I cant begin to say how stressed out I am, we have had so much bad luck with our wedding venue, we orig booked our church wedding back in may for may 5th 2012, so we found a venue booked it and then we decided two weeks ago to go see it again so i could decide on color themes ect only to be greeted with...'i'm sorry this place is being sold and im not sure anyone is going to be here in may'?!! we were gutted and sice then We have tried EVERYWHERE and the only place free is a pub with a weird shaped room that im not sure im going to get everyone in and they currently dont have enough tables and chairs and there not sure if they are getting anymore :( I just want to cry right now. We have decided to look furthur afield for a venue but didnt want a long traveling distance. We did think of changing the date but soooo much is booked now and we picked the 5th of may as we have family all over the country and its a bank holiday weekend. i hope we find somewhere soon :(

Erm have you tried local working mens clubs or sports hall's. Maybe a local church hall or town hall? All will have large blank canvass rooms that you can do pretty much anything you want to. We booked a church hall for our sons christening and paid £35 an hour for it and got the local pub to come in with their own bar for £150 then the guests just paid for there own drinks throughout the day so maybe you can do something similar??

Oh no! Hope you find somewhere soon! Hav you thought about putting a marquee up somewhere? Or asking your original venue to help you find an alternative?
CommentAuthorBridezilla
Oh, what a nightmare! Is there anywhere that has room for a marquee? A lot of places are quite small inside but some have plenty of room outside that could also be used. I've been to weddings where the reception was at the parent's home and they set up a marquee in the garden. Of course they were lucky enough to have a big enough garden for it.
It was all decorated beautifully as well and looked absolutely fantastic.
Golf clubs often have function rooms that they use for wedding receptions. Might that be an option?

I hope you find something hun, sounds like a nightmare. Community Centres and Working Men's clubs can be made to look fabulous with drapes and little touches. x

The day I marry the man of my dreams!
For the lower budget - have you tried village halls? Small hotels and all historic pubs in the surrounding area?
For a bigger budget - all hotels, stately homes and the likes?
The hotel chain old Eglish Inns do a great package deal for £999 for 50 people - if there's room for more to sit they just double the price. Have a look online their website shows you all sister hotels in your area.

Another route to investigate is hiring out a nice restaurant for your reception - Ive seen some lovely weddings like this xx

Surely as you have booked with your original venue there is some kind of legal obligation? As bridalmiss says can't they help ypu find somewheer else, I would of thought it was the least they could do!
CommentAuthorRayanne
I dont understand...do you want to find a venue thats not going to cost anything? If so, you may need to be a little less...picky.

Raynne, No I am not being picky and why on earth would I expect to find a venue for free? The orignal venue has cancelled as they have sold it and they cannot gaurantee if anyone will be there to host the reception so they told us to go and find somewhere else. They refunded our deposit and apologised and that was our lot. We have tried village halls and there isnt many around here and all the local pubs with functions rooms and hotels, ive managed to find one hotel with a free space so going to check it out later on. thanks for all your advice x

I'd second the restaurant suggestion - that's what we did for ours. Had a few tables scattered about, cleared one area for the disco - they were awesome. And the food was amazing - everyone commented on it! Good luck babe - such a horrible thing to have happen. Hx
Vegas baby!

Thats shocking behaviour from your venue, how awfull for you.Can the people from your venue not contact the new owners or put you in touch with them to see if they would honour your booking? I think the venue should of compensated you on top of refunding your deposit.I do hope you manage to get it sorted very soon xxx

I hope you get somewhere, that horrible of the venue to do that to you, they could have told you they were selling or thinking of selling to warn you.
What about hiring a bar or club and decorating it? xx

where are you from? i know a few free venues in essex as these are what we hav been looking at.. xx
CommentAuthorRayanne
...sorry I misinterpreted the term "free" you meant as in...available, not as in cost. I took it as cost, hence why I said maybe you need to be willing to change a few parameters. However, no youre paying for it you shouldnt/ Your venue have behaved appallingly, they should have called you as soon as they knew they may need to sell it.

What about a local scout hut? I know that sounds rediculous but at my scout hut it was a huge place and would have glammed up quite nicely.

hey where about are you based? maybe someone on here could help... i agree with the others, shocking behaviour especially where they havent got in touch with you to let you know xx

Local social clubs tend to be reasonable and have the space to accommodate big parties. They tend to have a function room and give you free choice on what you want to do with it. We did this for our evening reception, mil did the catering and we hired a fantastic dj. Failing that, how about a village/parish hall or cricket/rugby club?
CommentAuthorFuture mrs mac
When booking a new place remember they are unlikely to fill that date now so negosit a discount - so places slightly out of your price range might be able to hold your reception within your budget. Try every hotel, stately home, community halls, pubs etc and make a list of all that are free (including ones miles away) then visit them all and decide from there - you could get a bus for all your guests and get the price of the bus off the venue? Does your church have a separate hall? xx
CommentAuthorLisa Ramos
I am absolutely disgusted with your venue! Surely as they took a deposit from you, the new owners are obligated to honour your booking? Otherwise what is the point in having a contract. I would ring the citizens advice bureau and would even consider going to the papers and appealing for a venue. It would be fantastic publicity for any venue who could accomodate your wedding.

Thankyou all, i live in Telford Shropshire, ive not had chance to get back on here ive been super busy trying to sort it out, we have found the telford white house hotel which is free on our date, but its built within the telford football grounds and all there decor is telford united lol, but me and OH have been today and it was set up for an xmas party and was shocked it looked so lovely, everything is in royal blue though so i will have to play around in decor i think, there quoting £1400 for the buffet and room hire is waverd as we are having over 90 people. I cant believe how expensive their chair covers are to hire! £4 per chair! Anyone know anywhere around here thats cheaper?! Thanks again girls your all great x
