I hope the mods don't mind me putting this in the 'hen nights' category - but I just wanted to give out a warning to anyone going on their hen night, as well as anyone else just having a night out.
I went out into Leeds city centre last Saturday night with my husband. We actually went out late and so didn't really drink that much. In one of the late bars/clubs we stood in a quietish area so we could have a dance and were still near the dancefloor.
We put our coats and my bag next to us on the ledge and stood about a foot away (touching distance from them). However, someone must've been watching us - because after about an hour my husband went to the toilet. I had my phone out and was having a conversation on FB. I typed my post, then put my phone back in my bag (bag was a zip opener so once shut wouldn't just come open). I'd had my phone out taking pics and texting before this.
I then took a swig of my drink, looked towards the stairs to see if my hubby was on his way back, all without moving from my coat/bag (they were at the side of me). I put down my drink and went to use my phone again - only to find my bag was open and the phone had gone!!!
While I was drinking (30 seconds max) someone had sneaked up behind me, undone my bag and grabbed the phone!! I reported it to the security, police and my mobile provider - and I also asked a few people around the club if they had seen anything. Within the space of 15 minutes TWO other people came up to my husband and said they'd had their phones stolen as well.!!!!!
My phone was only 5 months old - and now I'm having to hope my home insurance will cover it!!!
Sorry for the long post - but I really wanted to give a warning to anyone having a night out/hen night etc and think that even being a foot from their bag or phone is safe - PLEASE PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!! I usually wear jeans for nights out so my phone is usually in my pocket - but this time I was in a skirt so no pocket. Maybe if you need to take a phone, take a cheap PAYG one or even keep it in a pocket, because these people are everywhere and by the looks of last weekend, do this kind of thing regularly.
EDIT MODS THOUGHT IT WAS BETTER IN THE HELPFUL TIPS CATEGORY THANKS MODS

Oh jeez, I'm glad you told your provider though so they can block the phone from being used. How awful. Seems like people were on a spree that night.

People like that make me sick. I had a similar situation in Bradford city center in my first year of uni, I was wearing a cross body bag that sat on my hip and I turned round to get a lighter out my bag and there was a guy with his hands in my bag...WHILST IT WAS STILL ATTACHED TO ME! x

This is horrible, I had something similar happen to me a while ago. My bag was on the table and it was busy and was in arms reach but someone managed to get my phone and purse out. Insurance would not cover it as I was not holding the bag, wasn't house insurance tho so they might. Now I always go out with a bag that I can strap to me or never put my bag down. Hope you manage to get it sorted x x

The worst thing is, we tend to keep to the other end of Leeds city centre when we go out - but last weekend we fancied somewhere retro (70's/80's etc). I went there for my birthday last January and even stood in the same area without any problems, but we're definitely not going back.
As for all the things on my phone - luckily I'd backed up photos, music etc - but the one thing that has upset me is a text from my uncle from May (a month after I got my phone). He died suddenly in June so that's the last thing I had of him (as he lived at the other end of the country) and something that I will never get back. These b**ta*ds don't think of these things when they're robbing people (sorry for the language).

Sorry to here this babe. My hubby had his phone pickpocketed when we were in San Francisco at the weekend. Not sure if insurance will cover it. It's horrible, being the victim of any crime. X
