as some of you know we were going to use winkworth arboretum as pinic venue for free and we said we would pay for everyones entry fee which would be £250, so now i have just received an email from the manager there saying he has spoken to his manager and they now want to charge £1000!!! what!! that is our whole budget! i don't why the guy had to talk to his manager! quite upset now we have to find somewhere where we can have the picnic don't know what to do???? had it all planned now we will have a gap from 10am ceremony at registry office til 7pm hall, we are allowed the hall allday but will be a bit boring with no bar or music til 7pm arghhhhhhh!!

new it was too good to be true!!

Oh hunny I am so sorry to hear this! I would be demanding to know why you were told one thing and now they are changing their minds. I would complain to your local council for sure! Just because it is a wedding they are upping there prices! Is it an area that the public can use at the same time? If so I wouldn't even bother booking I would just turn up on the day and pay for everyone! They hear the word "wedding" and pound signs start going off like fruit machines in their eyes!!!!!!!!!! How about Busbridge lakes.. They are only open to the public on certain days throughout the year the rest of the time is for group bookings. £6.50 per adult £4.00 per child, Free parking. Not sure if they would be able to accommodate you but worth a shot!

Phillips Memorial Park and Cloiste ??

    Loseley Park???

Hmm, Nicpep might be worth consulting on this. If you had an oral contact for this, then I don't think they can suddenly decide they want more money from you.

There are certain conditions for a contract - even an oral one - to be valid, and if he offered you the venue for a price (albeit only the entrance fees) and you accepted that offer, then he might have a job reneging on it..

Ok, DP is right about the oral contract. However, the problem with oral contracts is that the other person can deny ever saying that to you and you'd have an uphill battle trying to prove it.

You said he emailed you, were there previous emails discussing it? Does he say in this email that he is changing the price? (you can copy and paste it in a message to me if you like hun).

I have looked at the prices on the website and its £5.30 each, was that the price you were paying or did he give you a reduced rate, or has he upped that price? Either way, I would write a stinking letter of complaint and make sure that the national trust get a copy too (and tell them you have send a copy to the national trust)

I agree with everyone else. you'd think they'd be welcome for the business at any rate, in this financial climate. Like the others have said is there anywhere else around you, you could go.

    Go girl nicpep!!!

Ok so now they are saying we can still go and just pay for everyone to come in without a marquee do i risk it and not have one?? what if the weather is bad?? oh god don't know what to do unless i get everyone to bring their garden umbrellas with them?

I sent him an email he sent me saying this originally back to him, i'm not sure whether i want to do it there now just out of principal!
my lovely brother has offered us his garden so we could do it there and he says he was looking into buying a gazeebo type thing anyway so he would buy that his garden is lovely all tiered
    hmm decisions decisions!

if we go to arboretum with no cover it will guarantee poo weather for sure!

I think I'd be tempted to tell them to stick it - and they've lost a considerable amount of money that you would have paid them for doing pretty much bugger all.

Sounds like your brothers garden is the best option. I agree, i would tell them where to stick it. They cant even decide what to charge you, i wouldn't trust them to help on the big day.

Go for it hun!!! The last wedding I went to was on the 10th September last year and it was in her back garden, it was a gorgeous day but they had gazebo's up (3 of them lol) and they supplied all the food, buffet style! it was fabulous! They also had a hog roast, DJ and live band! The garden looked beautiful and we were still going strong at 2am it was FAB...go for it! In fact I would cancel the hall and have it all there ;o) x x
