Ok let me start by saying I am grateful for all the help I'm getting I really am but.....

A couple of my friends have offered their services with regards to cake and invitations which is great because all this DIY and cost cutting is a little bit too much for me, although I am of course going to be paying for the materials to make everything. Anyway, the trouble is as I have been planning this wedding for a few months now and as it is my wedding, I have very clear ideas on how I want things to look and despite telling them that I want this design or this colour or this whatever, both of them keep trying to change my mind, like 'why don't you do this instead' or 'I think this looks better' and in some cases they are right and changes have been made. However, having paid for all the materials I am mortified to discover whilst talking to my friend over the phone that she has not only finished making the invites (great) but decided to make a few changes because she thought it looked better (not so great). Both me and OH were really pleased with the way it was. Ok granted I haven't seen the changes and they may be better but tbh I'm more than a little bit miffed. Why did she feel the need to change it, its not important what she likes, its what I want that matters surely. Like I say I am grateful really and I feel a bit mean complaining about her on here when shes only trying to help but I want things to be just right and I felt so happy with the invites that we'd decided on and now I just feel deflated :(

i made invites for my dads wedding but i made a sample and showed them to my step mom before i printed everything out and kept showing them to her along the way to make sure that she was happy. didnt your friend give you a sample before she made them all?

hope the changes are only small and they dont change your ideas too much x

Yes she did thats the point, we have samples that we'd agreed on, we then bought the materials, she went away to make them, then decided to change them because she thought it would look better and I guess thats why I'm annoyed. We'd agreed on a final style and I feel she should of either stuck with that or put the invites on hold till she checked with me any changes she wanted to make but she didn't and like I say they might look great but I'm just concerned that I will end up with a batch of card that look nothing like the sample that I have here in hand, which is what I want. And I feel like a bridezilla lol but its really bugging me!

    Fingers crossed,

Like you we have accepted a lot of help from friends and family. My cousin actually makes wedding invited as a side business so my aunt is buying the materials and my cousin is making them. Although she works with brides all the time and has been really professional, sending us mock ups to proof and generally coming up with some really good ideas to take our 'rough' ideas and make them fantastic!

Its bad she didn't think to tell you about the changes, or check in any way!

I would be annoyed too - its nice of people to help, but its your wedding and she should have stuck with what you wanted or at least checked that it was ok to change it. She probably just got caught up in the creativity and didn't think.

I hope you like what she has made you x

aww fingers crossed! I know what it is like to have a certain image in your head on what you have decided on, but then find its different. Thankfully my situation was a slight colour change due to continuous out of stock...not someone you've trusted to make invites changing them as and when they please. I will keep my fingers crossed though and hope that they are stunning, that you like the changes, and that you take a tight rein on everyone else you enlist to help with your day. That might sound bridezilla-ish from me, but Ive been run ragged by one of my bridesmaids taking off on her own whims, and Ive had to make changes to suit her. Its not good! Hugs xx

Just a quick update. It all ended well thankfully :) It was a bit tense at first because she didn't seem to agree that the ribbon detail on the front was important and she felt it was put to better use on the back (which was the change that I was on about). Anyway, I stood my ground and said that me and OH really like it on the front and feel the front would look bare without it and that as far as I'm concerned the front is much more important than the back. But as I did agree that the ribbon detail that she had done on the back did also look good, we decided to combine the 2 (which will mean buying more ribbon but that not a problem). So we added extra ribbon and a bit more detailed card to one of the invites to see how it looked and tbh it does actually look better than the original and we both got our own way lol Anyway, I have left her to finish them off with clear instructions not to change a thing ;) so crisis averted :) Plus I have calculated that even with extra ribbon the cards will have cost less than 50p each (inc envelopes), so I really can't grumble :)

Glad it's all worked out for you!

Have to say this is one reason I don't want anyone's help lol; I am WAY too much of a control freak! However, I've had plenty of unsolicited help/advice regardless eg people asking how much our photography was going to cost (who even does that?! While I share online, that isn't information I'm prepared to share with random colleagues!) and then going on to recommend people who are 'nice and cheap'. I get that they mean well, but it's kind of awkward; I just smile and say thanks and change the subject lol

Update - the invites are all done now and well my advice to anyone thinking of getting a friend to do their invites is.... don't do it lol I am grateful for her help of course but me and OH looked them over last night and decided that only about half of them are suitable for use (luckily theres enough for the day guests) so we are going to do some completely different cheapo print offs for the evening guests instead. The problem with the ones which aren't good enough is that there are hairs stuck in the glue, some of the card doesn't match (long story but she ran out of card and couldn't find the exact same stuff again), some of the bits were torn or grubby and quite a lot of them were not symmetrical. I feel like I'm nit picking a bit but if I was a paying customer I'd be fuming, anyway I'm not so we can make do, half perfect ones is better than none, so its partly turned out well ;)

I'm glad you got enough for the day guests at least. I'm so anal about things I would only let people help if they were sat with me in my kitchen being supervised hahaha

Luckily my bm's know this and are happy to help as long as I provide wine and chocolate as compensation for standing at their shoulder :)

Oh and they stink of fags. I don't need to send them yet so think I'm going to store them in a drawer with something heavily scented to hopefully get rid of the stench. Very unappealing as we are both non smokers :(

Ewwww bride of frank, not nice. Everytime my son gets back from his dads and I open his rucksack the smell of cigarettes hits me :(

I have managed to get rid of the smell out of his books before by putting them in an airtight bag with baking soda sprinkled in for a couple of days, my best friend said if you put dried lavender in with the baking soda it smells lovely - but I haven't tried that as I hate the smell of lavender too.

That is very true kelbel :) despite all my moaning i am actually pleased with the outcome. Ok so we only have enough for the day guests but the invites that are good are beautiful and look really professional now I've stuck the details in, so its not all bad and although we still need to sort out something else for evening guests, I have plenty of time for that, so I guess its worked out ok in the end :)
