Does anyone that's done this before/is close to their wedding have any tips on how to go about choosing which companies to go with, and on how to get the best deals and bargains? I'm thrifty by nature, but I don't really want it to show on the biggest day of our lives!

firstly you should set a budget, then look on the web or any recommendations from friends. shop around for prices and also look at venue facilities eg, i have a couple of guests in wheelchairs so my first choice of venue was a no go as it had loads of stairs. the bay of e is good for bargains but the best place ive found for ideas is this site. find any brides near you and ask them if they have some ideas to throw at you. Also if you have any friends in certain trades get them involved too, i have got 'mates rates' for my cars, hair, buffet, hotel. it does help lots if you know someone you can rope in. i have also saved money making my own invites. good luck! :) x
21st October 2011 will be the best day of my life!!!

As long as you don't leave price tags on everything no one knows if you paid 10p or £1000 for something. I got loads of my little things in the sale and from ebay, local craft shops etc. Also we negotiated prices with suppliers as some will move a little with the price. Even if it is 10% of something if that's £1000 for the photography you have a £100 saving which can be used for something else!

iv just this morning started looking at venues and we have relatives from allover so trying to find a place kind of in the middle so its fair on evrybody and that we can afford is turning to be a right challenge!!iv got myself a big book of paper so put ideas and prices in and to try to narrow down what it is we'd actually like and then go from there....lists lists lists more lists, its endless but i love it x

I have to say, I love lists too, so this is setting up to be quite fun >:3
Spreadsheets for the budget and seating plan is another good one. My budget sheet works out what we budgeted for on each item. It then tells us the actual cost, deducts off deposits and payments to show us what is left to pay and at the end I list the contact numbers of the suppliers and their details etc so it is all together on one page.
