As some of you will know; me and h2b were toying with the idea of having an holiday abroad but we were thinking about this the other day - How much notice would you give someone as I know family and close friends (anyone that can come) will need time to save to come. Especially as coming to the place where we have our wedding might be their holiday destination for the year; they might not be able to come if we don't give them enough time to save or they book and pay for another holiday that year?

Obviously we need to decide where we'll have our wedding if abroad and what date but when would you send out the invites?

Thanks and thinking of having our wedding in May 2015!

We told people that we thought may come as soon as we knew, which was about 13 months before the wedding. About a month after that, we sent out STD's. Then when we knew flights were available to book we called/emailed everyone to let them know which hotel we would be staying at, in case they also wanted to stay at the same hotel (one one couple didn't, but they were older and are quite well off, so they made their own arrangements).

For my mum, it was the holiday of a lifetime as she'd never flown that far before and she made a real meal of it - going to the Grand Canyon as well as hopping on an internal flight to San Francisco for a week afterwards. So that worked out really well.

I'd say that if you give people plenty of notice and they really want to come, they will. You can pay in instalments for most travel agencies so the further you book in advance, the more time they will have to pay.

I agree, I would want to know as soon as possible. If it was someone I was really close to I would do everything in my power to make sure I could make it. Having the maximum time to plan and save would really help.

Yeah thanks LK and Sarah; that's what I thought. Our proposed date is just under 22 months away so got some time to think about it but I like things being organised or at least knowing what I am doing so I would ideally like to decide if we are going abroad or not as soon as possible and then choose a place soon too; I know that sounds like rushing but I hate not knowing. Plus we know how much we need to save then :D

I was thinking about letting people know at least a year in advance anyway; I found a good hotel and flights package yesterday which people could stay at - we'll probably stay at it too as it is lovely if we do go to Kafelonia :D

    Thanks guys :)

id be telling them now so they can start saving if they want to come they can at least start saving so they are ready to book, my h2b brother gave us 1 year to save for their wedding in Greece, we had just booked our holiday 2 spain and their wedding was a week after we returned, we couldn't afford to go and couldn't swap it, his brother doesn't talk to us now or his wife xx

That's really selfish of them @HappyBunny. I think if you want everyone to be able to attend your wedding one of the first things you do is not make it a destination wedding. With destination weddings you really need to be ok with the fact that more often then not people aren't going to be able to make it.

Yeah Sarah; that's why I want to give plenty of notice; We know some people won't be able to come if we have it abroad but as long as the main family members are there and close friends then we don't mind as we will do an evening reception when we get back :)
