I would just like to highlight my personal experience with you as I am so angry at the moment. In 2007 I split with a long term ex partner who had my bank card. I rang the bank to cancel the card in the Oct. 6 months later in April 2008 they let a transaction go out of my account using the cancelled card. This had made me overdrawn as it wasn't a main account that I used. When I went into the branch to close down the account they told me that I couldn't as I owed them £10 that it had taken me overdrawn. Needless to say I didn't pay it as the lady could see on the screen what had happened and that the bank should not have let the payment leave my account in the first place. They sent it to the fraud squad who paid the money back into my account.

After moving house a few months later I had a debt collection letter through for nearly £500! After investigation I found out it was thebank who had done this after charging me for being overdrawn. There had been a mistake with the fraud squad so it hadn't been sorted. (not my problem) Needless to say I got told sorry it will be sorted.

A year later I got another debt collection letter through. Same thing again! I went to the CAB as I was getting really hacked off with it all. They said delt with the BANK and the BANK even confirmed with them that it had been sorted.

Well blow me! I've just had another debt collection letter through the door! I've just blown my top and rang the Financial Ombudsman Service. If anyone has an account with the BANK I would seriously consider just how safe your money is with them. They couldn't look after my account when it had no active card on the account!

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JO I HAVE CHANGED THE NAME OF THE BANK YOU WERE WITH TO PROTECT YOU

They had confirmed with the CAB that it had been sorted so I'm just sick of it now. I've checked out my legal rights about bailiffs coming around and by all accounts they can't come in without a court order so I'm going to let them carry on being muppets. They can't take away my worldly possessions so stuff them. Its just so maddening how they can get away with it all the time and us little people have to suffer for it. If I needed any credit to pay for the wedding I wouldn't be able to get it now because of them.

I think its all down to personal experience but I find it infuriating that they can let money go out of an account when the card has been cancelled 6 months prior. I know there is a lot of card fraud about but this was a cancelled card so surely it should have set off something in their security rather than let the transaction go through. They just don't seem to know what they are doing and they can't even sort out the problem when they know about it.

hi ladies can i just point out here, that we are on a open forum so advertising what bank your with is not a good idea, hackers find all sorts of ways to gain entry to accounts.i think this discussion while valid in its warnings should have its title changed

I had nothing but problem after problem with tsb they are a total nightmare ! i would do as b2nicola says and check your credit history i had a similar issue with a phone company paid the debit off over 2 years ago and got a letter a couple of months ago for a collection agency saying i now owed them the money ! It turns our the company just keep selling the debit on even after you have paid it cos some soft idots would carry on paying the differnt companies. You can get it deleted off your credit history cos thats what i had to do in the end.

Rich had £500 taken out of his bank account by mistake by thinking he was to pay for someone else's direct debit (someone we don't know at all who lives in Cornwall somewhere - us living in County Durham) Even though they knew this was their mistake it took them 8 weeks to rectify it. He went away 4 weeks ago with his mates to find out that he had over £600 taken out of his bank fraudulently (he only found this out once he reached Birmingham and had to pay for things) and they still haven't put the money back. I'm so angry they shut all his accounts we couldn't transfer any money out of his savings into our joint account and we were left very short and had to borrow money off his parents which obv we need to pay back! They are so annoying!
Sorry rant over - its just so frustrating and even more so when other people are going through the same thing!

Yet didn't stop it when I spent 500 in a French supermarket 2 weeks ago and didn't tell them I was going to France .... Idiots the lot of them.... I hate banks grrrrr

Bluerinse I had the same problems with Barclays when I changed my job and started working all over the place. What happens is the system takes an average of what you usually spend on your card and if it picks up high volumes of payments or unusual transactions like all over the UK then it puts a block on it. You have to ring them up to get it taken off again. Once it gets used to your new spending habits it will stop. Its just to safeguard you from fraud although its annoying when your in a shop and it gets refussed.

I think the Fo will kick their ass as the evidence is stacked up against them. I've been told that I could claim against them so I might look into it. I'm just not sure if it is worth all the hassle. Will see what the h2b thinks about it. Half of me can't be bothered and the other half thinks they make so much money out of us and then treat us the way they do so I should.

hi, i work for a (gulp) bank in card services. just to make you aware (and i can only advise how we deal with things), if you advised us you were going overseas it makes no difference to the fraud detection system. the reason for this is, if your card is cloned, which can happen without your knowledge, then huge spending comes out of your account and you are unaware whilst on your jollies and the fraud system doesnt flag it up cos youve told em you were on hols then you'd be pretty annoyed it hadnt picked it up. its far better to be subject to security checks to ascertain its a genuine transaction than to have fraud. if your on your hols still then your card would have to be stopped and you may then be left without a card to use which can ruin your hol. the best thing to do when overseas is to ensure you have other forms of payment and not to rely on just 1 card. there are many reasons why cards are declined/referred and its there to protect the customer as well as the bank. fraud detection systems save millions each year in fraud. also most referred transactions are seen to be declined only because the retailer cba to ring to gain authorisation. the only time we will decline is mostly wrong card info entered by retailer or customer. the fraud detection system, even if its got used to your new pattern of spend is not excluded from security checks. fraud patterns changes on a daily basis and the fraud system also takes many other spending into consideration. its not often declines are due to insufficient funds. with regards to the bank you're referring to (not my employee) and your credit rating, as they have made the mistake, they have to sort out the issue's re experian. the correct way is to complain to the bank, they have 8 weeks i think it is (not my dept so only guessing) to sort it out for you, they have to report your complaint to fsa i think it is who audit your complaint. the financial ombudsman will intervene once you've gone through the correct chanels with the bank. sometimes tho they will intervene to tell the bank youve complained to them which should make them get their bum into gear. banks are not all bad ya know but it is a business and if funds are borrowed without asking then fee's are usually incurred. right, ill just stand in front of the firing squad now lol. hope ive not bamboozled too much and hope it makes sense but bear in mind i can only advise how we deal with things x

I just wish my bank had gone through the security so I wouldn't be in this mess. They let a transaction go out on a CANCELLED card! I would rather have my card decline all the time than allow someone to use my account.
