Yesterday we received our Marriage Ceremony booklet after we gave notice.
Obviously, in terms of music it states that the music due to us not having a religious ceremony and getting married at our venue rather than a Church, the music and readings etc cannot have any religious content.
I have looked everywhere and cannot find any info in what is counted towards what would be seen as religious or not. Is it words or is it the context? What words can you not use?
I am asking this because the song I want to walk down the aisle to and have my heart set on has the word heaven in it slap bang in the middle of the song and I would be gutted if I couldn't use it. The context it appears in is:
Heaven knows what will come next So emotional, you're so complex

It varies from registrar to registrar - but I think that should be fine.
The rules were relaxed a few years ago, so that just because a song mentions heaven or angels it won't be automatically disallowed...but best check with the registrar. They usually ask you for your song choices anyway, and will check the lyrics...personally, I wouldn't draw attention to it, but I'd the rest of the songs non religious, I think it should be fine xx

Thank you Laura, that has reassured me as I was starting to panic I would have to choose another song. I have only checked 1 song out of the 3 we have chosen and stopped after the first due to having a panic lol!

I agree with the other poster - depends upon Registrar... a year or so, in Cambridge, they wouldn't allow Angels by Robbie W - now they do. I do know, that if the song has a religious connection - i.e. Ava Maria you can't have it even if you have the instrumental version.. daft !

I agree it is so confusing and annoying. Because it's not just religious content but if it has any for lack of better word religious connections.

Isn't it just that the readings/songs can't be taken from the bible or hymn books?

The booklet isn't very helpful. All it says is "Neither your music or readings should include any religious content" Not even any guidance on what is/isn't classified as religious content.

You should contact your registrar and ask what is classified as religious content so there for you are 100% sure and get back to us so we also know Maybe show your registrar VOWS you like or songs you like and see if they are A OK to be said and played =D ♥ X

I think I shall be emailing at some point this week. It seems a very grey area.

Where we are getting married we can't have any songs with words like angels, heaven etc...
