I know the feeling hon, we were supposed to have started saving by now, but nothing has been put aside :/
And next month it's the MOT and the month after it's tax!
£7000 is a lot of money to save in such a short time, do you think you'll make it? Maybe try a "penny jar", we've got one that we drop any spare change into, and it does save us a little bit every week xx

aww hun it is really hard we decided we wanted to get married no matter what so we just cut back on certain things so that it became a possibility to marry sooner rather than later we are spending maybe around 3and a half thousand all in and while we have had to say no to some nights out etc we arent skrimping and stressing either just prioritise what the most important things are and work to that hun xxxx

you can save money on things like invites and favours and flowers and table decs all things you get for a lot less on the bay of e for example or if you are good that way you could make them yourself in the begining i had provisionaly booked a few things that i changed after some thought and becky is right people will understand and a gift that you have made and put thought into is much better than anything you can buy xxxxx oh another thing we did start selling off all the stuff you have tucked away that you and h2b dont use and get in on the bay of e you will be suprised how much it mounts up to we did that and it paid for an awful lot of our stuff xxx

I have told my family and friends that we are saving up so they don't really ask us to do anything and for christmas I have told my mum to let people know that we cannot afford to spend so much this year so people don't sbuy me anything and i will just buy for my son. No takeaways, taking food to work, no nights out unless it is really important like a wedding or something. My partner is working all the overtime he can get too so hopefully we should have about 3 and half grand by May.

Deffo cutting backs on takeaway meals, not just for money need to lose 7 stone, I spent £28 on chinese saturday night just because we thought oh its saturday its payday lets have a treat, my HTB could of cooked the same and would of cost maybe £10, its just you think you have to sit in and make loads of sacrafices your only treat is a takeaway lol, Im really wanting to drop a bridesmaid and not have any ushers only one best man also but my HTB says the lads will be gutted if there not ushers, his best mate made all the ushers pay for the hire of their suit but I just cant do that

If you are getting married in a church you'll need ushers and it's quite popular to ask them to hire themselves or, do what I'm doing, make them all wear black suits, most men own a black suit, and just hire/make them waistcoats and ties/cravats! Or they could just wear the same colour suits and not have waistcoats just matching ties!!! (The vicar's tend to like ushers there!)

Bm's dresses are usually cheaper in winter time and you could always go for short ones that are cheaper as they aren't classed as bm dresses! Hope that helps!

i think this all the time how can we save 12 grand in less then a year... i made my invites day and evening (and thats 80 for the day and another 200 for the evening) (costing about 45 in total) as well as order of services (80)
i made the favouur boxes (costing about a fiver) and got 100 favour bags off ebay for like 1.99
i made my flowers (my bouquet and 6 bridesmaids bouquets for less then 100 pound in total
i made the cake boxes for about 8 pound.
the bridesmaids are buying their own dresses (40 pound they would of more and likely spent more then that on a wedding gift) so thats their gift to us) ushers as we have 4 are buying their own suits again as our gift. my mum is helping with a few hundred, but thats all, and the hubby to be husband parents are not helping.
The centre pieces have cost me less then 4 pound with the fishbowls and flowers lights and waterbeads.
I made the table names myself cost me a few pounds.
i also got disposible cameras cheap on ebay :)
my tiara and necklace was in a sale :)
bubbles for the tables i brought from the pound shop
my shoes i got from a shop in a sale and got for less then 20 pounds
only booked a photographer up till the speeches (was less then half the price for all day)
i have photographer friends who will be taking pics through out the night
the cars a taxi firm does wedding cars vintage for half the price i was being quoted by wedding car firms
i have a friend who is doing her master in documentry filming , filming thr day for free as present
and also a friend who owns a cake shop so she is making the cake for us for our wedding present
it all mounts up to some huge savings

best things to save money is find out what your friends can help with not money, but skill wise :) xx

My mum is also putting away a pound a day for our wedding gift and when you think from the time she started saving to the time of the wedding it will be over £800 it all adds up. Just had a bit of a wobble, we have 6 months to go and need £1,930 and we have £1,000! That includes everything so it's not so bad but after rent, bills and petrol we have about £300 between us to last the month which I know is more than some but my car needs a new tyre £40, my MOT is due next month £50 then the car tax in December £120!

