Hi ladies, just wondering if you think a premium economy upgrade is worth it.

When we booked our honeymoon we didn't really know how our finances etc would be so we compromised and are going for 10 nights in economy rather than 14 or 7 or in premium economy. I am managing ok with finances and paying my share off.
Now my H2B has received an award "a bug bounty" from a famous social networking site and this would cover the cost of an upgrade to premium economy. He is saying he will just spend it on the wedding as we had an agreement that we couldnt afford it and cant see my point of view.

We will be going on the Dreamliner (hopefully minus any technical issues) and in economy the configuration is 3/3/3 where as premium is 2/3/2 so would get seats just us to. P Economy on this route gets very good reviews on TA with regards food and not having to pay extra for drinks which you do in economy.

    What would you guys do?

Upgrade upgrade upgrade !!!!!! As long as there's nothing more important such as a payment that could be made that would have put you into an overdraft or something but now won't with this bonus :-) if you get what I mean lol xxx

we are off to USA on the Dreamliner and are going premium I've never flown premium so looking forward to it and we have 2 and then 2 in front as my son and gf are coming with us. It looks so lovely.....Also we get the use of the 1st class lounge in Gatwick so I'm pleased that we upgraded...

Yes its long haul to Dom Rep. We are both fine for money to cover everything we need to pay for, for the wedding. He just cant see my POV - i said its like free extra money so why not splash out and spend it on something splurgy but at the moment I am not winning. I will in the end im sure ;)
I won over the taxi transfer from the airport!

Definitely upgrade! It is a long flight (I went in 2010, obviously not on the dreamliner though) and the most annoying thing sitting in a 3 is that the 3rd person will need out at some point as well as both you and your hubby, so depending on where you are sat, you will either have a stranger climbing over you or you will be climbing over a stranger...not fun!

Are you staying in Punta Cana? The designer shopping mall is great, you should go there if you can.

Yes staying in Punta Cana- great I shall add it to our to do list :) Thanks.

I know what the long flight is like as we did Cuba and did one leg in PE on the way back but on those planes we were lucky to get a 2 in the 2/3/2 formation.
I have also done Australia in both economy and part of the way in Business so I have a bit of a taste for the high life haha. But mainly I dont want to be sat next to a random person on the way to my honeymoon or to worry about taking extra cash to pay for drinks.

I think you've nailed it on the head when you say "mainly I dont want to be sat next to a random person on the way to my honeymoon".

I say definitely upgrade. This isn't just a "holiday" it's a once in a lifetime occurance (unless you're in the habit of marrying multiple times just for the honeymoon LOL which i'm certain you're not). Start off married life with a bit of luxury I say. I can see why he wants to be sensible but i'm like you. I'd feel like "well its money we wouldn't have had anyway so lets just splurge and treat ourselves".

I never normally agree with one partner bossing the other about (partnerships are supposed to be equal) but I think this is a case where i'd make an exception! Crack that whip and get him told! lol

What else is on your list?
I didn't particularly like going out of the resort, drivers over there are crazy - we went out in a taxi once, buggies/quads once and a safari type open-backed vehicle once and each time I was very anxious!

Although the locals seem friendly, I got the impression that we weren't welcome and in any smaller shops (ie; not malls) the people were very pushy. So I would stick to excursions planned by reps/the resort and only larger malls for shopping. Don't get me wrong, I loved the trip, there were just bits of it I felt uneasy.

And it sounds like you have made your mind up about upgrading, you will (hopefully) only ever have 1 honeymoon so if you can, make it as enjoyable as possible :o)

We are like you and like to stay in the resort and chill using the facilities. I fancied zip lining and I think the hotel has a free shuttle to the malls.

I like your POV VintageChic - maybe Ill use your words to try to persuade him haha :)

    1. Long haul flight upgrade every time .... Look at the cost per hour of travel rather than as a whole
    2. Premium gets you lounge access but not to first class or business lounge .
    3. Depends who you fly with as to whether you have to pay for drinks in economy ( some airlines give free soft drinks but you pay for alcohol)

we booked premium economy when we booked the holiday its our one and only holiday with out the kids so making the most of it.
we didn't really want to sit next to some stranger on our honeymoon and you get 4 course meal and drinks included, extra leg room, and bigger baggage allowance so we thought it was well worth it.

We normally travel premium unless its a short flight ...... Having said that out recent 2 flights to get to vegas ( Jamaica - Miami - vegas ) Were business and first class seats . I'm travelling back to uk in business ( although on this flight there are no first class seats so business is the best )

If you can afford it and it's long haul it might be worth it. Hubby and I got a free upgrade to premium on the way out because we were on honeymoon plus free champagne and other alcohol which unit3d usually charge for xx

upgrade.. we're going Premium to Barbados in a few weeks... have flown economy before on a long haul and, whereas it was fine, the extra room is definitely something to enjoy... last time we went to the States, because V-gin hadn't put us all together (and they said they had on our paperwork) they upgraded us to 1st class - there and back :)... mind I also think that they can resell PE easier at the gate - so it was probably a win win situation for them.
