I have been engaged for almost 8 months now and apart from a very brief 'congratulations' on the day we got engaged my parents haven't uttered a word about my wedding. We got cards and huge congratulations from everybody except them! Although we haven't booked a venue or set a final date yet, we are planning and have pretty much decided on a date, I have tried talking to them about it and they don't seem interested at all and change the subject! It is getting so frustrating!! They like my H2B so surely they don't not want me to marry him, do they just not want me to get married? I am thinking that they are worried I will expect them to pay, but I haven't even mentioned paying to them and am planning on paying for it myself, but I am having so much trouble figuring out what their problem is?! Has anybody else had the same sort of problem?

Em, I completely understand my H2B proposed at 5am (he was picking me up after a flight) so I called my mum at half 7 before she started work at 8 so she would be one of the first to know first thing she said was "oh when are you getting the ring then?" no congratulations no nothing until I said to her a congratulations would have been nice but oh well. H2B mother gave me a shock I was adamant she didnt like me (we've been together 8 years like) but she gave us a massive hug went out got us two bottles of champagne and everything. But my mum I couldn't believe how much of a cow she was being, no sort of happiness whatsoever. Dont worry leave them too it and eventually they will come around, or feel left out, then they will come around.

Ah so sorry to hear that! At least it's not just my family! The main thing is I'm really close to my dad and thought he would be happy for me but they just seem like the are not bothered! I'm hoping you are right is that what happened with your mum? She came around in the end? Me and H2B are seriously thinking of going away and just getting married alone to save any hassle!

Sounds a lot like mine and my partners families, neither mention anything regarding us getting married, we mentioned a venue we liked to my partners mum who did nothing but try to sway us to other places that to be quite honest some were just horrendous (I'm by no means a snob either!), long story short, partner is a twin, he has a twin sister who is also engaged, seems to be my OH is a bit swept under the rug where weddings are concerned. Like you, we fully intend on paying for everything ourselves, but we have also had the trouble of families not talking about it, being unenthusiastic etc. If you get on with your planning etc you'll soon find their curiosity will get the better of them and they will get more excited the closer it gets. I know it's different but when I found out I was pregnant my Dad who I am really close to barely spoke to me for nearly 20 weeks because he was uncomfortable with the fact I was pregnant, as soon as I found out I was having a boy and that he was healthy everything changed, he couldnt wait to be a grandad and little one is the apple of his eye now :) all being well things will work out for you in the end xx

I can relate to all of this with my family too! Im just glad that the OHs family and my friends are overly excited! If it wasnt for them, i would have probably given up and eloped by now.

I am sure they will all come around soon enough but I think my family will be the same when we say to them that we are getting married even though it's second time round for both of us x

When we got engaged all my Mum could say was 'about time'. No one seemed too bothered about the wedding (even though I'm an only child) until we started asking if people would be willing to do certain jobs: FMIL makes candles so we asked if she would be willing to make some for the wedding, my Mum is really good at flower arranging so we asked if she would like to help me do our flowers; after that everyone started to get excited... although my Mum then took it too far and tried to take over. OH and I are now on a deadline to get EVERYTHING finished by the time my Mum's diary frees up on the 18th.
