Hi all; being newly engaged (12th May 2013) we are looking at possible wedding ideas and venues. I have found a few in the UK which look great but I also like the idea of having a wedding abroad but my fiance is not to sure as he is worried about people being able to come. The way I'm looking at is if we do decide to have a wedding abroad then we get a 2 in 1 kind of thing as we could have our honeymoon in the same location.

He has a large family; 3 brothers, 3 sisters, his mum, his stepdad, his aunts/uncles/cousins and of course the family of his siblings e.t.c. One of his brother's is married with 3 kids and one of his sisters is also married with two kids. My main family consists of four so it wouldn't really affect me. We then have friends to invite as everyone does.

Obviously it is just an idea at the moment but how do I assure him that it could be a good idea? We will most likely have our wedding in 2015 so plently of time for people to save up and go on holiday/wedding?

Also does anyone have any good recommendations or suggestions on where to go or what to look more into?

    Many Thanks :)

    Welcome to the site Jade.

We got married abroad - in Vegas - and then had a blessing in our local park, conducted by a friend of ours, which close friends and family came to, and then a reception after that. Is that something that could work for you?

We got engaged in 2005 and somehow a few years went by and we'd still not set a date, mainly because of cost. One day someone suggested marrying abroad and I looked into it, and couldn't believe how much cheaper it worked out than doing it here. So we are getting married in Lindos (Rhodes), Greece in June next year. We are doing the same as brilly and having a reception back here (about a month later) so that everyone else can come to that (I have a massive family, there’s no way we could have afforded for them all to come). Close family and a few friends are coming, I would have been gutted if any of them couldn’t come but we started planning with nearly 2 years to go so they all had quite a bit of notice so luckily they are all able to come. I’m also thinking of having a videographer and playing that at the UK reception but if not then we will just have a slideshow of the pictures xx

Oh and I would firstly decide where you want to get married and then have a look online for reviews etc - we nearly booked our wedding through Thomson/Thomas Cook or somewhere like that but I've read a few bad reviews on how they're quite bad at the wedding side of things and only really focus on the holiday - which I guess you can understand, given that they are a holiday company.

We wanted to marry in Rhodes as that was where we had our first holiday just the two of us, and then a friend of a friend recommended a wedding planner based out there so we have booked our wedding through them and doing the holiday bit separately. So glad we booked with them as they have been fantastic so far and couldn't be more helpful.

Thanks Rachymoo for the advice; I've heard that those companies aren't great too for the wedding side anyway. Just need to look around and find one that we both like so I can persuade him ;) Oh and thanks for Sarah for the congrats :)

    Hi Jade,

    Congratulations!!!

We are getting married in May 2014 in Cyprus on the beach, I can not wait! We have approximately 55 guests travelling out with us, We were surprised with how many people decided to join us. We decided to get married abroad as my H2B also has a huge family and I have a small one, Anyway turned out most of his huge family are still coming and my small family are dropping out ha! Typical!
I originally booked my holiday / wedding with a Tour Op and they completely let me down so had to cancel the wedding part and urgently find a new venue. Luckily we found a great wedding planner who is looking after us! My advice is if you do go to Cyprus or Greece to organise the wedding yourself as its so easy and much more reliable!

    Happy Planning!! xxx

H2B's cousin had a registry office wedding so all the family could come and then went and had a blessing on a beach in Spain to which a lot of her family went and spent the first week of their honeymoon with them, and then they had another week out there just them and came back and had a big party for the people that couldn't go.. She wore her wedding dress for the blessing and just a nice maxi dress for the reg office and wore her wedding dress again for the party xxx

My H2B and I are getting married in Malta, originally we had decided on Cyprus and for several reasons some including costs, we changed to Malta, we had a few issues as Maltese Government will not send the date til 6 weeks before we fly which is majorly weird, but means we have booked ourselves there for a week and fam will come too... and then have a separate honeymoon! I have a huge family and looked at both getting married here and abroad, and to get married abroad just had so many more positives like weather, something different, away from home, will stop some family arguing, most of the family will be staying in the same hotel, so always together and no one is missing out! These are just a few reasons... but I would look around your areas, and also look at abroad, pick your favourites for both, then discuss as a couple which one would suit you best...

I was surprised to hear how many of my family have booked onto the holiday, mainly because we warned everyone to save up. Talk to your closest family and friends also and see what their opinion is... then reflect on that also. But just remember it is your day..
    hope this helps x

    Hiya Jade,

    Congrats on your engagement!!

Im getting married in Kefalonia next May. We chose it because it was less commercialised than a lot of places and would be guaranteed the weather!! The cost is literally half what we would spend in England, on a basic wedding, we have everything included over there (fireworks, coach for guests, open bar even!!) and have NOT gone through a tour operator.
I did some reseach and found a fab wedding planner (shes Irish, so no language barriers!) and everything is so under control, I am not stressed in the slightest! (maybe closer to the time I will be!!)

I have a small family and he has a large one, but Ive invited more friends, we are expecting about 40 people. And having a "reception" when we get home.

I would vote abroad everytime- people might say your pinning the costs onto your guests (or the best one we've had "your not even greek!") BUT if people really want to be there they will be! And it beats having to pay for your great auntie Maud's brother-in-law because he's classed as family!! lol.

    Happy wedding searching!!! xx

I think it depends what you want! We were going to go abroad with just parents, sisters brothers (if they wanted to) and then come home and hold a party for everyone who couldnt make it (and a excuse to wear the dress twice) However we never went ahead with this..H2Bs parents "are not travellers" and he really wanted them there. I was pretty gutted!! x

    Hi jade!!

We have just returned from getting married in Kos! We booked through Thomson and found it so much easier than trying to just talk to people over the internet/on the phone & they also helped a lot with translating documents too!

We are thinking of possibly getting married in Kefalonia as it is only a 2 hr flight as well so shouldn't be too expensive for guests -besides they can have a holiday while they are there ;P

If I add you as a friend'; can you help me with any questions I have? :)