I've just done a breakdown of what needs to be paid for in what month and we can put about £200 a month away after the car stuff which should be enough but got a bit panicked. Theres Christmas coming up as well! Phew...and breathe! Lol.xx

im in the same situation we need to save just over 5000 and at the moment it not happening i worked out that i should have at least £100 left every month to put into the wedding fund but at the end of the month it isnt there and im not spending on anything extra!! and now i have 3 birthdays this month at least 2 next month plus an anniversary and then christmas!! It really not happening!!! and i worked out we need to save at least 100 each oper month to be able to pay it all by beginning of august 2013!!! everyone says that it will all work out but it isnt and tha is for the bare minimum!! unless i was to be cooking right up to the ceremony and that all we have!! we cant cut back on anything else!!!

i have looked into getting married abroad but my grandparent wouldnt be able to come (which wouldnt be fair as they are contributing a little to the wedding plus they bought me my dress) and my parents couldnt afford to come!!

i just feel at the moment like saying screw it all!! but i know my nan would be disappointed as she is already saying she might not be here if we delay lots and that she will never see great grandkids (cant have kids till married!!)

sorry to thread steal and rant but im about ready to give up too!!!!

Well, even though it doesn't practically help it's a comfort that people are in the same boat-if you know what I mean. I think it's time for even more belt tightening and fingers crossed! Thing is my wedding isn't even big budget (only £2,500) and we've paid for some stuff and it's in a special wedding account and I seem to be missing about £400! I'm sure that I must have withdrawn too much at some stage and not put it back in as I'm the only one with access to the account. H2b NOT good with money!

Aah well, keep calm and carry on as the saying goes. Good luck Krazykitty!xx

I know how you feel girls. We started delivering catalogues to raise extra money & now we are delivering the parcels too. We has £470 go in the bank on Friday which we werent expecting we thought it would be about £320. So as soon as I saw it I rang travel agents and paid a lump sum off. Will bs gettin paid from them every two weeks now so will be paying around £200+ every fortnight.
I mean it's tedious and I would rather be spending the few hrs it takes chilling with h2b b4 his night shifts but as he keeps pointing out when we get married & don't need to do this we can spend the rest of our lives chilling lol.

Went to see possible venue again last night & put our names down provisionally. Then one of the ladies we were chatting to the last time we went remembered us & said we can book in her name & get the members discount. So a bonus saving there!

Look at ways of saving money. If there are things you haven't yet booked, think about how you can reduce your costs eg make your own stationary and invites, don't bother with decorations and favours, if you haven't bought BM dresses then ask iuf they'd buy their own instead of getting you a gift, etc.

Then look at your outgoings. Are any insurance policies/contracts (like mobile phone/gas/electric) coming up for renewal any time so? If so, shop around; you can save hundreds by switching companies. If you have non-essential things like Sky, and can cancel without paying a charge, then cancel. Cut back on all non-essentials: that means things like takeaways, the pub, nights out, the cinema, etc. Look at what you spend on things like clothes, and again, cut back. Look at your weekly food shop, and switch to cheaper alternatives where possible, and plan ahead; the WORST thing to do when food shopping is to not have a p[lan of meals for that week, I promise you you'll overspend and buy things you don't need that might get wasted. Shop for toiletries and cleaning products in places like Wilkinson's/Poundland/Savers etc. As far as birthdays and Christmas goes, tell people you're strapped for cash this year. With friends, maybe do a secret santa with a max spend of £10; with family, say you really can't afford gifts and that you hope they understand, and that you aren't expecting anything from them. Anyone with any common sense will understand.

Once you've done all this, think about how much you can realistically save, and factor in a contingency fund. The WORST thing to do when saving/setting a target is to think about what you can save provided nothing else comes up; you need to factor in emergencies/unexpected expenditure to get a true idea of what is doable. If once you've worked all this out you are still not going to have enough, then you might need to consider either scaling back, or else postponing; it's fine to say you need to save £7k, but if you can't you can't, and the last thing you want to do is start married life in debt.

i started a savings account with in 2 weeks of getting engaged we both put money into it and that come straight out of the bank as soon as wages go in so that way i know that money i have left is mine ...
i saved for the Bm`s dress by putting away any £1 or £2 coins i had at the end of the week .... them bought dresses for £35 in debs ... you dont have to have dresses that cost 3 figures .. we found side tiaras on line for just £4.99 each ( happy to pass on link )
i have made loads ( see my diary thread )

Saving for the wedding and the house, H2B doesn't have a job even though he's applying for everything. I can't work anymore as i'm a student, and study all week and work all weekend. getting things for as little as we can and some family members helping with the wedding.. still wondering how we're going to do it.

