photographer and the registrar. I think most other things kind of fall into place once these are booked, you can take your time looking and just enjoy the whole process.

see With alot of time, I kinda went the other way about worked out what we wanted and how many people and how much it would cost then worked out how much we needed to save to have it. We got engaged dec11 getting married july15.
I always knew I did not want a church and prefered the idea of a all in one venue in the country. Love my venue, and to be able to afford it we decided to have it on a weekday to save over 3G.
