Arrrghh, so have hit my first hurdle. The other day my mum paid for my deposit for my wedding cupcakes. Now after phoning the lady 4 times and asking for a receipt - she finally emailed one over. Now the woman has added an extra £100 onto the price!???!!!!!

In the original email she said -

"The price per cupcake in this instance is £1.80. In terms of the top tier this will depend on the figures. The cake itself, if it is to be sponge, would be £35.00 with the figures made fomr icing and being an extra £25.00. Local delivery and use of my stand is included in the price quoted to you" - thats the exact email she sent me

Now for 65 cupcakes at £1.80 ea and the top sponge at £35 that makes £152. (didnt want her to make a topper cos we are getting our own)

She is saying its now £45 for the top cake and £25 for delivery, how can she change her prices like this?? So she emailed my mum to say the full price was £240!!!It makes me think the woman is totally at it. I am very tempted just to cancel her and find someone else. How can she do that? We havent even had a meeting with her to discuss details!

    What should I do?? :-(

Personally Id have to ask her why the price has changed and is not the terms that you agreed to. How much deposit was it your mum paid? Is it a cheque that can be stopped?

I would also question the price change and calculate it in detail in the e-mail. Stay friendly but firm.

I'd just re-quote the original costs and attach the email - and explain politely that you had booked her on agreeing with the original price, and without any explanation of the increase then you will be cancelling your order and requesting your full deposit back - could be she's just sent you the wrong details back and it's a misunderstanding, am sure she's not necessarily trying to fleece you!

It was a debit card payment over the phone and my mum had to phone her and chase her for a receipt. I am starting to think she is dodgy....

See the thing is, I cant make phone calls from work and this woman said she has barred the company I work for from her emails.....so she cant get my emails......So I kinda left it up to my mum to sort (she hasnt really done a lot, so thought she might enjoy getting involved). So if I email her, she might claim she hasnt got my email and I cant call her till tonight (she hardly ever picks up the phone) I wish Id known she was like this before we paid the deposit....

So should I just wait till to tonight and phone her?

Can you log on to your private e-mail?
Do you work for a telemarketing company or why has she barred e-mails from this company?

First of all text your mum to get her to check her bank account and make sure correct amount was debited (I am quite untrusting when it comes to monetary maters thanks to a few unpleasant individuals)

I think you also need to get your mum to chase her up - this woman could play hard ball and say her contract is with your mum as it was your mum she took payment from etc.

Id be wary even more so if I knew she had "barred" emails from a customer too - very very odd

I use my yahoo account already, so I think she is lying about that. The company I work for is a big chain of garages but I dont use a company email address. So wouldve had to bann my IP address wouldnt she? This is why I am a bit suspicious...

Mums called the bank to stop the payment going through untill we've settled on a price. I think because we vaguely discussed those lace effect cup cake cases - she mightve just added them to the invoice....we havent discussed the details at all. Just very basic details, so I dont know how she can have a total price at all. I just wanted to pay the deposit to secure her and then decide on the details at a later date....

£1.80 does sound a very reasonable price per cupcake for the Glasgow area but most of the people I have contacted, and I know when i sell cakes, will only quote you a price once they have ascertained what it is you want ie flavours, decoration etc as the actual price can vary so much. Prices Ive been getting for up there are between £2 and £5 with the low end for your plain white cases, flavoured sponge and then just buttercream topping.

    She does sound dodgy.

There are so many cake makers out there! I have 3 different friends or aquaintances who have their own little cake businesses - it is quite the trendy thing these days. Why don't you give a shout out on Facebook if anyone does such a thing or knows of someone with a small privately run online business. This will be cheaper aswell.

See the original quote was following a photograph that I sent her and I still would like my cake to look like that. Its just basic cupcakes with black and white buttercream icing, nothing fancy. To be honest, I am so tempted to do it myself. I am a confident baker and I cant be bothered with getting more quotes. I wasnt even bothered about the lace cupcake things it was her who mentioned them. I always said "We shall need to have a meeting with yourself, me and my fiance as he will want some input". I never agreed to any of these fancy things, I just listened to her. Ug. This is a pure pain in the bum :-/

i emailed about 3 or 4 cake makers about my wedding cake and then went back to the first one as her cakes are amazing she gave me a rough guide price so i then had an appointment with her were i took some pictures along and she a rough design from the ideas i emailed her we then went through size style and flavour before she gave me a total price that i was happy with and i then gave her my deposits and booked my day. will be having another appointment with her later on to finalise the details and ok her finished design. why don't you make an appointment with her and see what shes like its very hard to always get your point across in an email and she might not have realised she as given you 2 different prices if she is dealing with 2 different women. if it was me i would ring her this evening and ask to meet her in person they decide what you want to do from there.

I wouldn't use her but you could email her saying
    - these prices are higher than we agreed - please amend to the original price ( could be a mistake)

If she won't then I wouldnt use her - once you go over your design she ight increase it even more!

    - if the deposit does go through you can tell her that as you have written proof on email and she entered into a verbal contract (enforcable in scotland) she has breeched the contract by increasing the prices and therefore you want your deposit back - if she refuses you can threaten to take her 2 small claims court (might not be worth it unless a large deposit)

PS you can get cupcakes from M & S also I found out the bakers beginning with G that does yummy sausage rolls can take large orders

    xx

You could get 48 cup cakes for £48.00 and a sponge (depending on what size you want) ranging from £8.00-£56.00 from a well known high street store *&*. You could get a cake stand and a topper from the bay, a much cheaper and more reliable option to this dodgy woman.