I know theres people in jobs who just phone in sick all the time when they arnt and don't care about doing it the best they can when there are poeple out there who would love to have the job.

Thinking of making my own cake as i bake all the time and I've never messed up, just worrying with something as important as the wedding cake. H2B seems to think its the best idea, and he's not a fan of cake but likes one i make, so could do a tier of that for him so he can enjoy it too. That would save some money. He's great on computers so making the invitations and place cards. got my dress £1000 off :) so far finding things cheap enough but we cant find a decent priced photographer or cars. Now he's talking about staying in the hotel we're getting married in the night before so we'd only need a car for me, I don't mind if he wants to would save some money.

Personally, I really don't think wedding cars are at all essential. We're not having them, and it isn't because we can't afford them, it's just that I'd sooner spend £500 elsewhere eg putting more money behind the bar. I think they're VERY expensive for what they are, and personally, I don't think they contribute much, especially arriving as everyone will be inside waiting anyway. If you're struggling to save, you really need to think about what is essential, and what is: my essentials would be things like the venue, food and drinks; nice as things like cars are, they're not essential, and the reason that tradition came about was because a few years ago, a lot of people didn't have cars, so it was a purely practical thing.

Look into luxury cab companies; a couple we know use them all the time for airport transfers. They cost about 50% more than a normal mini-cab, and use only large, luxury cars like Mercs, and the drivers are dressed smartly or in uniform (waistcoat and cap, that kind of thing). That way you can still arrive in comfort, but at a fraction of the cost.

As far as photographers go, see if there's any room for negotiation eg some may agree to a lower price if you want the images on a disc and then print them yourself. Also think about how long you need them for, and perhaps book a professional just for the ceremony and formal shots, then get friends and family to take photos during the wedding breakfast and reception. Or get in touch with local colleges and see if you can find a student: just be aware of the risks.

ive been worried recently about money.
we only started saving up about a month ago and we have just under £1k... BUT thats because i put nearly allll my student loan in.
were quite lucky in the respect that my parents are paying for the evening reception, and h2b's mum is doing the cake so thats the biggest thing paid off straight away by mum and dad and saving money on cake.

were hoping to have £5k to pay for decorations, flowers, dresses, bm dresses, accessories, cars photographer, dj/band... grooms outfit and best man (ushers can pay for themselves...) blinking heck this list is never ending :( xx

Lol MrsPite, pay as you go might just be a good idea!

We're doing ok, we've cut back on non essentials and do still have things like Sky (basic package) because they'd charge a penalty for coming out. As a mortgage advisor I do customers budgets every day so I'm quite good at shopping around for the best utilities etc.

We've been lucky to have a lot of help too. Nan paid for the reception venue, mum paying for the car, uncle making the cake, aunty is a professional photographer (score!), borrowed my wedding dress! Favours for 130 people less than £7 (bay of e!), dad paying for half of the honeymoon.

It's tough though but the end result will be worth it! xx

i have managed to sort out the table decs and centrepieces really cheap but it the big things like photographer and venue that are getting us down! Our venue does a package that is £3500 which includes the photographer we want but then we have to pay extra for the album or the disk plus the first dance etc (although am debating if that needed) but do i pay the extra £1000 for the photographer or do i go with his package which is about 400 cheaper (the package at venue includes other things too) aaaargh!!! Am getting srtessed just thinking about it!! :( my problem is the money comes in and then goes straight back out again and the money i should have left over isnt there because it needs to go straight back out to pay the bills!! never ending circle!!

    still positive thinking!!! lol

ooh and i am doing the invitations myself and we have his aunty sorting out our flowers so they will be cost price but it just everything else!!

thanks barbie86 great post up there. I want a car for me and my dad, but he is a taxi driver and said he has a few friends who have mercs ect so might go for that, just give them a normal taxi fair then as they wouldn't charge me anything but always nice to pay a bit for petrol, not a big deal since my venue will be close by. checked out a venue yesterday near where I live and think we are going for that, centrepieces are included free and are lovely so that would be great!! Used the H2B skills on spreadsheets to make one on our budget, and putting the prices in on what we pay can work out wheat we saved ect all by itself so I don't have to get confused by adding everything anymore :)
