I just wondered what everyones thoughts are about the new TV show being advertised where people are matched sort of like how a dating site does it and then agree to get married but the first time they meet is at the alter.
Is this not cheapening marriage for the sake of a TV show?

I saw it advertised and for me it is all wrong its just a way of getting viewers stuid idea

It has to just be some sort of gimmick though, surely, because they'd need to give notice however many weeks before and do all the legal rubbish that comes with getting married? x
CommentAuthorEmmaH444
That's what I though too Myranny. I didn't watch it either, it does seem like a gimmick.

I've not seen anything advertised for it, but then I've not been watching a huge amount of TV.
I watched the first episode and it was quite interesting actually. They have a panel of five people matching the couples. This included an anthropologist who looked at whether the pairs lifestyles were compatible, two psychologists who analysed their emotional compatibility and relationship histories, a geneticist who did tests to see if they'd be biologically suited, and a vicar.
Out of 1,500 applicants they only found 2 couples the panel thought would have a strong enough bond to try marriage. The programme makers didn't play down the significance of marriage and what that commitment means to people, which stopped the whole thing seeming too tacky.
I'm not really sure I believe that science can predict whether a marriage will be a good one - and I certainly wouldn't do an experiment like this myself - but it was good TV!

I watched the first episode (M@rried at First Sight its called) and I won't explain the science behind it because Rebecca has it covered ;)
But I thought it was also very interesting and pretty good to watch. There is a lot of work that goes into ensuring the couples are compatible and if they couples choose to stop at any time they can drop out of the arrangement. One woman dropped out because her family wasn't happy with the idea which is fair enough.
The couples themselves have tried the dating the scene without success or have just waited till later in life and don't feel confident in the dating process and the time it takes to develope the relationship necessary to achieve marriage.
They do get to find out little tidbits of into about them especially when they submit their intent to marry at the registrars but they are forbidden from any visual contact or communication. The most they ever get to know is the name and DOB of the person. After the wedding they then obviously go forward as man and wife so if they wish to "do the deed" they can and then they go off on honeymoon and move in together... after a while if they find they're not happy they divorce but I have a feeling the TV show pays for that side of things.
Kinda puts me in mind of the origins of Handfasting being that you were in effect a married couple for a year and a day and could go your seperate ways after if you wanted to. Will be interesting to see where this goes considering this use to be very common even in British history within the aristocracy.

I have now watched it and you're right it was interesting. I was surprised to see that one of the panel was a vicar. I'm curious to see how it all works out.

I enjoyed it too, they brought some science into which made it particularly interesting for me. However it is essentially a backwards dating programme!

I was intrigues when I first saw the advert and the first episode was very informative and made it actually sounds interesting. I think if I felt I was getting older and tried everything n it wasn't working I'd go for it. But luckily I have my soul mate :) x

I saw it advertised and they talked about it on 88c breakfast. Not sure I agree with it tbh, just me though, think the concept cheapens marriage to make profit for tv. I do understand it's an experiment.

So what's people thoughts on the final ep?
My sumerisation. A few days ago I had a chat with a friend about this and one of the things I raised was I wouldn't be surprised if Kate and Jason's relationship was a bright shining star that burned out very quickly whilst Emma and James will maybe be the slow burn which would kindle something special.
Can't believe I was right! Though very frustrated with how Jason turned out to be worthy of a slap with how he treated Kate (saying that there is a lot we don't see off camera and there is always more to it)
One of the things that annoyed me is I picked up very quickly Jason never let his guard down and wore his anxiety. When chatting to my OH about this I said "what's the first thing either of us do when we get home? (Aside from going mental with the dog) and his response was "we change clothing into something else" now it doesn't matter that my work doesn't have a dress code. When I come home I change clothes because I want to step out of "work mode" and this makes me more comfortable, open and relaxed. I saw this with Emma and James but definitely not Kate and Jason. They kept their shoes on and work clothes on.
Really happy for Emma and James and hope they have a wonderful life together. (I actually cheered and whooped at the end)

I must admit, I was very annoyed with Jason because when he should be making it work with Kate or at least trying, what does she find, that he'd been on T1nder. I really thought these two would work and Emma and James would be the ones that would fizzle out but I was wrong and think they are both very sweet together now :) The way they are now living apart and making it fun, slowly building up their relationship is wonderful and so far, it seems to be working for them so go Emma and James!

I've got to admit i really enjoyed the programme i did like a lot of others thought it would be a tacky programme that ruins the meaning of marriage but it was just lonely people trying to find their soul mate i really hope emma and james make it work they look so suited to each other would love channel 4 to do a follow up programme later on to see how they're getting on (suppose thats just me being nosey though) and yes i agree jason was a complete tw@t xx

I haven't watched it, but the concept really worried me. I do definitely feel that marriage cannot be entered into lightly, and divorce should not be considered as the safety net in case you get it wrong, it should be the last resort when the unexpected happens and it falls apart. You should only go into marriage if you're 100% sure, not as part of an experiment. As a Christian in particular I find it really difficult to get my head around what seems to be saying it's not really a sacred lifelong union, if it goes wrong you can bail. I'm not saying that the concept of matching people scientifically is wrong. I would rather that they had paired people up to start a relationship, and followed the developing relationship to see what happened. Maybe send them off on holiday together to allow them to spend a decent amount of time together. Then revisit after a year to see if they stay together and decide to get married.
30th August 2014 was the best birthday ever.
It was the day that I became Mrs. Dixon.
