Right have been thinking about negotiating out package that comes with wine with the meal and champayne for toasts to instead have some fruity cider and not have champers but have another top up for toasts to reduce costs aswell as the fact neither me or OH or alot of the people we know like wine or champers.
But OH's mum is on about asking the venue if she can bring in aload of wine for the evening as shes a Wino, ( they don't nomaly do corkage as they have had people bring bad stuff and got stick for it) but im just like she has not even tryed there wine and they must do a good one else why would they have banned corkage due to bad experience. Aswell as the fact I don't give 2 hoots about the wine Yuck! I would prefer to not have wine at all.

I'm not a fan of wine either, i only drink it coz my friends do..it makes me terribly pi$$ed rather quickly and gives me an evil hangover!
I would rather have beers for everyone and lemonade to make it shandy or have some lambrusco lol or even cider like koppaberg or summat like that!!! I HATE Champagne but again i will drink it if friends do, i only really like fizzy wine that's sweet.
I'm still considering beer and stuff like that coz it's like £16-£20 a bottle of wine and it's like £3ish a bottle of beer so i could just give everyone 2 bottles of summat instead of half a bottle of wine each and i would probably save a bit money, i bet people would prefer it as well.

Why not ask if you can do other drinks instead?

Can't you take OH's mum for a drink there one night and get her to taste the wine, like you say it will be nice there and she can just buy wine if she wants to drink it.

If you and OH don't drink wine and don't enjoy champagne then I agree, don't get it, especially if most others don't either. But there's nothing stopping people who do drink wine buying it at the bar

I have at one point thought about vetoing the wine completely , I mean I have to go to weddings where all im offered is wine which I hate, so why could I not just offer, Beer and Fruity Cider

I think we're guna go with that y'know, the more i think of it the more i think the other options would be so much better for us, maybe a bottle or 2 of wine on the tables for others but beer, lemonade and ciders all round for everyone else and for the toast i think fizzy wine thats sweet but i cant remember it's name and if all else fails bucks fizz!!!!

A good venue will be flexible. I'm tee total so they supplied elderflower for me. We did go with the rest of the drinks in the package as 75% of our guests like what was included, the rest bought their preferred drinks at the bar.

Maybe you can negotiate on half the package and ask for half to be what you want to drink xx

    :-/

Uh-oh... You've got me thinking now... I wouldn't want to go paying for wine that no-one wants to drink. I'll have to have a good think about that.

Maybe a nice summery long drink or cocktail jug, maybe Pimms?

Would your venue allow you to offer your guests an option? That way everyone is catered for. We're doing this: we're sending out RSVP cards with menu options, and have also included drinks options, so people can choose what they want in advance and we can cater to them.

Personally I don't drink many alcoholic drinks other than wine, esp not with a meal, so I do think you should provide some wine for those who like it, inc your MIL2B. As far as the wine itself goes, see if the venue will allow a tasting session. We did this as the wine is important to us and if it had been bad, we'd have paid extra to upgrade.

I wouldn't let her bring her own though; just say the venue doesn't allow it (which is true) and leave it at that.

Is there a bar at your venue? Our drinks package included half a bottle of wine per person and champagne to toast - but I do love wine!

I would say the majority of my guests preferred wine with the meal, even the beer drinkers, because you get too full on lager. A couple of the guests bought pints from the bar during the meal and didn't seem to mind. I'm not sure how much money swapping wine for fruity cider would save - most fruit ciders are premium brands and house wine (providing it is palatable - some hotels serve absolute dross!) will often work out cheaper....

For me personally, beer and cider don't go with a three course meal - I suspect I'd be feeling very sluggish and bloated afterwards...not to mention the peeing factor...unless you're serving curry, then it's got to be lager!

An alternative could be giving guests drink tokens - then they can drink whatever they want.
