Due to circumstances outside of our control, we can no longer have a church wedding.. Reached the end of that journey and we just can't take anymore disappointment, upset and rejection so we are making the best of it! So, can brides who are having a civil marriage post their run through of the ceremony? Really struggling with what happens when! Thanks :) x

So sorry you can't have your church wedding owl and butterfly that really sucks and is unfair I hope it's a mega big reason why they are not letting your wedding go ahead when you are legally allowed to Marry your other half Xxx

Thanks, as usual it is out of our control and something they could have easily sorted in time which sucks but hey ho, focus on the positives right? We've booked a registrar and venue in my hometown which has a lot of meaning to both of us and we will have hopefully secured the cathedral again to have a blessing which suits our religious beliefs a lot more so it works out for the best really! xx

From attending my friends wedding at a registry office it was quite similar to a church wedding apart from the religious aspect. The groom stood at the front while the bride was walked down the isle. There were some readings and her father gave a speech. They then said their vows and did the whole "You may now kiss the bride" etc etc. They had their choice of music played while they signed the register and had photos taken. Then they walked back up the isle together as man and wife and we went outside for more photos and champagne :) I hope that's helped you a little and I'm sorry that you're not able to have the church wedding you want xxx
Getting ready to marry my soul mate! :-D
CommentAuthorCatherineR
Thanks Nelinde - it is pretty much the same from what I've read just minus hymns, readings, prayers etc.! Hopefully we can make it 'our' ceremony despite the ups and downs xxx

So sorry you didnt get your Church wedding Catherine! Pleased you have an alternative though and fingers crossed for the blessing! :) I know it doesnt always seem much of a consolation, but either way you will be marrying Debbie and that's what your whole day is about :) At least you've got solid plans xx

That's such a shame. It's going to take some churches a while to agree to do same sex marriages, particularly those that are part of a wider structure, as it has to go through processes of consultation, debate and voting, and that couldn't start until the law changed. Also the Anglicans are currently prevented by law, but there has been talk in the Church in Wales about trying to change that. It's frustrating for those clergy who are in favour, as the majority of them can currently only offer a blessing. I think Quakers and Unitarians have allowed it already.

Oh no, that sucks :-( But, a civil ceremony can still be lovely. Ours went like this:
Bridesmaid's entered one by one to Handel's Hornpipe (love that piece of music!)
I entered after the bridesmaids were seated to Pachelbel's Canon (and tried really hard not to cry!)
Dad kissed me on the cheek, and shook my OH's hand
Registrar said a few words, then we sat
Registrar said a few more words, and called the first reader, who read 'The Art of a Good Marriage'
More legal bits, then our second reader read 'I love you because'
Then came the vows and exchanging the rings, followed by signing the register with our witnesses, during which Florence and the Machine's 'You got the love', and Coldplay's 'Viva la Vida' were played
Finally, we exited to 'All you need is love' by The Beatles, with me and OH processing out first, then the bridal party pairing up (MOH/best man; BM's with the ushers), and everyone else followed suit, which was lovely
We then popped into a side room while the guests headed outside, before walking down the stairs and outside for the confetti throw :-)
We loved our ceremony. I know it must be very difficult if you're religious (I couldn't have had a religious ceremony), but it can still be beautiful and meaningful. The venue we married in was really lovely, with beautiful high ceilings and large windows, and little touches like the pedestal arrangements, and the string trip (who played all the music listed above and also played before the ceremony to entertain our guests as they arrived), made it extra special :-)
CommentAuthorCatherineR
Thanks hun. It really hurts when you are religious and are rejected purely for who you are... Maybe I should have stayed hidden and that would have been ok to them! Having a civil ceremony isn't bad at all but it is so hard giving up your dreams that you have thought about since being a little girl.. Christened, confirmed, everything but not meant to be. I'll always be sad about that to a certain extent though as my whole life was there. I am looking forward to getting married in my hometown though I must admit though!! Your ceremony looks like it was absolutely magical :)

I'm glad you've got the cathedral blessing at least. I can imagine how hurt and disappointed you must have been, as a practicing Christian myself I could never have imagined not having a church wedding. The one good thing about having a civil ceremony and then a blessing is that you can make the blessing service exactly what you want it to be, as there are no legal requirements. You could consider the registry office ceremony simply an extra bit to satisfy the legal requirements, and then the cathedral service the real spiritual wedding. You could easily make your vows and exchange your rings again, as well as being prayed for and blessed.

Yes, you are right Elinor. It is very difficult to imagine our day without the church that has always been there but what are we supposed to do. We can't change the laws and we certainly have tried to make it work as you know. I think we've reached the point where we can't keep putting ourselves through this anymore and make the best of what we've got!

One thing that sticks in my mind is a comments on Mrs Browns boys. She told th vicar who would not marry her son and his boyfriend, that marriage was about love and that the church should see it as a marriage of love, whether it be same sex or not.

Yes, I something similar on the local news last night who were one of ten couples who converted their CP to a marriage. It was lovely :) I reckon it might happen one day but not in our lifetime sadly. I have a feeling our friend would do that - have the marriage in Las Vegas and then just have a big party when they are back!
