had a letter off the registry office 2 say that we owe £20, as the fees are increasing in the next tax, but the thing is we paid balance in full on the 24/09/2010 wen we gave notice, so can they increase the price after ive paid the balance, cant find any wording that says if they can or can not in all the paperwork, hope some1 can help me out xxx

didnt think you could give notice so far in advance, so sorry cant help! what i would think though is £20 worth falling out with the registry office about, being as they are the ones that are gonna marry you? (I'm guessing)

i would have thought that since you've paid the balance in full it's a bit unfair of them to try and charge you £20 because of the tax increase in Jan. I would challenge them about it and you might get their decision changed? Always worth asking nicely about it first, but if the answer is no maybe take it further if you really can't afford the extra £20? But I do agree with Linzi, you don't want to fall out with them!

Hmmmm wonder if they'll try and do this to me... Would be interesting to see if any other brides getting married next year start getting similar letters....

If the tax increase is only 2.5% then to owe a further £20 your entire registrar cost would have had to be around £800, which sounds a ridiculous amount for a registrar anyway - I would definitely query the extra!

we gave notice in october and as yet havent had a letter saying anything about tax increases or anything, will let you know if we do, but its definately wrong when the balance is paid in full but they are asking for more. firstly the highest cost is for giving notice, which was done this year and should not be liable for the tax increase, the wedding costs ( around £40 at the register office) next year i suppose could be liable for the tax increase, but that doesnt amount to much. maybe it varies by which district you're in and their polocies :/

    thank u ladies!
i asked them and thier excuse was basically coz the prices r increasing, but nowhere in the paperwork does it say that they can r cannot do it, i have a friend of mine who is looking at law in uni checking it out 4 me, if they can give me a reasonable explanation then i will happily pay the extra all b it a struggle, but if theres not then i dont fancy paying it really, including giving notice i have paid £170.50, my sister on the other hand has only paid the deposit and notice fee and has it included on her invoice, shes getting married at the same place next october, so she wil pay £190.50 xxx

In all of our literature from the registry office and on the website it states that the prices increase in April every year and if you get married after that you would pay the increased price (regardless of when you pay). We were also reminded of this when we gave notice and again when the invoice came in. It gives current price but mentions an increase.
It is not increasing due to VAT but due to council budgets

When we gave notice we paid the going rate and that was it. However when we paid for the registra fee for coming to the venue even though we paid in 2010 we had to pay the 2011 price which was an extra £20! I thought it was a little cheeky but what could we do?!

I sriously doubt they can charge you extra when you have already paid in full, if they wanted you to pay the 2011 prices they should have charged that at the time x

Do you have a letter that says you have paid in full, and that there is no outstanding fees? Because they have no right to start charging you extra. The moment you pay a deposit, the vat you pays should stay at that rate. My h2b wants us to book everything now so we don't have to pay the higher vat, but we're not that organised. Deffiniatly argue it.

bit different but, my bridal shop sent me a letter giving me the option of paying the remaining balance of my dress early (pre new year) so as to avoid the vat increase which i think is very decent of them. This has now made me very aware of other increases that may occur next year that i hadnt even considered

MzEden is right - we tried to pay the registrar in advance but they said I couldn't and the price will go up in April. In everything I have from them it does say that prices will go up in April too. I don't think you are gonna get out of this one and for £20 is it really worth the stress of trying to fight it? It is definately nothing to do with the VAT increase which goes up on the 4th Jan.

If you've already given your notice, then the service has been provided and that's the end of it - it's like charging someone extra when they walk out of the cinema, it's ridiculous!!! We gave our notice last month, and haven't been charged anything since. Hope you get it sorted xxx

our venue sent us a letter weeks ago saying that we could pay the balance in full as to not incur the vat rise ..or we could just leave it .......when i put it to Mr lala he said "well we will gain more than the extra in interest if we leave our money in the savings account" so leaving it we are ....the extra only comes to about £100

We've just been and booked our registrar and was told that you have to pay however much it costs within the financial year that you're getting married, so even though we've booked it, we'll have to go through 2 increases in cost, so it might have gone from being £450 to £500 by the time we get married - plus all the other charges they add on!!
