Hi All I need some help please. H2B and I are getting married in a Catholic Church. We need to pick some hymns, not sure how many, but we were told they need to be ones people generally know otherwise noone will sing which will be awful and also accessible, in other words not too challenging for those who aren't vocally talented. We know Shine Jesus Shine may not be most appropriate for a wedding and if noone really belts it out it sounds awful so that's off the menu especially as our priest wasn't keen on it for the wedding. So I have a list of ones I like and that I think people will know so just hoping you could all give me your thoughts on the following hymns:
Be Thou My Vision Make Me a Channel of Your Peace Walk in The Light Bind Us Together Father In My Life I See O Lord my God When I in Awesome Wonder (how great thou art) Be Still for the Presence of the Lord Love Divine all Love Excelling As I kneel Before You Give Me Joy in My Heart Tell Out My Soul Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer
Please let me know which hymns you know, like and think will be appropriate for a wedding.
Also feel free to make any other suggestions as they will be gratefully received, if I'm not sure what they are I can u tube them.
Thank you xxx

Well I know most of them but it depends how often your guests go to church really? However I do know that when I was at first and middle school we sang Give Me Joy in My Heart in our assembleys so I should imagine quite a few people would know that one, and its quite a nice one for a wedding too really xxx

Hi, I'm not having hymns as I'm getting married in a registry office but do know some of the hymns :-)
How great thou art is a lovely hymn which most people should know?? Make me a channel of your peace may be a little quiet(if you know what I mean??) but that said another lovely hymn??!! Give me joy in my heart I think is GREAT for a wedding!!!
Why do you think Shine, Jesus, Shine is not appropriate for a wedding?? But, I know what you mean about it won't sound right if it's not belted out!!!
My suggestions are Lord ofall Hopefulness or All things Bright and Beautiful??
Hope this helps :-)

Thanks LinziJo. I know many of our guests don't go to church regularly. Our priest said we should think abiut hymns they sing on songs of praise because then everyone will know them, he was so sweet I didn't have the heart to tell him that majority of people do not watch songs of praise. Most of the ones on that list I know from when I was a kid but I went to Catholic primary and secondary plus mass every Sunday so can't remember some of them if I knew then from school or church.

Thanks Rachael, very helpful. I'll have to look u tub3 the first one you suggested. Shine Jesus Shine I think may be a bit happy clappy and ifnour guests don't reall belt out it'll be ruined so would rather not have it. Plus, when we have it in mass my dad pulls a face too lol, I think safer to keep with the more traditional ones xxx

Good list, I perhaps know 75% and the tunes evade me for the others (quick g00gle will sort that out) Definitely ask your priest what he thinks if he wasn't keen on Shine jesus Shine, as maybe any more modern ones will get the same views. My Nan wants us to have Jerusalem. As she feels its patriotic and they sang it at William and Kate's wedding. At school we used to sing "one more step" I'm not over keen but its one most people my age know (like Linzi-jo, its a school one isnt it)

Thanks GC2B, im not sure I had one more step at school, just tubed it, it's very primary school isn't it. I've been to other weddings in CofE that have Jerusalem but never sung it in a Catholic church I have to admit. Wills and Kate also had Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer and Love Divine all Love Excelling.

Love divine all excelling is a nice one, and lots of people will know. Give me joy is great too.
I like be still for the presence of the lord too, however I associate it more with funerals, but that might be because I've only been to one funeral with hymns and they sang that, so that might be just me!
I'm not familiar with any of the others, sorry.
Is all things bright and beautiful out? I think that might be traditionally a c of e one. Or morning has broken (is that even a hymn?)
I'm trying to think back to school assemblies - should have spent least time smoking behind the shed lol!

I'm not overly keen on hymns, but I do quite enjoy 'Give Me Joy in My Heart', it's so cheery.
If only life could be one long tea break
CommentAuthorInDreamland
Hmmmm, Give Me Joy In My Heart seems popular so I may have to push that one with Andy and the Priest and hope they both approve (just hope the guests all know it and will sing - well the Christian guests anyway).
Anyone else got any favourites from the list? Think a few of you said Love Divine All Love Excelling.

I think even non church goes will know sing hosanna. And love divine is a lovely one.
Is there any hymns that mean anything to deceased relatives? It could be a nice way of remembering them...
Bind them together seems quite appropriate for a wedding xxx

LK you're on form tonight!
Thanks LauraJo - I was thinking of contacting my family in Malaysia and asking what my grandmothers favourite was as I want to remember her at the wedding. She was very religious, she did the rosary every day so when she passed away last year that was the only thing I asked for, I will be walking down the aisle with her rosary in my hand then pass to my dad for safe keeping when I reach the altar.

Why thank you! I just told hubby about this thread and he just started singing 'we plough the fields and scatter the good seeds on the land'...He reckons it's to do with baby-making rather than harvesting...he's a strange one. I'd probably recommend NOT using this one.

I was talking to my mum this morning about hyms and asked her what she had at her wedding.... maybe an idea to see what your parents or his parents had too? Also my mum suggested to print off all the words ot each hym and see which words mean more to you and you like the sound off xxx

I have chosen Make Me a Channel of Your Peace, I remember it from school and it always makes me cry. No sure which others we will have thinking Lord of the Dance (think that's what its called). We are having a full mass so not sure how many Jymns we need!! it's normally 6 on a Sunday??
CommentAuthorElinor Claire
Firstly, avoid those that are mainly school hymns, as people can't think of them as anything else. Definitely avoid Bind Us Together and Give Me Oil In My Lamp. The most obvious one is Love Divine, and Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer is well known and a great hymn. Make Me A Channel is also familiar, and Be Thou My Vision has beautiful words. You only need two hymns, but you could add a third.
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.

Oooh thanks, hopefully we don't need more than 3.
Will find out tomorrow during our meeting with the priest.
H2B and I both love Love Divine All Love Excelling, Guide me O Thou Great Redeemer and also O Lord MY God When I In Awesome Wonder. I also love Bind Us Together, Make me A Channel of Your Peace and Be Thou My Vision.
Fingers crossed tomorrow we can agree them.

Lovely choices. Yet to decide on processional music but have gone for just two hymns. Love Devine One more step
I chose Love devine, H2B chose one more step. I was thinking of having a modern one as an instrumental when signing the certificate or the music score of You raise me up.
Our organist is awesome and plays everything, I would like The Rose (pop song but beautfiul) as an instrumental somewhere too
